ICC pathway programs set to begin in January Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for several pathway programs that are scheduled to begin in January. They include January 11 – Certified Nursing Assistant (Mondays/Wednesdays, 5-9 p.m.), Food Service Pathway (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.), Medical Administrative Assistant (Mondays/Wednesdays, 5-9 p.m.); and January 12 – Business Office Specialist (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 5:30-9:30 p.m.), EMT Basic (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 5-10 p.m.), Introduction to Welding and Cutting (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 6-9 p.m.) and Pharmacy Technician (Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m.). ICC's Salinas to participate in NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars course Itawamba Community College sophomore Diana Salinas of Golden has been selected to participate in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Community College Aerospace Scholars five-week online course. Top-performing students in the online course receive an invitation to the fall NASA experience in March 2021. The program provides those selected with a four-day in-person learning experience at a NASA center. A computer science major, Salinas is the reporter for the Phi Theta Kappa MS/LA Region and the vice president of leadership for the Upsilon Sigma chapter. She is also president of ICC’s Computer Science Club and the vice president of the Fulton Campus Student Government Association. She plans to transfer to the University of Mississippi to earn the Bachelor of Science degree. Her parents are Gabriela Cortes and Santos Vazquez. Students nationwide are chosen to participate through a competitive process from among applicants who are U.S. citizens currently pursuing their initial undergraduate degree at a community college. ICC's Ward selected Humanities Teacher Award nominee Nathan Ward of Mooreville has been selected as Itawamba Community College’s Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award nominee for 2021. He will present “Crossing the Bar: Attaining Student Success,” at 6 p.m., Jan. 26, in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. Limited seating will be available, but livestream will be provided. He will be honored at the Mississippi Humanities Council Public Awards ceremony, Mar. 26, in Jackson. “This is an unexpected, but completely appreciated honor,” Ward said. “ICC demands success on every level, and it is hard for me to imagine working anywhere else.” A 1998 graduate of ICC, Ward earned both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Mississippi. Since 2007, he has served as an English instructor at ICC, where he also has been a supplemental instruction technician since 2018. ICC offers new course in Enhanced Forklift Operator Training Itawamba Community College will offer a new course, Enhanced Forklift Operator Training, Dec. 15 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Belden Center. Topics include the requirements of the OSHA Powered Industrial Truck Regulation 29 CFR 1910.178, safe powered industrial truck operation and how forklifts work, identification of operating hazards as well as the general principles of safe operation and how to properly inspect and maintain a forklift. No previous experience in forklift operation is required. According to ICC Pathway Coordinator Josh Gammill, “This eight-hour class will provide students the opportunity to receive hands-on training on three different classifications of forklifts: Standup Rider (Class 1), Order Selector (Class 2) and LP Gas Powered Sit-Down Forklift (Class 4).” Cost of the course is $85. ICC's Guntharp represents all 15 community colleges during significant C Spire MissiON announcement Itawamba Community College Systems Engineer Jason Guntharp of Fulton represented all 15 Mississippi public two-year institutions during a press briefing Thursday to announce their addition to a statewide science, engineering and technology research and development consortium called the Mississippi Optical Network (MissiON). Guntharp served as chair of the subcommittee, which assisted with the addition of Mississippi’s community colleges to the C Spire initiative. Additional speakers for the virtual press conference included Hu Meena, president and CEO of C Spire; Dr. Andrea Mayfield, executive director of the Mississippi Community College Board; David Sliman, CIO of the University of Southern Mississippi; and Jim Richmond, vice president of marketing for C Spire.
