TPSD, ICC partner to form middle college

  In a historic move to provide additional educational opportunities for students, a joint agreement was codified between the Tupelo Public School District and Itawamba Community College on Tuesday to create an innovative Middle College. The first of its kind in North Mississippi, this program will allow qualified Tupelo High School students to graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree from ICC. Launching in August, an initial pilot cohort of THS juniors will attend classes at the ICC Tupelo campus for the majority of the school day while also taking class at THS. ICC students can take advantage of Mississippi Works Career-Tech Scholars Program

            Itawamba Community College students who enroll in one of 18 career education programs this fall can take advantage of a new scholarship program.             The Mississippi Works Career-Tech Scholars Program, administered by the Mississippi Community College Board, has been established to serve as a state-assisted tuition scholarship program for eligible community and junior college students by providing tuition financial assistance to those who enroll in approved, in-demand Career Education certificate and Associate of Applied Science degree programs identified through sector analysis to meet the workforce demands of the state, according to Emily Tucker, ICC adviser and recruitment coordinator.             Programs at ICC include Emergency Medical Tech-Paramedic, Health Information Technology, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, Practical Nursing, Public Health Technology, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Care Technology, Surgical Technology, Computer Networking Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology, Welding and Cutting Technology, Computer Programming Technology, Diesel Equipment Technology, Electrical Technology, Automotive Technology and Collision Repair Technology.             To be eligible for the program, students must be legal residents of Mississippi, admitted to an approved Mississippi Works ...

Registration continues; Student Services plans extended hours

            Registration is continuing for fall semester classes at Itawamba Community College, and those who wish to sign up can take advantage of extended hours.             In addition to regular hours of 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., from July 29-Aug. 1, the Student Services areas of admissions, financial aid and advising will be open until 6 p.m. in the Student Support Center at the Tupelo Campus.             Traditional day and first eight-week classes begin Aug. 12, and eLearning full-term day and first eight-week classes, Aug. 26.             Financial aid is available, as well as adult learner and Mississippi Works CTE Scholars Program assistance.             Academic, career education, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden. ICC sets fall semester open registration

            Open registration at Itawamba Community College has been scheduled for the 2019 fall semester.             Dates and times include Aug. 7 from 4:30-7 p.m., Aug. 8 from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Aug. 9 from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Student Support Center at the Tupelo Campus; and Aug. 8-9 from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the David C. Cole Student Services Building at the Fulton Campus.             It is possible to register for fall semester classes through Aug. 15 for traditional classes and the August eight-week traditional accelerated term; Aug. 27 for the August eight-week eLearning term and Aug. 30 for full-term eLearning classes, but a late registration fee of $15 will be assessed. Three ICC graduates selected for Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program

            JACKSON, Miss –Sydney Franks of Saltillo, Cole Stephens of Mantachie and William “Ti” Simpson of Okolona have been selected to participate in the undergraduate portion of the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program (MRPSP).             Franks is the daughter of Fred Franks Jr. and Carin Franks of Saltillo.  Stephens’ parents are Craig and Shaye Stephens of Mantachie.   Simpson is the son of Billy and Judy Simpson of Tupelo.                 Created in 2007, MRPSP identifies college sophomores and juniors who demonstrate the necessary commitment and academic achievement to become competent, well-trained rural primary care physicians in our state. The program offers undergraduate academic enrichment and a clinical experience in a rural setting. Upon completion of all medical school admissions requirements, the student can be admitted to the University of Mississippi School of Medicine or William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine.                During medical school, each MRPSP scholar may receive $30,000 per year based on available funding. ICC offers Industrial Maintenance short-term classes

            The Itawamba Community College Division of Economic and Community Services is offering an opportunity for individuals to sharpen their skills and learn more about industrial maintenance with a series of short-term classes beginning Aug. 6.             Classes meet at the ICC Belden Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. They include Basic Electricity, Aug. 6-20; Advanced Electricity, Aug. 22-Sept. 5; PLC-RSLogix for AB 5/500/MICROLOGIX, Sept. 4-18; Mechanical Drives, Sept. 4-Oct. 4; Fluid Power, Sept. 10-Oct. 8; Electrical Control Systems, Oct. 10-24; Industrial Control Wiring, Oct. 29-Nov. 12; Control Logix System Fundamentals and Programming, Oct. 30-Nov. 13; and Troubleshooting, Nov. 14-Dec. 3.             Cost per 40-hour class is $480.             For more information or to register, contact Becky Kelly at (662) 407-1500 or email rakelly@iccms.edu.

Essentials of Human Resources class set for Aug. 15

            Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for a class in the 2019 Society for Human Resource Management Essentials of Human Resources, which will begin Aug. 15 at the Belden Center.             The class will meet on Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. through Sept. 12. It is an introductory course that offers a comprehensive overview of six key aspects of HR, including talent acquisition, total rewards, learning and development, performance management and employment law. It gives participants foundational knowledge and an introduction to behavioral competencies that are essential for business success. A SHRM certified instructor will provide subject-matter expertise, insights and guidance. The class also offers an opportunity for networking as well as for participants to begin their journey to earn certification with a structured learning experience of basic HR responsibilities.             Cost of the class is $500. ICC seeks nominations for Athletic Hall of Fame and Alumnus of the Year

            Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 Alumnus of the Year and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees at Itawamba Community College through Aug. 1.             Those selected will be honored during homecoming activities Oct. 3 at the Fulton Campus.             Criteria for selection for Alumnus of the Year include successful completion of at least one semester as a full-time student at ICC five years prior to the current year and merit and achievement which have brought fame and honor to either his/her community or ICC.             ICC’s Athletic Hall of Fame honors former athletes, coaches or individuals who have excelled or those who have made major contributions to intercollegiate athletics while attending or employed by ICC. Athletic Hall of Fame inductees must have been out of school at least 10 years. Mills, Nichols selected for MCC Leadership Academy

          Itawamba Community College’s Dr. Jada Jamerson Mills of Fulton, Natural Science Division chair and biology instructor, and Diann Mills Nichols of Golden, assessment coordinator, have been selected as participants in the 2019-20 Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy.             Mills, who has been a member of the ICC faculty since 2010, also serves as Science Club sponsor. She earned the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Mississippi. Among her honors and awards are ICC Leadership Development Institute, past Faculty Association president, Meritorious award and Award of Excellence; and at the University of Mississippi, both Outstanding Doctoral Student and Master’s Degree  Student, Graduate Instructorship for NSF grant and Advanced Placement Institute graduate for AP biology. Mills also serves on various committees at ICC. Her professional memberships include Mississippi Academy of Sciences, Phi Kappa Phi and Women in Higher Education Mississippi Network.
