ICC's Thornton selected as member of MAST board of directors

Alicia King Thornton of Tupelo, Surgical Technology program director at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a member of the board of directors for the Mississippi Association of Surgical Technology for a two-year term.             A native of Verona, Thornton is a graduate of Shannon High School and ICC (Associate of Arts degree). She was accepted into the Surgical Technology program in the summer of 2012 and earned the Associate of Applied Sciences degree in 2013. Her additional education background includes certification as Surgical First Assistant (training with Baptist Hospital) and the Bachelor of Health Science degree from the University of Mississippi.             Her employment history includes Baptist Golden Triangle in Columbus and East Mississippi Community College (Surgical Technology program director). Thornton rejoined the ICC family in 2022 in her current position.             Additional memberships include the Association of Surgical Technology, Association of Surgical Assistants and First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church in Aberdeen.             She and her husband, Jirmychael, have two sons, Asher, 2; and Ashten, 5 months.             The Association of Surgical Technologists was established in 1969 by members of the ...

ICC continues registration for eLearning second four-week classes

            Registration is continuing at Itawamba Community College for eLearning second four-week classes.             Classes begin on Apr. 10, and the registration deadline is Apr. 11.             ICC offers academic, career education, health sciences, workforce and online classes.             For more information, call (662) 862-8000 or email eadviser@iccms.edu.

Apri 1 is deadline to apply for ICC Indian Delegation

April 1 is the deadline for applications for Itawamba Community College’s Indian Delegation.             The student recruiting team members serve as goodwill ambassadors for ICC. Members are involved in activities directly related to recruiting and public relations, including but not limited to, ICC tours, visiting area high schools, community outreach, college days/nights and special meetings and events.             In addition to other requirements, Indian Delegation members must maintain a minimum of 15 hours per semester and a 2.5 or better grade point average.             Members are eligible for a $350 scholarship per semester (maximum of four semesters), one hour of class credit each semester based on participation, involvement, class attendance and exam and special training and experiences in personal development, interpersonal communication and community college recruiting and public relations activities.             For more information and an application, email delegate@iccms.edu or call (662) 862-8428.

ICC launches partnership with TimelyMD to connect faculty, staff, students with mental and physical health resources

Itawamba Community College has launched a partnership with TimelyMD to connect full-time faculty and currently-enrolled students to the support and resources in both mental and physical health they need to succeed. TimelyCare provides on-demand 24/7 service that offers virtual health and well-being to currently-enrolled students and full-time faculty and staff for free, according to Dr. Brad Boggs, vice president of Student Services, including mental and emotional support, health literacy guidance and crisis management by masters-level behavioral health professionals. “It also provides a dedicated phone line for full-time faculty and staff to reach the TimelyCare team for guidance and support in cases of student distress.” Those covered may choose the visit modality that works best for them - video, phone or video chat. The simple, flexible scheduling enables students to choose their provider, day and time as well as cancel a visit and select the next available time that works best for them. ICC art students among winners in 2023 MCCAIA State Student Art Competition

            Itawamba Community College art students are among award winners in the 2023 MCCAIA State Student Art Competition hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia.             They include Jordan Springer of Mooreville, second place in 3-D/Sculpture for “Jean Banjo;” Emily Sauerwein of Pontotoc, third place in 3-D/Sculpture for “London’s Worst;” Audre George of Pontotoc, first place in Drawing for “Self Portrait;” Piper Cutshall of Iuka, honorable mention in Drawing for “Old Hollywood;” Makenzie Davis of Smithville, first place in 2-D Design for “Jung Ho Yeon” and third place in the same category for “Street Art;” Maria Tinajero of Ecru, honorable mention in 2-D Design for “Ode to Kahlo;” and Mia Coggin of Plantersville, first place in Painting/Mixed Media for “Fruit Juice.”             ICC received eight of the 25 awards for categories they could enter, or 32 percent. Together, ICC and Hinds community College received 17 of the total 33 awards, according to ICC art instructor Dr. Dana Arnold.

