ICC's summer drama camp takes humorous look at childhood

              Oh, to be young again…to climb trees, play house, double Dutch jump rope, ride bikes and roller skate.  Sounds fun,… until you remember the bumps along the way.  During Itawamba Community College’s summer drama camp, June 3-7, from 9 a.m. – noon at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Auditorium at the Fulton Campus, students leaving the second through eighth grades will take a humorous romp through childhood – looking at some of children’s most challenging moments.             During the week, campers will play fun improvisational games like “Give Me Your Best Yucky Food Face” and “Funniest Sleeping Position.”  They will make props and pictures to feature in their final program as well as act out and narrate scenes from the following children’s books:  I Don’t Want to Get Up by Dr. Seuss, The New Small Child by Lauren Child, Tales for Very Picky Eaters by Josh Sneider, and Alexander, Who’s Not (Do You Hear Me?  I Mean It!) ICC selects resident assistants for 2019

           Itawamba Community College has selected its resident assistants for the 2019 fall semester.             They include Raina Boggan of Aberdeen; Jaymes Harris of Amory; Alexian Starks of Baldwyn; Evan Hildenbrand, Layla Stevens, Anessa McMath, all of Belden; Alexandria Norman of Belmont; Remington Houston, McKenzie Cooper, Cailee Yielding, all of Fulton; Morgan Robinson of Guntown; Kevan Owen of Mooreville; Trevor Morgan, Sherman Ross, DeAngelo Bowens, Katherine Adams, all of Pontotoc; Dayton Shegog of Pope; Hannah Flake, Annabelle Bunch, both of Saltillo; Toby Homan of Shannon; Noah Walker of Thaxton; Jasmine Gilliard of Tremont; Destiny Vaughn, Maddie Morris, Morgan Aldridge, all of Tupelo; and Kyle Spencer of Woodland.             ICC has seven residence halls, Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Monroe Annex, Pontotoc and Sheffield.

Three ICC students win creative writing awards

            Three creative writing students at Itawamba Community College were among those who gathered on the Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus, Apr. 12, to receive their accolades as winners in the 2019 Mississippi Community College Creative Writers Association competition.             They included Mary-Elizabeth Moore of Red Bay, Ala., first in the drama category for “Over Your Shoulder;” Cierra Tucker of Tupelo, third place in drama for “Sam Jones and the Order of the Dodecahedron;” and Mikayla Powell of Amory, honorable mention in poetry for “Me, Too.”             The competition included seven categories: poetry, fiction, drama, creative nonfiction, literary essay, best professionally-printed journal and best in-house journal.             Judges included Dr. Don Hubele, English professor and chair of the Belhaven University English Department; Paula Lambert, literary and visionary artist and author; Phyllis W. Seawright, assistant professor of communication/theatre at Mississippi College; Michael Farris Smith, award-winning author; and Marshall Ramsey, author, syndicated cartoonist, radio/television host and editor at-large for Mississippi Today.

Choir, CenterStage auditions set for Apr. 18

            Auditions for Itawamba Community College’s choir and CenterStage for 2019 will be Apr. 18 in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center at the Fulton Campus.             Times include choir, chamber and vocal major auditions at 1 p.m., and CenterStage auditions at 3 p.m.             Students who are interested in choir and chamber singers will be vocalized, asked to match pitches and possibly sing a hymn such as “Amazing Grace.” In addition, those who are interested in chamber singers will be asked to sight-read a small piece of music. Students interested in majoring in voice must bring a prepared piece of music with either a track or music for an accompanist (if necessary), or they can make personal preparations for an accompanist.             Vocalists who are interested in CenterStage will be required to audition for the choir. Students will perform a prepared song of their choice, vocalize on various scales and sight read. Online registration begins for June, July freshman orientation sessions

