ICC gallery features work by Victoria Cummings-Bobo New works by artist Victoria Cummings-Bobo of Evergreen are currently on display in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. The exhibition titled “Eshe (Eh-Sheh) = Life: An Abstract Metal Frame of Mind” features a collection of acrylic and mixed media pieces to commemorate Black History Month and will be on display until Mar. 9. Bobo’s work uses household items or something nature provides to tell colorful and vibrant stories. Her work ranges from miniature models, which reflect everyday people to vibrant paintings and statuesque colorful objects. She combines her art and her faith by using adorned mannequins to teach Sunday School classes at New Temple Baptist Church. Bobo’s love of the arts has included poetry, acting and playing the piano. After a time in New York City, she returned to Dorsey in 1987, and in 1988, Bobo and her sister, Dr. Ormella Cummings, formed We Amend Minds-By-Action, an organization devoted to introducing cultural activities and enrichment programs to young people and adults in Itawamba County and the surrounding area. ICC selects Most Beautiful, alternates at Feb. 1 pageant Rylie Ozbirn of New Albany was selected as Itawamba Community College’s Most Beautiful 2023-24 at the conclusion of the annual pageant, which was Feb. 1 at the Fulton Campus. Winners include Sharicka Martin of Shannon, Most Photogenic; Sarah Kate Thompson of Potts Camp, fourth alternate; Alexis “Lexi” Tabbs of Red Bay, Ala., second alternate; Emma Grace Allen of Fulton, first alternate; Mary Morgan Lyle of Tupelo, third alternate; and Kaitlyn Plunkett of Fulton, Crowd Favorite. ICC celebrates STEM week with proclamation signing Itawamba Community College President Dr. Jay Allen signed a proclamation designating Feb. 6-10 as STEM Week. The event signals the start of an amplified focus on the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at ICC, which is offering an innovative way for involvement and exploration of those areas with the creation of a STEM Club as well as a new course, Introduction to STEM Professions. ICC Food Service Pathway class to begin Feb. 15 at Belden Itawamba Community College has scheduled a Food Service Pathway class at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) beginning Feb. 15. Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. through Mar. 22. ICC's Health Sciences Division to host Code Blue and Red event for students from 12 area schools Itawamba Community College’s Health Sciences Division will host a Code Blue and Red event from 8:30 a.m.-noon, Feb. 10, in the Health Science Education Center at the Tupelo Campus. Students from 12 area schools will be on campus in two shifts (8:30 and 10:15 a.m.) to view simulations of three real-life scenarios, said Michael Holloway, director of recruitment and orientation. A North Mississippi Medical Center ambulance will arrive, and the students will see first-hand the need for and the role healthcare professionals play in the process. “It will be an impactful program,” Holloway said, “Our hope is that these students see the ‘real-life’ expertise used by the graduates of ICC’s programs.” Participating programs include students and faculty from Associate Degree Nursing, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Emergency Medical Sciences, Health Information, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, Practical Nursing, Public Health, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Care and Surgical Technology. ICC schedules Preparing for the ACT sessions The Continuing Education Department of Itawamba Community College has scheduled several sessions for Preparing for the ACT. All meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Math and science sessions include Feb. 4, Apr. 1 and May 20. English and reading are offered Apr. 8 and June 3. ICC’s ACT prep instructors use three intensive classroom review methods in English, reading, science reasoning and math that focus on strategies for improving test-day performance and scores. Those methods include a review of all concepts tested, tips for overcoming test anxiety and guides for “studying smart.” Those who are enrolled have an opportunity to pre-test early and post-test later in the class using full-length ACT practice tests to measure performance and practice for the testing dates. ICC to host Mississippi Science Olympiad North Regional event, Feb. 10, at Fulton Itawamba Community College will host the Mississippi Science Olympiad North Regional event, Feb. 10, at the Fulton Campus. According to North Regional Director Dr. Jada Mills, who is ICC’s Natural Science Division Chair, six teams will participate in the event, which is a rigorous academic interscholastic competition that consists of a series of individual and team events, for which students prepare during the year. “The challenging and motivational events are well-balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology,” Mills said. “There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications.” Participating schools include Clarksdale Collegiate Public Charter School, Neshoba Central High School, Neshoba Central, Oxford High School, Mooreville High School and Tupelo High School. Four ICC sophomores named to All-Mississippi Academic Team Four Itawamba Community College sophomores have been named to the All-Mississippi Academic Team. They include Raven Blagg of Saltillo, Emily Moorman of Pontotoc, Emory Reinhard of Mantachie and Alexis Tabbs of Red Bay, Ala. Blagg is dual enrolled at both Tupelo High School and Itawamba Community College. Her activities at THS include archery team and former member of the band, and at ICC, vice president of fellowship for the Beta Tau Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and archery club team. Her honors include both dean’s and president’s lists. Blagg, who is also a member of 4-H, was one of four individuals on the state team for muzzleloading that competed nationally in June. She works in childcare at Montessori School of Tupelo and in the preschool department at First Baptist Church. Her parents are Steven and Aphilak Blagg. Registration open for upcoming ICC Pathways classes Registration is underway for several pathways classes that will begin soon at Itawamba Community College. They include Residential Wiring, Small Engine Repair Technician and Introduction to Welding and Cutting. Residential Wiring meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 7-Mar. 9. In the hands-on class, participants will learn how to use a meter properly; change and update receptacles; distinguish between different types of switches; switch replacement; locate loose or bad connections; and troubleshooting techniques. It is designed for those who are interested in becoming an electrician’s assistant or want to learn to do very basic electrical wiring for their own use. Small Engine Repair Technician meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 7-Apr. 6. Upon successful completion of the 16-session program, students will be prepared for an entry-level technician position at an existing small engine repair shop or to open their own related business.
