ICC students place in SKD creative writing competiton

              Several Itawamba Community College students have placed in the Sigma Kappa Delta chapter's creative writing competition.             They include Dixie Owens of Amory, third place in poetry for “Staring;” second place in short story for “Good Morning” and third place in short story for “Hide and Seek;” Emma Logan of Fulton, first place in literary essay for “Literature and Disney Classics;” Sydney Freeman of Houston, honorable mention in poetry for “Tamagotchi;” Madeline Comer of Mantachie, first place in poetry for “Just Pictures;” Emory Reinhard of Mantachie, honorable mention in short story for “Deborah and Candice;” Adam Harmon of Nettleton, first place in short story for “Amidst Butterflies and Crows;” Anna Maldonado of Nettleton, first place in essay (creative nonfiction) for “Tied up with Twins;” Kent Humphries of Vina, Ala., first place in drama for “Nun with a Gun;” and Mackenzie Sneed of Thaxton, second place in poetry for “Ink.”             They will be recognized during SKD’s induction ceremony, Apr. 17 at 6 p.m. at the W.O. ICC schedules Legal Studies Day

            Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for a Legal Studies Day scheduled for Apr. 14 at the David C. Cole Student Services Building on the Fulton Campus.             High school seniors are invited to explore the opportunities available through ICC’s School of Legal Studies, according to Dr. Michelle Sumerel, vice president of instructional services.             Interactive demonstrations will highlight opportunities in criminal justice, pre-law, paralegal and political science.             Check-in is scheduled for 9-9:30 a.m.             For more information or to register, email jmsumerel@iccms.edu or call (662) 862-8050.

Registration underway for Fundamentals of Restaurant Startup class at ICC-Belden

           Registration is underway for a Fundamentals of Restaurant Startup class that will begin soon at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center.             The class meets three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) from 1-3 p.m. for two weeks.             Included are general startup/finance (success rates, common mistakes, restaurant types and financials), menu and pricing, brick and mortar vs. food truck (ownership types, lease vs. purchase, permits and inspections), employee training and hiring (interviewing, onboarding, customer service), leadership and management and social media/business plan (marketing).             The fee is $150.             For more information or to register, contact instructor Christy Scheuer at (662) 407-1505 or email acscheuer@iccms.edu or pathways@iccms.edu.

Registration continues for ICC orientation sessions for students who plan to enroll in the fall

            Registration is continuing at Itawamba Community College for orientation sessions for students who plan to enroll for the 2023 fall semester.             2023 high school graduates are required to participate in one of the sessions, which are scheduled for the Fulton Campus – Apr. 21 and 28, June 13 and 15 and July 11 and 13, 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and the Tupelo Campus – June 14 and July 12, all at 1 p.m. A special honors orientation for those with a 24 ACT or higher is scheduled for Apr. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Fulton Campus. Students can attend a session regardless of the location they plan to attend. ICC's PMMT program receives $20,000 Gene Haas Foundation grant

                                            Itawamba Community College’s Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology program has received a $20,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation.             According to Dylan Baldwin, ICC’s director of Career Education, the funds are being used for financial aid for several students. “We appreciate very much the investment by the Haas Foundation in ICC’s Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology program,” Baldwin said. “Not only is it an investment in the program, but it is an investment in the futures of our students.”             In 1999, Gene Haas formed the foundation, which bears his name because he grew up with a strong social conscience instilled by his family. It was initially designed to fund the needs of the local community. Haas Automation is now a billion-dollar company. The focus of the foundation has shifted to the current outreach and methodology.             Itawamba Community College’s Fashion Tribe will present its spring show, “POP!,” Apr. 5 at 7 p.m. in the W.O. ICC's Thornton selected as member of MAST board of directors

Alicia King Thornton of Tupelo, Surgical Technology program director at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a member of the board of directors for the Mississippi Association of Surgical Technology for a two-year term.             A native of Verona, Thornton is a graduate of Shannon High School and ICC (Associate of Arts degree). She was accepted into the Surgical Technology program in the summer of 2012 and earned the Associate of Applied Sciences degree in 2013. Her additional education background includes certification as Surgical First Assistant (training with Baptist Hospital) and the Bachelor of Health Science degree from the University of Mississippi.             Her employment history includes Baptist Golden Triangle in Columbus and East Mississippi Community College (Surgical Technology program director). Thornton rejoined the ICC family in 2022 in her current position.             Additional memberships include the Association of Surgical Technology, Association of Surgical Assistants and First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church in Aberdeen.             She and her husband, Jirmychael, have two sons, Asher, 2; and Ashten, 5 months.             The Association of Surgical Technologists was established in 1969 by members of the ...

Apri 1 is deadline to apply for ICC Indian Delegation

April 1 is the deadline for applications for Itawamba Community College’s Indian Delegation.             The student recruiting team members serve as goodwill ambassadors for ICC. Members are involved in activities directly related to recruiting and public relations, including but not limited to, ICC tours, visiting area high schools, community outreach, college days/nights and special meetings and events.             In addition to other requirements, Indian Delegation members must maintain a minimum of 15 hours per semester and a 2.5 or better grade point average.             Members are eligible for a $350 scholarship per semester (maximum of four semesters), one hour of class credit each semester based on participation, involvement, class attendance and exam and special training and experiences in personal development, interpersonal communication and community college recruiting and public relations activities.             For more information and an application, email delegate@iccms.edu or call (662) 862-8428.

ICC launches partnership with TimelyMD to connect faculty, staff, students with mental and physical health resources

Itawamba Community College has launched a partnership with TimelyMD to connect full-time faculty and currently-enrolled students to the support and resources in both mental and physical health they need to succeed. TimelyCare provides on-demand 24/7 service that offers virtual health and well-being to currently-enrolled students and full-time faculty and staff for free, according to Dr. Brad Boggs, vice president of Student Services, including mental and emotional support, health literacy guidance and crisis management by masters-level behavioral health professionals. “It also provides a dedicated phone line for full-time faculty and staff to reach the TimelyCare team for guidance and support in cases of student distress.” Those covered may choose the visit modality that works best for them - video, phone or video chat. The simple, flexible scheduling enables students to choose their provider, day and time as well as cancel a visit and select the next available time that works best for them.