            Online registration has begun for summer freshman orientation sessions at Itawamba Community College.             Sessions include June 14, 8 a.m., Fulton; June 17, 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Fulton; June 18, 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Tupelo; July 16, 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Fulton; and July 19, 8 a.m., Fulton. Locations are the Band Hall at the Fulton Campus and the Health Science Education Center at the Tupelo Campus.             The schedule includes both parent/guardian and student orientation sessions, student advising and class scheduling as well as I.D./yearbook photos. The special parent/guardian orientation will cover topics of special interest to enable them to assist their students in the transition to ICC. Morning sessions end at noon, and afternoon sessions, at 4:30 p.m.             “Students are encouraged to participate in freshman orientation as soon as possible to ensure that they can select from a wide variety of options, including days, times and instructors,” said Dr. Melissa Haab, dean of enrollment services.             ICC orientation is mandatory for all graduating high school seniors. ICC commencement ceremonies set for May 10

           Approximately 550 graduates will receive associate’s degrees or certificates in two ceremonies, May 10, at the Davis Event Center at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus.             The 11 a.m. ceremony will include graduates whose last names are A-L, and the 3 p.m. ceremony, M-Z. Associate of Arts and Associate of Applied Science degrees as well as certificates will be awarded at both ceremonies.             ICC’s commencement ceremonies are on Friday for the first time in a number of years.             Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, president and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa, will be the speaker for both ceremonies. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in community college leadership from Mississippi State University and both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from the University of Southern Mississippi.             Tincher-Ladner is the third leader of Phi Theta Kappa in 98 years. She also serves as an ex-officio member of the Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors and secretary to the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation Board of Directors. ICC small ensembles schedule Apr. 25 concert

            Itawamba Community College will present a small ensemble concert at 6:30 p.m., Apr. 25, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium on the Fulton Campus.             The concert will feature the clarinet quartet, Rush Hour saxophone quartet, brass ensemble, trombone quartet and the steel band.             Members of the clarinet quartet are Ryann Smith of Hernando; Erica Carrisoza of Nettleton; Ciera Hansen of Tupelo; and director Christy Colburn of Amory.             The Rush Hour saxophone quartet in addition to director Colburn includes Dillan Gibson of Pontotoc; Eli Buse of Saltillo and Reed Goodson of Tupelo.             Members of the brass ensemble, which is directed by Eric Simmons of Saltillo, are Staci Fox, Max Smaglick, both of Amory; Corey Spellins of Blue Springs; John Buchman of Caledonia; Wayne Clunan of Carrollton; Avery Head of Haleyville, Ala.; Zack Hedleston of Hernando; Anna Bailey, Alex Barron, both of Pontotoc; Christian Gann of Randolph; and Rain Burt of Tupelo.             The trombone quartet includes in addition to director Eric Simmons, John Buchman of Caledonia; Avery Head of Haleyville, Ala. and Max ...

Concert bands to perform Apr. 9

           Itawamba Community College’s Concert Bands will perform at 6:30 p.m., Apr. 9, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus.             The Concert Band’s program includes “Joy” by Frank Ticheli, “Spania” by David Shaffer, “Meeting at Tryon Palace” by Richard L. Saucedo and “Concerto Gross” arranged by James D. Ployhar. Selections for the Wind Ensemble are “Festival Sinfonia” by Roland Barrett, “Shenandoah – A Sea Fantasy” by Claude Smith, “Sevens” by Samuel R. Hazo, “By the Grindstone” by Ryan Todd; and “Fairest of the Fair” by John P. Sousa. The Symphonic Band will perform “An American Fanfare” by Rick Kirby, “In a Quiet Place” by Bill Calhoun and “Relativo” by Robert W. MSBC class to begin Apr. 29 at ICC-Belden

           Registration is continuing for a night class option for the Manufacturing Skills Basic Certification program, which will begin Apr. 29 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center.             The class will meet Mondays through Thursdays through June 19 from 6-9 p.m.             The program is designed to prepare students desiring to have a career in high-performance manufacturing to be successful. Through this program, students use critical thinking skills, update core skills and knowledge and will earn nationally-recognized credentials.             Developed to respond to core knowledge for the current and emerging industry sectors located within the north Mississippi region, the 94-hour MSBC program includes three national credentials – 10-hour OSHA, the American Heart Association’s CPR and the Career Readiness Certificate. Comprehensive interactive classes, computer-based tools, experienced instructors and excellent reference materials create a valuable training experience. Participants will learn how to operate a forklift; how to read a caliper, micrometer and blueprint drawing; how to perform CPR; what companies do to improve and ensure safety, productivity and quality of their processes and products and improve their computer skills.             ...
