Dempsey selected as Mississippi delegate

Dr. Kristi Dempsey of Spruce Pine, Ala., associate dean/director for the Associate Degree and Practical Nursing programs at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as one of two Mississippi delegates to attend the American Nurses Association 2017 membership assembly in Washington, D.C. The ANA Membership Assembly is the governing and official voting body of the American Nurses Association. It identifies and discusses issues of concern to members and provides direction to the ANA board of directors. Dempsey earned the associate’s degree from Northwest Shoals Community College, the bachelor’s degree from the University of North Alabama and both the master’s and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees from the University of Alabama. Her career includes five years at ICC and a nurse for 19 years. Her memberships have included the Alabama Board of Nurses, Mississippi Board of Nursing, Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nurses Association, National Organization for Associate Degree Nurses, University of Alabama Alumni Association, National League for Nursing, Mississippi Council of Deans and Directors and Mississippi Council Associate Degree Nursing Programs and a past member of Sigma Theta Tau.            

Support Staff of the Year

Three Itawamba Community College employees have been selected as recipients of the 2016-17 Recognition of Excellence, Support Staff Employee Award. They include Colby Hannon of Pontotoc, PC/telecommunications and network technician; Jennifer McFerrin of Mantachie, library technical specialist; and Candice Pitts of Mantachie, Advising Center office specialist. Hannon graduated from ICC in 1998, which is the same year he began his employment in the Learning Resource Center. After two years, he transferred to Telecommunications and Information Service. He is married to Debbie Hannon, and he attends The Orchard Methodist Church in Tupelo. McFerrin earned the associate’s degree from ICC, the bachelor’s degree from Mississippi University for Women and in 2014, Library Support Staff Certification. Her work experience includes the North Mississippi Medical Center, Community Development Foundation, Mantachie First Baptist Church and Mantachie Printing. McFerrin joined the ICC staff in 1991, serving as library technical specialist at the Tupelo Campus. Since January 1997, she has been at the Fulton Campus, where she has also proctored online testing prior to her current duties. Second summer term registration

Individuals who wish to attend second summer session classes at Itawamba Community College can register online now or take advantage of open registration at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. In addition, a four-week eLearning term is an option. Open registration for the second summer term is from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., June 30, in the Registrar/Admissions office at the Fulton Campus or the Student Support Center at the Tupelo Campus. Classes begin July 3, and the last day to add classes is July 6. The eLearning four-week term classes begin June 26, which is also the last day to add classes. Honors for ICC's Layne Carnathan

Layne Carnathan of Shannon placed second in the Career Quest Portfolio competition at the annual Practical Nursing convention recently in Biloxi. In addition, she is the first recipient of the $1,000 Jay Slaughter Scholarship through the National Association of Licensed Practical Nurses, for which the qualifications are a member of the LPN Association with a 3.0 grade point average. She was selected on the basis of submission of her application with outstanding recommendations and community service. Carnathan works part-time at Elite Medical. The daughter of David and Tensie Carnathan, she is married to Jerry Chadwick. Also, for the sixth time in seven years, ICC’s Practical Nursing program won the community service project.

Ashlynn Beam receives award

Recent Itawamba Community College graduate Ashlynn Beam of Nettleton has received the Mississippi Radiological Society’s student award. At ICC, Beam was named to the President’s List and was the recipient of the 2017 Radiologic Technology award. She attends the Shannon Church of Jesus Christ where she is a praise team member, youth choir director and Bible quizzing coach. She is the daughter of Paul and Tammy Beam. Criteria for selection for the award include high academic achievement, sound moral character and financial need.

July freshman orientation

Online registration continues for the July freshman orientation sessions at Itawamba Community College. Both morning (8-11:45 a.m.) and afternoon (1-4:45 p.m.) sessions are scheduled for July 10 at the David C. Cole Student Services Building at the Fulton Campus and July 13 at the Health Science Education Center at the Tupelo Campus.  Morning only sessions will be July 11 at the Fulton Campus and July 14 at the Tupelo Campus. Students may check in from 8-8:45 a.m. for the morning session and from 1-1:45 p.m. for the afternoon session. The schedule includes small group sessions, campus tours, computer training and registration. ID and yearbook photos will be made.  A special parent orientation session will cover topics of special interest to parents.  ICC orientation is mandatory for all graduating high school seniors. Students must have submitted an application for admission before registering for orientation. In addition, they should register for the session at the campus where they plan to attend and should sign up as soon as possible since only a maximum number can attend each session.
