MSBC class to begin Jan. 16 Registration is underway for a day class option for the Manufacturing Skills Basic Certification program beginning Jan. 16 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center. The class will meet Mondays through Thursdays through Feb. 28 from 8 a.m.-noon. The program is designed to prepare students desiring to have a career in high-performance manufacturing to be successful. Through this program, students use critical thinking skills, update core skills and knowledge and will earn nationally-recognized credentials. Developed to respond to core knowledge for the current and emerging industry sectors located within the north Mississippi region, the 94-hour MBSC includes three national credentials – 10-hour OSHA, the American Heart Association’s CPR and the Career Readiness Certificate. Comprehensive interactive classes, computer-based tools, experienced instructors and excellent reference materials create a valuable training experience. MacGown work on display The work of Joe MacGown of Starkville, researcher/scientific illustrator for the Mississippi Entomological Museum since 1988, will be on display in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts gallery at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus through Dec. 6. A reception for the artist is scheduled for 2 p.m., Dec. 6, in the gallery. In 1964, MacGown was born in Maine, where he lived until his family moved to Mississippi when he was 10. MacGown spent many of his young days in Maine collecting insects, exploring the woods and drawing everything he could see, including many images that no one ever sees. When he moved to Mississippi, his interest in art and nature continued. After graduating from high school, MacGown attended the Memphis College of Art. He also worked the night shift at a local grocery and did some freelance artwork on the side for the next few years. For the last 20 years, MacGown has continued to develop his own surrealistic drawing style, which he calls “Neogothic Surrealism” or “Subconscious Meandering.” He predominantly works in black ink, but he also does mixed media ... ICC publishes report card Itawamba Community College recently published its 2016 Report Card, which is made available by the College in compliance with House Bill No. 1071 approved during the 2010 Mississippi Legislative session. The bill created an Education Achievement Council which was established to set educational achievement goals for institutions of higher learning and community and junior colleges in the state and to assist in monitoring progress toward those goals. The Community College Report Card, designed to reflect the unique mission of community colleges, includes metrics on enrollment; degrees awarded; student success, retention and progress; workforce training; high school equivalency and adult basic education services; and success in developmental or remedial coursework. The results in the 2016 Report Card demonstrate achievement for Itawamba Community College. ICC ranked higher than the state total percentages, based on figures for 2015-16, in student success measures of graduation, retention and student progress earning credits rates. The College had similar percentages as the statewide system in the areas of successful completion of credits, licensure exam pass rates and graduation placement rates. Morris selected as 2018 William Winter Scholar James Keith Morris of Tupelo, English instructor, has been selected as Itawamba Community College’s William Winter Scholar for 2018. He will be among statewide recipients honored at the 29th Annual Conference, Feb. 22-24, in Natchez. Morris, who previously served as part-time instructor for ICC, joined the full-time faculty in August, 2008. He earned the bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi and the master’s degree from Mississippi State University. His activities include fundraiser for St. Jude, participant in the St. Jude Marathon Weekend, poetry and song writer, co-creator of ICC’s world literature I and drama production I-IV, creator of ICC’s writing for publication, sponsor for the writing portion of the annual Calliope poetry and art journal and co-host of the film class’s annual Zombie Run. ICC opens Early Childhood Academy Itawamba Community College is offering a new service to area parents and daycare providers through the Early Childhood Academy. The service provides professional development training to daycare/preschool teachers as well as parenting classes and a large library of educational materials available for free use by those from Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. The Early Childhood Academy is a collaboration of ICC, the Mississippi Community College Board, the Mississippi Department of Human Services and child care providers to ensure that Mississippi’s family-based unified and integrated early childhood system connects and integrates resources and services for both parents/caregivers and their children. ICC’s Resource and Referral Center is located in the Student Support Center at the Tupelo Campus at 2176 South Eason Blvd. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Professional development is scheduled on selected Tuesdays and Thursdays (from 6-8 p.m.) and Saturdays (9 a.m.-noon). Barnes, Sheffield named Get2College Corps Internship Scholars Itawamba Community College sophomores Mae Barnes of Tupelo and Kirksey Sheffield of Mantachie have been selected as Get2College Corps Internship Scholars. Phi Theta Kappa partners with the Woodward Hines Education Foundation and Get2College to administer this opportunity for PTK members. As Get2College Corps Interns, Barnes and Sheffield will each receive a $5,000 scholarship distributed in two payments during the 2017-18 academic year. Interns will volunteer for a minimum of 10 hours per week with the Get2College staff to increase FAFSA completions. Barnes currently serves as secretary for the Beta Tau Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at the ICC Tupelo Campus. Her activities include theatre productions and serving as a counselor at Twin Lakes Camp. Barnes plans to transfer to Mississippi State University, where she will pursue an elementary education degree with a minor in theatre.
