ICC's Salinas selected semifinalist for prestigious Cooke scholarship

            Itawamba Community College sophomore Diana Salinas of Golden has been named one of five semifinalists from Mississippi for the prestigious Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.             This year’s 406 semifinalists were chosen from a pool of more than 1,500 applicants attending 398 community colleges in 44 states and the District of Columbia, according to an announcement from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.             Salinas is majoring in computer science at ICC, where she is vice president of the Student Government Association, president of the Computer Science Club, Diamond Girl, member of the Honors College and vice president of leadership and regional reporter for Phi Theta Kappa. Her honors include Hall of Fame, Dean’s and President’s lists, SGA Scholarship, Dean’s Scholarship, All-Mississippi Academic Team and NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars. Her community and church activities are translating, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and tutoring. She plans to transfer to the University of Mississippi. Her parents are Gabriela Cortes and Santos Vazquez. Work of Victoria Cummings-Bobo now on display in ICC gallery

            The work of Victoria Cummings-Bobo is currently on display in the gallery of the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center at the Fulton Camps.             The exhibition titled “Enchanted Child’s Dream,” which features a collection of oil, acrylic and mixed media pieces to commemorate Black History Month, will be on display until Mar. 31.             Bobo’s work uses household items or something nature provides to tell colorful and vibrant stories. Her work ranges from miniature models, which reflect everyday people to vibrant paintings and statuesque colorful objects. She combines her art and her faith by using adorned mannequins to teach Sunday School classes at New Temple Baptist Church. Bobo’s love of the arts has included poetry, acting and playing the piano. After a time in New York City, she returned to Dorsey in 1987, and in 1988, Bobo and her sister, Dr. Ormella Cummings, formed We Amend Minds-By-Action, an organization devoted to introducing cultural activities and enrichment programs to young people and adults in Itawamba County and the surrounding area. Scaggs joins ICC Board of Trustees

            William Nickles “Skip” Scaggs of Amory has been appointed to the Itawamba Community College Board of Trustees.             Currently the executive director of the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association, Scaggs has been previously employed with the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce and the Mississippi Development Authority.             His educational background includes Meridian Community College, Stetson University and Jackson State University.             Scaggs’ civic and church activities include chair of the North Mississippi Medical Center Amory-Gilmore Board of Advisors, chair of the Mississippi District Export Council, member of the executive committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi, member of the board of directors of the Mississippi Auto Manufacturing Association and vestry member of St. John’s in Aberdeen.             He and his wife, the former Brenda Thornhill, are the parents of Zachary, 16; and Carter, 13.             Scaggs fills the unexpired term of long-time Board of Trustees member Thomas Griffith of Amory.            

ICC Films to host screening, Apr. 6; open to students, employees and public

            ICC Films will host a film screening, A NIGHT WITH RISING STARS, Apr. 6, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Auditorium on the Fulton Campus.             The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for students to walk the red carpet and have their pictures made (optional). Dress can be formal or casual.             The screening of the two films will begin at 7 p.m. “Ruby,” which was written by Jade Keaton of Tupelo and directed by Charlie Wright of Pontotoc, stars Annaka Langley of Houston and Ashlyn Holcomb of Fulton. “Mississippi Minute” stars Ryan Perich of Saltillo and Patrick Gallagher (Los Angeles, Calif.) from “Night at the Museum.”             The event is free to the public, and concessions will be available for purchase. ICC to present "Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play," with public tickets available Feb. 25-27

Itawamba Community College will present “Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play” by Joe Landry, Feb. 25-27 at 7 p.m. at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Auditorium on the Fulton Campus.             Due to COVID-19 restrictions, seating is limited and socially distanced.             Produced by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc., the unique 1940s era show will feature live Foley sound effects and three Hitchcock favorites: “The Lodger,” “Sabotage” and “The 39 Steps.”             Members of the cast and crew include Adam Whitten of Fulton; Tony (Matt) Savell of Philadelphia; Zion Cooper and Gabrielle Cooper, both of Russellville, Ala.; Isaac Floyd of Tupelo; and Trinity Eacholes of West Point.             Admission is $8, and tickets are available at www.iccms.edu/VintageHitchcock!  

ICC Pathway programs set to begin in March

            Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for several pathway programs that are scheduled to begin in March.             They include Commercial Truck Driving, Food Service Pathway, Small Engine Repair and Introduction to Welding and Cutting.             Commercial Truck Driving begins Mar. 29 and meets Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Tupelo Campus. The program prepares individuals to drive Class A semi trucks and other commercial vehicles. It includes instruction in operating diesel-powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records and keeping necessary records.             The Food Service Pathway class will begin Mar. 22 and meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Belden Center. The program includes Serve Safe® Food Manager Certification, Serve Safe® Alcohol Certification, CPR, certificate of completion, proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices, culinary techniques, interview skills and résumé building, money handling and front and back of the house operations. Alum Bishop Alexander to speak at ICC's Unity programs at Fulton, Tupelo

          Itawamba Community College alumnus Bishop Alexander, who is the director of Alumni Relations at the University of North Alabama, will be the featured speaker for Unity programs in Celebration of Black History Month, Feb. 24, at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses.             The Tupelo Campus program is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Dining Hall of the Academic and Student Center, and the Fulton Campus program, 6 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on seating, the general public is invited to participate via ZOOM. Registration continues for ICC Gateway program

Registration is continuing for the Gateway program at Itawamba Community College.             The program is designed for individuals who are between the ages of 16-24, do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent, want career coaching and are serious about exploring employment opportunities. In addition, those who have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma may qualify if they have another type of barrier, including but not limited to, single parent, low income, disabilities and homeless. Enrollments are currently being accepted for participants in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. Open enrollment for classes in the one-week program begins Mondays at 9 a.m. at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.).
