ICC eight-week traditional, eLearning class registration continues

Registration for eight-week traditional and eLearning classes is continuing at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses of Itawamba Community College.             The deadline to register is Oct. 12 for the traditional term and Oct. 17 for the eLearning (online) session. Traditional classes begin Oct. 11, and online, Oct. 16.             ICC offers academic, career education, workforce and eLearning classes. Apply NOW for free welding class made possible by Metallica's foundation, All Within My Hands

            A free class in welding, which begins at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center, Oct. 11, is possible due to a grant this summer from Metallica’s foundation, All Within My Hands.             The class will meet for one eight-week term, and the curriculum includes introduction to welding I and introduction to STEM.             During the second phase, which begins Jan. 8, the students will take shielded metal arc welding and two fully-online classes in entrepreneurship and principles of marketing.             Among the schools, which applied for the grant, ICC was selected from a competitive pool of applicants to receive $100,000 to transform the futures of students in the community.             For more information on enrolling in the Oct. 11 welding class, contact Dylan Baldwin, dean of career education, at 662.407.1414 or email dcbaldwin@iccms.edu.

ICC to sponsor innovative dinner and demo series in October

Itawamba Community College will sponsor a dinner and demo series at three Tupelo restaurants beginning Oct. 12 at 4:30 p.m. at Forklift with chef Cooper Miller.             Additional sessions are scheduled for 5:30 p.m., October 17, at Neon Pig with chef Brooke Ramsey and at 6 p.m., Oct. 24, at Park Heights with chef Tom Lester.             “The chefs at each location will provide a demonstration related to the dinner preparation, which will follow,” according to Josh Gammill, ICC director of Continuing Education, which is cosponsoring the series with the Food Management Certification pathway.             “The three local restaurants and their executive chefs have created a unique interactive experience for participants,” Gammill said.             Limited seating is available. ICC leads state in full-time enrollment increase

            Itawamba Community College ranks first in the state in full-time enrollment increase and in the top three in overall enrollment increase, according to figures recently released by the Mississippi Community College Board.             With fall enrollment at 5,034 at the end of the 10-day reporting period, figures from fall 22 to fall 23 show an 8.5 percent increase.             The increase can be attributed to multiple factors, according to ICC President Dr. Jay Allen, including the addition of Magnolia Hall, a state-of-the-art residence for honors students and student leaders accommodating 246 additional students which opened last fall and an enhanced emphasis on activities.             “This is very exciting news,” Allen said. “The increase in the number of students that ICC is serving is significant because we have additional opportunities to provide a solid educational foundation and the best start for those in our five-county district and beyond.”             “Statistics show that the more students are engaged, the more successful they will be in the classroom,” according to ICC Vice President of Student Services Dr. Brad Boggs. “Having an attractive, comprehensive student activities ...

Chandler, Lyons receive MAMA scholarships

          With the announcement of Mississippi Automotive Manufacturers Association's 2023-24 Scholarship Recipients, MAMA's scholarship fund that has supported 205 students enrolled in Mississippi community colleges and universities reached a total of $407,500 awarded since 2006.           Selected from Itawamba Community College include Quen'Darrius "Que" Chandler and Julius Lyons, both of Houston, sophomores in Industrial Maintenance and participants in the Advanced Manufacturing Technician program at Toyota Mississippi.           Chandler wrote in his essay, "I am currently working at the Toyota plant in Blue Springs, where I am experiencing real-world maintenance training. I am hardworking and dedicated to becoming more knowledgeable about the automotive manufacturing industry, and I desire to improve it in any way that I can within my company and the industry as a whole.           His group leader at Toyota Mississippi recognized Que's commitment in his letter of recommendation. ICC's Upton selected as Jim Ingram Community Leadership Institute participant

Michael Upton of Mooreville, director of Advancement for Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a participant in the 2023-25 Jim Ingram Community Leadership Institute.             “The Jim Ingram Community Leadership Institute provides wonderful insights and training to create leaders in North Mississippi,” Upton said. “I am honored to have been chosen to be a part of this year’s class.”             At ICC, he leads both the Foundation and the Alumni Association. He is responsible for overseeing and directing their functions through cultivating, soliciting and stewarding fundraising, events and principal relationships at the direction of the office of the President.             Upton has 17 years of fundraising and development experience. His previous professional work includes serving as major gift officer/regional philanthropy officer for the American Red Cross of Mississippi. Prior to that, he was director of development at Ole Miss for several areas including the University Libraries, Center for the Study of Southern Culture, Gertrude C. ICC schedules Preparing for the ACT sessions

               The Itawamba Community College Continuing Education Department has scheduled several sessions for Preparing for the ACT during the 2023 fall semester. All meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.                 Math and science sessions include Oct. 21 and Dec. 2. English and reading are offered Oct. 14 and Nov. 18.                 ICC’s ACT prep instructors use three intensive classroom review methods in English, reading, science reasoning and math that focus on strategies for improving test-day performance and scores. Those methods include a review of all concepts tested, tips for overcoming test anxiety and guides for “studying smart.” Those who are enrolled have an opportunity to pre-test early and post-test later in the class using full-length ACT practice tests to measure performance and practice for the testing dates. Students must bring their books to all sessions.                 The cost is $50 per session.                 Preregistration is required. ICC celebrates 75th anniversary with Sept. 28 community tailgate

  Itawamba Community College will host a 75th anniversary celebration and community tailgate, Sept. 28, prior to the Indians’ football game with Northwest Mississippi Community College.                 The schedule includes 4 p.m., Indian Spirit Walk (cheer the football team on their way to Lambert Stadium); 5 p.m., community tailgate with food trucks and free Kids’ Zone activities; 6:30 p.m., pregame show with the ICC All-American Marching Band; and 7 p.m., kickoff at Eaton Field.                 According to event organizer Nina Strother, director of Marketing and Community Engagement, a designated area will be set up for tailgating, however, those who wish to participate must be set up before 3:30 p.m. One table and two chairs are available per 10 x 10 tent.                 All events are open to the public.                 For more information, contact Strother at 662.862.8242 or njstrother@iccms.edu.

ICC's Mask, Butler selected as '23 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars

Emma Mask of Plantersville and Matthew Butler of Tupelo, sophomores at Itawamba Community College, have been selected as 2023 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars and will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.             The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential. Nearly 1,100 applications were received.             Mask, a sophomore at ICC, is majoring in secondary math education. Her ICC activities and honors include Phi Theta Kappa president, Honors College, Instructional Support team leader, Fashion Tribe social executive, pom dancer, Indianette dancer, Trading Post committee, Indian Delegation social executive, STEM Club, Educators Rising and Mirror staff. Mask is a member of Liberty Baptist Church, personal trainer at Excel Fitness in Mooreville and employee of Funky Cones. ICC's Sept. 28 Fall Preview Day designed for high school seniors

High school seniors will have an opportunity to learn about Itawamba Community College during its Fall Preview Day, which is scheduled for September 28 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. at the Fulton Campus.                 Fall Preview Day attendees will also have free admission for the ICC/Northwest football game at Eaton Field, beginning with a tailgate at 5:30 p.m.                 They can select from up to two information sessions about ICC’s schools of academics, health science and career education, and participants will hear directly from faculty within the areas. They can choose which schools to attend based on a selected major through the registration link. Attendees will also receive information on involvement at ICC, financial aid/scholarships, housing and residence life, Phi Theta Kappa and honors.
