ICC offers Industrial Maintenance short-term classes The Itawamba Community College Division of Economic and Community Services is offering an opportunity for individuals to sharpen their skills and learn more about industrial maintenance with a series of short-term classes beginning Aug. 6. Classes meet at the ICC Belden Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. They include Basic Electricity, Aug. 6-20; Advanced Electricity, Aug. 22-Sept. 5; PLC-RSLogix for AB 5/500/MICROLOGIX, Sept. 4-18; Mechanical Drives, Sept. 4-Oct. 4; Fluid Power, Sept. 10-Oct. 8; Electrical Control Systems, Oct. 10-24; Industrial Control Wiring, Oct. 29-Nov. 12; Control Logix System Fundamentals and Programming, Oct. 30-Nov. 13; and Troubleshooting, Nov. 14-Dec. 3. Essentials of Human Resources class set for Aug. 15 Registration is underway at Itawamba Community College for a class in the 2019 Society for Human Resource Management Essentials of Human Resources, which will begin Aug. 15 at the Belden Center. The class will meet on Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. through Sept. 12. It is an introductory course that offers a comprehensive overview of six key aspects of HR, including talent acquisition, total rewards, learning and development, performance management and employment law. It gives participants foundational knowledge and an introduction to behavioral competencies that are essential for business success. A SHRM certified instructor will provide subject-matter expertise, insights and guidance. The class also offers an opportunity for networking as well as for participants to begin their journey to earn certification with a structured learning experience of basic HR responsibilities. ICC seeks nominations for Athletic Hall of Fame and Alumnus of the Year Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 Alumnus of the Year and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees at Itawamba Community College through Aug. 1. Those selected will be honored during homecoming activities Oct. 3 at the Fulton Campus. Criteria for selection for Alumnus of the Year include successful completion of at least one semester as a full-time student at ICC five years prior to the current year and merit and achievement which have brought fame and honor to either his/her community or ICC. ICC’s Athletic Hall of Fame honors former athletes, coaches or individuals who have excelled or those who have made major contributions to intercollegiate athletics while attending or employed by ICC. Athletic Hall of Fame inductees must have been out of school at least 10 years. Additional criteria to be considered are accomplishments and support of ICC. Mills, Nichols selected for MCC Leadership Academy Itawamba Community College’s Dr. Jada Jamerson Mills of Fulton, Natural Science Division chair and biology instructor, and Diann Mills Nichols of Golden, assessment coordinator, have been selected as participants in the 2019-20 Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy. Mills, who has been a member of the ICC faculty since 2010, also serves as Science Club sponsor. She earned the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Mississippi. Among her honors and awards are ICC Leadership Development Institute, past Faculty Association president, Meritorious award and Award of Excellence; and at the University of Mississippi, both Outstanding Doctoral Student and Master’s Degree Student, Graduate Instructorship for NSF grant and Advanced Placement Institute graduate for AP biology. ICC's Davis selected as Moody Institute Fellow Itawamba Community College anatomy and physiology instructor Sherry Davis of Tupelo has been selected as a Moody Institute Fellow. A graduate of Tupelo High, Davis continued her education at ICC and the University of Mississippi, where she earned the B.A. degree in business, liberal arts degree in biology and master’s degree in educational leadership. She began her teaching career at Tupelo Middle School where she earned the honor of Tupelo Public School District Teacher of the Year and the Walmart/Phi Delta Kappa National Teacher of the Year. In 2002, she became a National Board Certified Teacher in Science and later taught biology for five years at Tupelo High School. Davis has 25 years of teaching experience. She currently serves as the president of the Tupelo Public School District School Board. The Moody Institute Trust Fund was established in 1990 in honor of Dr. George V. ICC reorganizes recruiting; adds staff With a renewed emphasis on enrollment services and in an effort to better serve both prospective and current students, Itawamba Community College has reorganized recruiting. Taylor Kelley of Pontotoc and Jordan Smith of Saltillo have been employed to focus exclusively on traditional student recruiting, which involves frequent visits to all high schools in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties, according to Dr. Melissa Haab, dean of enrollment services. “Taylor and Jordan will be available to assist area high school students in transitioning to Itawamba Community College,” Haab said. “In the past, ICC’s recruiters also served as academic advisers, and it was difficult to focus on both. With the reorganization, Taylor and Jordan, along with veteran recruiter Evie Storey of Ripley, become the face of ICC to incoming freshmen.” A 2015 graduate of North Pontotoc High School, Kelley earned the associate’s degree from ICC and the bachelor’s degree in integrated marketing communications from the University of Mississippi. Adult learner orientation session Adult learners are invited to participate in an evening summer orientation session from 5-8 p.m., July 18, in the Health Science Education Center at the Itawamba Community College Tupelo Campus. The schedule includes an orientation session, student advising and class scheduling as well as I.D./yearbook photos. The orientation will cover topics of special interest to enable them to transition to ICC. “Students are encouraged to participate in orientation as soon as possible to ensure that they can select from a wide variety of options, including days, times and instructors,” said Dr. Melissa Haab, dean of enrollment services. 2019 Culinary Camp for Kids Registration is underway at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center for a Culinary Camp for Kids, which is scheduled for June 24-27. Students who will be in grades 4, 5 and 6 in the fall can participate in the camp, which will meet from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Highlights include proper kitchen hygiene and safety, team-building and organizational skills and healthy child-friendly recipes. In addition, etiquette skills are practiced daily. Cost is $200 per child. Since capacity is limited, registration is necessary.
