ICC students receive Foundation scholarships

Registration underway for ICC Pathway programs to begin in September

            Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for several pathway programs that are scheduled to begin in September at the Belden Center.             They include Certified Nursing Assistant, Commercial Truck Driving, Human Resources Assistant, Medical Administrative Assistant, Basic Construction, Introduction to Industrial Maintenance and Electrician Assistant.             Certified Nursing Assistant will meet from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, Sept. 21-Oct. 6.  The program prepares participants to take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Upon successful program and examination completion, employment could be available in nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers and clinics.             Commercial Truck Driving begins Sept. 9 and will meet from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Oct. 2. The program prepares individuals to drive Class A semi trucks and other commercial vehicles. It includes instruction in operating diesel-powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records and keeping necessary records.             The Human Resources Assistant class will meet Thursdays from 6-9 p.m., Sept. 24-Oct. 29. ICC to offer four innovative scheduling options for fall

           With classes set to begin Aug. 17, Itawamba Community College is one of the only two-year institutions in the state to offer four innovative course schedule offerings for the fall semester.             “In an effort to allow for physical distancing in the classrooms and assist with enhanced cleaning procedures, classes will be taught using one of the four instructional methods,” said Dr. Michelle Sumerel, vice president of instructional services.             The offerings include face-to-face only, face-to-face hybrid, face-to-face Zoom and online only. These instructional methods ensure that all students who registered for a face-to-face class will have 50 percent or more of that class taught in that delivery system each week. Face-to-face only courses are delivered in a traditional format on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays at all three of the College’s locations, Fulton, Tupelo and Belden. Sumerel said that all classrooms have been reconfigured with desks positioned six feet apart, and typically larger classes have been relocated to spaces that will accommodate more students to enable physical distancing. Three pathway programs to begin soon at ICC-Belden

            Registration is underway for three pathway programs, which will begin soon at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center.             They include Certified Nursing Assistant, Food Service Pathway and Manufacturing Skills Basic Certification.             Certified Nursing Assistant will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 1-17, from 5-9 p.m. The program prepares participants to take the exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Upon successful completion of the program and the examination, nursing assistants can find employment with nursing homes, medical centers, home healthcare providers and clinics. Becoming a CNA provides an excellent foundation for those who want to advance in the nursing profession.             Food Service Pathway will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. from Aug. 31-Sept. 25. The class includes proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices and culinary techniques. Students will receive hands-on instruction, internships with local restaurants and an opportunity to build their résumé, enhance their interview skills and attain ServeSafe® certification and ServeSafe® Alcohol certification. Gateway program registration continues

            Registration is continuing for the Gateway program at Itawamba Community College.             The program is designed for individuals who are between the ages of 16-24, do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent, want career coaching and are serious about exploring employment opportunities. In addition, those who have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma may qualify if they have another type of barrier, including but not limited to, single parent, low income, disabilities and homeless. Enrollments are currently being accepted for participants Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. Open enrollment for classes in the one-week program begins Mondays at 9 a.m. at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.). According to WIOA Youth Coordinator Sanders Bell, students can start on Monday and possibly have a job by Friday.             The program is funded by the Mississippi Partnership Workforce Development Board and the Three Rivers Planning and Development District, Inc.             For more information or to register, call (662) 407-1207.

Markham, Rinehart selected as prestigious Leaders of Promise Scholars

            Itawamba Community College sophomores Abby Rinehart of Saltillo and Kaylee Markham of Golden are among 207 Phi Theta Kappa members selected as 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars and will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.             The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential. Nearly 700 applications were received.             A business major, Rinehart is a member of the ICC Honors College, where she volunteers for various community events; Supplemental Instruction Leader; president of the Upsilon Sigma Chapter of PTK for 2020-21. Her activities include member of the First Baptist Church of Tupelo. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Chris Rinehart.             At ICC, Markham is a biology major. Area ICC graduates take advantage of C2C program

           Several area residents are among recent graduates at Itawamba Community College, who earned degrees with assistance from a statewide program that is designed to help Mississippi adults who have earned previous college credit.             C2C is a statewide program designed to help Mississippi adults who have earned college credit, but not a degree, to better their lives by completing a college education, according to Dr. Emily Tucker, ICC recruitment coordinator, adviser and C2C liaison.             The graduates include Jimi Dylan Tackett, Tiffany McDonald, both of Amory; John Foster of Blue Springs; Carol Blaylock of Dennis; Pamela Spruill of Derma; Alexandria Blanchard, Payton Green, both of Fulton; Chiqita Cook of Houston; Johnathan Gregory of New Albany; Roy Freeman of Okolona; Willie Orr of Prairie; Lauren Palladino of Saltillo; Kathryn Bushway of Shannon; Darby Dabbs of Smithville; Rasheeda Iyanda, Amy Clayton, Zachary McMickin, all of Tupelo; and Tara Griffin of Woodland.             Program participants at ICC are connected to a C2C coach, who works to maximize the application of earned credits toward a degree, Tucker said. ICC releases latest reopening plan for Aug. 17

            As Aug. 17 approaches, Itawamba Community College has released information that will provide a glimpse of what to expect for the fall semester at all three of its locations, Fulton, Tupelo and Belden.             The plan was developed based on guidance from healthcare professionals, feedback from employees and students as well as ICC leadership and recommendations from the College’s reopening task force, according to President Dr. Jay Allen.  “The information provides an overview as we plan to welcome students back to our locations when classes begin on Aug. 17. Every decision that continues to be made prioritizes the safety of our students, employees and communities we serve.”             The plan covers such areas as academics, residence halls, campus dining and student experience.             In addition, a self-reporting app will be implemented for all students and employees to allow for symptom checking and contact tracing. All students will complete an ICC-specific Canvas module, Safely Together, on ways to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and how members of the college community can continue to stay safely together, Allen said.             ...

Registration continues for 2020 fall semester classes

            Registration at Itawamba Community College is continuing for the 2020 fall semester.             Students can register weekdays any time between Aug. 3-14 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the David C. Cole Student Services Building at the Fulton Campus and the Academic and Student Center at the Tupelo Campus. Extended registration hours are scheduled at the Tupelo Campus from 4:30-7 p.m., Aug. 12; and 4:30-6 p.m., Aug. 13.             Traditional day classes begin Aug. 17; and eLearning full-term and eight-week classes, Aug. 24.             Financial aid is available, as well as adult learner scholarships.             Academic, career education, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden.
