Area ICC graduates take advantage of C2C program

           Several area residents are among recent graduates at Itawamba Community College, who earned degrees with assistance from a statewide program that is designed to help Mississippi adults who have earned previous college credit.             C2C is a statewide program designed to help Mississippi adults who have earned college credit, but not a degree, to better their lives by completing a college education, according to Dr. Emily Tucker, ICC recruitment coordinator, adviser and C2C liaison.             The graduates include Jimi Dylan Tackett, Tiffany McDonald, both of Amory; John Foster of Blue Springs; Carol Blaylock of Dennis; Pamela Spruill of Derma; Alexandria Blanchard, Payton Green, both of Fulton; Chiqita Cook of Houston; Johnathan Gregory of New Albany; Roy Freeman of Okolona; Willie Orr of Prairie; Lauren Palladino of Saltillo; Kathryn Bushway of Shannon; Darby Dabbs of Smithville; Rasheeda Iyanda, Amy Clayton, Zachary McMickin, all of Tupelo; and Tara Griffin of Woodland.             Program participants at ICC are connected to a C2C coach, who works to maximize the application of earned credits toward a degree, Tucker said. ICC releases latest reopening plan for Aug. 17

            As Aug. 17 approaches, Itawamba Community College has released information that will provide a glimpse of what to expect for the fall semester at all three of its locations, Fulton, Tupelo and Belden.             The plan was developed based on guidance from healthcare professionals, feedback from employees and students as well as ICC leadership and recommendations from the College’s reopening task force, according to President Dr. Jay Allen.  “The information provides an overview as we plan to welcome students back to our locations when classes begin on Aug. 17. Every decision that continues to be made prioritizes the safety of our students, employees and communities we serve.”             The plan covers such areas as academics, residence halls, campus dining and student experience.             In addition, a self-reporting app will be implemented for all students and employees to allow for symptom checking and contact tracing. All students will complete an ICC-specific Canvas module, Safely Together, on ways to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and how members of the college community can continue to stay safely together, Allen said.             ...

Registration continues for 2020 fall semester classes

            Registration at Itawamba Community College is continuing for the 2020 fall semester.             Students can register weekdays any time between Aug. 3-14 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the David C. Cole Student Services Building at the Fulton Campus and the Academic and Student Center at the Tupelo Campus. Extended registration hours are scheduled at the Tupelo Campus from 4:30-7 p.m., Aug. 12; and 4:30-6 p.m., Aug. 13.             Traditional day classes begin Aug. 17; and eLearning full-term and eight-week classes, Aug. 24.             Financial aid is available, as well as adult learner scholarships.             Academic, career education, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden. Food Service Pathway class to begin July 27

            Itawamba Community College has scheduled a six-week Food Service Pathway class at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) beginning July 27.             Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.             The program includes Serve Safe® Food Manager Certification, Serve Safe® Alcohol Certification, CPR, certificate of completion, proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices, culinary techniques, interview skills and résumé building, money handling and front of the house and back of the house operations.             For more information or to register, contact program director Christy Scheuer at acscheuer@iccms.edu or (662) 407-1505; or pathway coordinator Josh Gammill at jegammill@iccms.edu or (662) 407-1569.  

ICC offers intersession from Aug. 3-14

            Itawamba Community College is offering an opportunity for students to enroll in four traditional classes during an intersession, which begins Aug. 3 and ends with final examinations on Aug. 14, prior to the beginning of the 2020 fall semester.             The schedule includes American (U.S.) History I, College Life, General Psychology and Public Speaking I. All classes meet from 8-10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, at the Fulton Campus.             “Traditionally, ICC has offered classes during an intersession between the conclusion of the spring semester and the beginning of the summer semester,” said Dr. Melissa Haab, dean of enrollment services. “The classes will enable students to enroll and complete traditional academic classes that are requirements for most associate degree programs in a compacted format. They are face-to-face classes that will enable interaction between students and faculty in a classroom setting where the Mississippi State Department of Health and Center for Disease Control COVID guidelines are followed. ”             To register, email eadviser@iccms.edu, and for more information, admissions@iccms.edu.

ICC spring online retention rate, success rates higher

            Itawamba Community College’s transition to online classes immediately following spring break due to the COVID-19 pandemic did not adversely impact the class retention rate, according to Denise Gillespie, dean of eLearning.             In fact, spring retention for online classes was 87.6 percent, which is above the approximate average of 85 percent. “The rate is only two-to-three percent lower on average than the on-campus classes, and the national average is that online has 10-20 percent lower retention rate than traditional classes,” Gillespie said. “There was a big jump in success rates for online classes in the spring with 95 percent of students completing the semester with a ‘C’ or better average.” She noted that the average rate always ranges from 80-85 percent.             Gillespie said that she believes that ICC’s 19-1 student-teacher ratio has a significant impact. “Local faculty and eLearning support staff on campus are invested in the success of local students at a lower price than some options.”             Another factor could be ICC’s new remote proctoring system, which allows for students to take proctored ...

Aug. 21 deadline to apply for Adult Learner Incentive scholarship

           Aug. 21 is the deadline to apply for the Adult Learner Incentive Scholarship for those enrolling for the 2020 fall semester at Itawamba Community College.             To apply for the scholarship, students must be Mississippi residents, 21 years of age or older and enrolling in classes to pursue a degree. Full-time recipients, who are enrolled in a minimum of 15 hours, will receive $2,000 ($500 per semester), and part-time recipients, who are enrolled in a minimum of six hours, will receive $1,000 ($250 per semester).             The Adult Learner scholarship must be used in consecutive semesters. Eligibility must begin the first semester of attendance and cannot be used more than once. ICC offers ACT preparation sessions

           The Continuing Education Department of Itawamba Community College has scheduled several sessions for Preparing for the ACT. All meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.             Math and science sessions include Aug. 29, Oct. 17, Dec. 5, Jan. 30, Apr. 10 and May 29. English and reading are offered Sept. 5, Oct. 10, Nov. 21, Jan. 23, Apr. 3 and June 5.             ICC’s ACT prep instructors use intensive classroom review procedures in English, reading, science reasoning and math that focus on strategies for improving scores by three methods: review of all concepts tested, tips for overcoming test anxiety and guides for “’studying smart” that will help improve test-day performance. Instructors effectively communicate techniques to help students perform with confidence. Pre-test and post-test full-length ACT practice tests are administered to measure performance.           Several pathway programs are scheduled to begin Aug. 10 and 11 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center.           They include Certified Nursing Assistant, Aug. 10 (Monday, Wednesday – 5-9 p.m.); Phlebotomy Technician, Aug. 11 (Tuesday, Thursday, 5:30-9:30 p.m.); Pharmacy Technician, Aug. 11 (Tuesday, Thursday, 6-9 p.m.); Emergency Medical Technician, Aug. 11 (Tuesday, Thursday, 5-10 p.m.); Business Office Specialist, Aug. 11 (Tuesday, Thursday, 5:30-9:30 p.m.); Introduction to Welding and Cutting, Aug. 11 (Tuesday, Thursday, 6-9 p.m.); and Basics of Residential Wiring, Aug. 11 (Tuesday, Thursday, 6-9 p.m.)           ICC’s pathway programs are designed to prepare individuals with the high-performance skills necessary to enter the job market or to transition to an advanced related program at the College. Also, the programs equip students to become quality employees.