ICC, MSU sign memorandum of understanding for successful transfer of honors credits

           Itawamba Community College and Mississippi State University have signed a memorandum of understanding to successfully transfer honors credits.             The agreement, which was signed by ICC President Dr. Jay Allen and MSU Provost and Executive Vice President Dr. David Shaw late yesterday afternoon, will enable seamless transfer of the credits from ICC to the Shackouls Honors College at MSU.             Students from ICC seeking admission to the Shackouls Honors College at Mississippi State must follow the standard admissions procedures for transfer students, according to the agreement, and honors credits transferred from ICC will count at MSU.  There are two pathways for an ICC student to graduate in good standing from the Shackouls Honors College, including The Cursus Pathway (two specified honors courses, at least one three credit 3000-level Honors Interdisciplinary course with a grade of ‘C’ or higher and a for-credit Study Abroad, additional foreign language course or a faculty-led research project and successfully writing and defending an Honors thesis (0-6 credits). ICC's Board of Trustees elects officers for 2023

Marilyn Sumerford of Smithville has been elected chairman of the Itawamba Community College Board of Trustees for 2023.             Other officers include Steve Coleman of Pontotoc, first vice chairman; Ronnie Gholston of Fulton, second vice chairman; Dr. Jerome Smith of Okolona, secretary; and Gill Simmons of Tupelo, immediate past chairman.             Also serving on ICC’s Board of Trustees are Jeanette Atkins, Danny Gladney, Mac Allen Thomas, all of Aberdeen; Skip Scaggs of Amory; Dan Bishop of Baldwyn; Bonnie Webb of Belden; Greg McKissick of Blue Springs; Don Loden, Stacy Russell, both of Fulton; John Atkinson, Ollie Young, both of Houston; Mark Tigner of Mantachie; Bud Wiygul of Nettleton; Amy Anderson of Okolona; Gerald Bell, Ted Foster, Phyllis High, Danny Robbins, all of Pontotoc; Duane Jones of Shannon; Steve Eaton of Woodland.

"Women's Private Writing as a Public Resource" is topic of Mar. 28 ICC lecture series

Dr. Bridget Smith Pieschel will present “Women’s Private Writing as a Public Resource” at 6 p.m., Mar. 28, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Lecture Demonstration Room on the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus.             A native of Louisville, she earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Mississippi University for Women and the doctorate from the University of Alabama.             Now retired after 39 years, 25 of those in supervisory positions, she is Emerita Professor of English and Women’s Studies. Her career at The W included serving as the director of the Honors Program, as the dean of the Division of Humanities and twice as chair of the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy. She became the director of the Center for Women’s Research and Public Policy at The W in 2005.             Her honors include recipient of the MUW Medal of Excellence in 2005 and the Kossen Distinguished Faculty Award in 2012.             She gives numerous presentations each year to university, professional, civic and student groups about MUW’s history and 19th-century women’s education. ICC's Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa receives multiple regional awards

The Upsilon Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Itawamba Community College received multiple awards at the organization’s Mississippi/Louisiana Regional Conference, Mar. 2-3, at Mississippi State University. They include, all for 2023, Horizon (advisers Robin Lowe of Amory, Jay Humphries of Vina, Ala. and Bradley Howard of Saltillo); Distinguished Chapter Officer (Lexi Tabbs of Red Bay, Ala.); Distinguished Adviser Team (Robin Lowe, Jay Humphries, Bradley Howard); Order of the Golden Key (Lexi Tabbs); Honors in Action second place; Theme 6 for Honors in Action, The Nostalgia of Play; Regional Reporter Emory Reinhard of Mantachie; (Distinguished Chapter Finalist (ranked sixth in Region) and Five Star Chapter. The chapter has had a regional officer every year since 2010. Upsilon Sigma selected The Nostalgia of Play: Theme 6 from among seven Honors in Action themes. The projects require substantive academic investigation of a theme related to the Society’s current Honors Study Topic. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for the two-year college. March 24 ICC Spring Preview Day provides opportunity for high school juniors

           High school juniors will have an opportunity to learn about student life at Itawamba Community College during Spring Preview Day, Mar. 24, from 9 a.m.-noon at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus.             The schedule includes arrival and check-in, 8:15-8:50 a.m.; welcome, 9 a.m.; preview expo and campus tours, 9:15 a.m.; and optional lunch at the dining hall ($6 per additional person), noon.             The Spring Preview Day will include information about ICC’s new schools of, including academic, health science and career education programs, and participants can interact directly with faculty within the areas. The preview expo will enable prospective students to visit with programs, offices, departments and student organizations to learn more about academic and student involvement opportunities.             According to Michael Holloway, director of recruitment and orientation, Spring Preview Day is designed specifically for high school juniors to learn about all aspects of student life; however, high school seniors who have not visited ICC before may attend.
