ICC to host Summer of Science presentation, Oct. 27 Itawamba Community College will host a Summer of Science presentation, Oct. 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the David C. Cole Student Services Building at the Fulton Campus. The presentation is the culmination of a research project between ICC and Brown University. Funding for this project was made possible by Brown University and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Erica Walker, assistant professor of epidemiology at the Brown University School of Public Health, will be a special guest. She has extensive experience with both environmental exposure assessments and modeling, community surveying and community engagement, focusing on air, noise, visual and water pollution. She practices storm chasing science, which she defines as directing her resources and attention to areas that are typically overlooked. Her credentials include the bachelor’s degree from Simmons University, master’s degree from Tufts University and doctorate from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. ICC schedules Fall Preview Day, Oct. 27 High school seniors will have an opportunity to learn about Itawamba Community College during its Fall Preview Day, which is scheduled for October 27 from 2-5:30 p.m. at the Fulton Campus. Fall Preview Day attendees will also have free admission for the ICC/Coahoma football game at Eaton Field, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The opportunity will include sessions about ICC’s schools of academics, health science and career education, and participants will hear directly from faculty within the areas, according to Michael Holloway, director of recruitment and orientation. They can choose which school to attend based on a selected major through the registration link. Attendees will also receive information on involvement at ICC, financial aid, Phi Theta Kappa, honors, housing and supplemental instruction. Brown, Smith to present fourth in 'Reflecting Mississippi' series at ICC-Fulton, Oct. 18 Dr. Alan Brown, professor of English at the University of West Alabama, and Sihya Smith, assistant curator at the Oren Dunn City Museum in Tupelo, will present “Haunted History: How Ghost Stories Reflect Mississippi’s Identity,” Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in the W. O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. Since he began at UWA, Brown has developed an abiding interest in Southern folklore, which culminated in 29 books. For the past three decades, his focus has been on Southern ghost lore and on African American culture and music. Also, his interest in Southern folklore has manifested itself in several collections of Southern ghost stories. He has investigated numerous haunted sites, including the Artist’s House in Key West, Fla., Miss Molly’s Bed and Breakfast in Fort Worth, Tex., King’s Tavern in Natchez, the Waverly Hills Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Louisville, Ky. and the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Ark. ICC to honor military, first responders and healthcare professionals during All-American Heroes night, Oct. 13 Both past and current members of the armed forces, first responders and healthcare professionals will be honored during Itawamba Community College’s All-American Heroes Night, Oct. 13, at Lambert Stadium/Eaton Field at the Fulton Campus during ICC’s football game with Hinds Community College, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Special activities will include a salute during halftime featuring ICC’s All-American Band. Honorary captains, who will participate in the coin toss and be recognized during pregame beginning at 6 p.m., will be U.S. Rep. ICC Travel Tribe schedules Italy study abroad tour in May Itawamba Community College’s Travel Tribe will embark on a mini-study abroad tour of Italy next May, and a limited number of spots are available. The eight-day tour (May 18-25) includes Rome and Florence. Highlights are Vatican City, Roman Forum and Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Spanish Steps in Rome and Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, Basilica of Santa Croce, Gates of Paradise and Accademia in Florence. In late summer, cosponsor Jessi Stevenson joined college travel representatives from across the United States in Paris, France for a five-day training session. The Orientation and Development Seminar with EF Tours will enable Stevenson and cosponsor Dr. Edana Nail and Dean Chris Stevenson to better lead educational and travel initiatives, such as the upcoming tour of Italy. Stevenson said that EF led training seminars each morning and daily walking tours of the city each afternoon. ICC gallery features paintings by Amy Webb A collection of paintings by Water Valley artist Amy Webb will be on display in the newly-renovated W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Gallery at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus until Oct. 18. Her show entitled “Grounding Environments” consists of 11 oil on wood paintings of domestic interiors and nocturnal environments. “My work focuses on the grounding environments found in daily life,” Webb said. These are spaces that help one stay centered in themselves, where rest and introspection can happen. Most of my works contain elements of the home that are recognizable to anyone. “I want these to serve as an invitation to reflect on the relationships we have with our living spaces, how we personalize and create comfort within them. I create scenes from the home and other familiar moments, steeped in an almost surreal feeling of presence and solitude.
