Lowe selected as ICC's first PTK Faculty Scholar Robin Lowe of Amory, director of the Itawamba Community College Honors College, an English instructor and Phi Theta Kappa contact adviser, has been selected as a PTK Faculty Scholar. Her selection is the first in the 50-year history of Phi Theta Kappa at ICC. “I am beyond thrilled to be chosen for such a prestigious honor,” Lowe said. “Thank you, Phi Theta Kappa and ICC for this amazing opportunity.” Faculty Scholars are selected primarily on the basis of their application, but preference is given to those with the following characteristics: experience facilitating small-group discussions; intellectual curiosity, empathy and interest in the PTK Honors Study topic and Leadership Development program; understanding of or willingness to learn about Honors in Action, diversity, length of service to PTK, geographic location and field of study. Adults can take advantage of increased C2C funds in the spring to complete degree at ICC Beginning in January, adults who have earned some college credit but insufficient hours for a degree may qualify for a Complete 2 Compete grant of $1,000 per semester to finish the necessary requirements at Itawamba Community College. The grant is renewable per semester as long as the recipients remain in good academic standing. “We are excited to be able to continue to assist students with obtaining their first postsecondary degree, and we are confident that the grant increase will further accelerate our ability to do so,” said Amber Palmer, project coordinator for Mississippi Public Universities. Code Blue and Red event set Nov. 15 - it is only a drill! Itawamba Community College’s Health Sciences Division will host a Code Blue and Red event from 9-11 a.m., Nov. 15, in the Health Science Education Center at the Tupelo Campus. Twenty three students from Saltillo High School will be on campus to view this simulation of a catastrophic event, which will showcase five health science programs, said Dr. Melissa Haab, dean of enrollment services. An North Mississippi Medical Center ambulance will arrive, and the students will see first-hand the need for and the role healthcare professionals play in the process. “It will be an impactful program,” Haab said, “and the hope is that we can use this as a model for other groups to visit the campus as well as to help students see the ‘real-life’ expertise used by the graduates of ICC’s programs.” Participating programs include students and faculty from Associate Degree Nursing, Paramedic, Respiratory Care, Radiologic Technology and Surgical Technology. ICC wins national award for manufacturing camp Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs (NBT), the foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International, hosted its inaugural awards gala in Fox River Grove, Illinois, October 24, 2019. The event recognized those who share a passion for manufacturing and want to ensure its future with a thriving skilled workforce. At the event, Itawamba Community College (ICC) was awarded the Future of Industry Award for its Tek2Go Advanced Manufacturing Camp. ICC, along with partners Hawkeye Industries and Community Development Foundation (CDF), has hosted the Tek2Go Advanced Manufacturing Camp for students the past 11 years and for teachers the past four years. NBT provided the first grant to get the student camp started in the Tupelo region in 2009. NBT offered an additional grant for the first teacher camp in the summer of 2016. Currently, both camps are funded through the Toyota Wellspring Education Fund and held at the Manufacturing Solutions Center at ICC’s Belden campus. ICC receives $40,000 grant Itawamba Community College has received a $40,000 grant from the Woodward Hines Education Foundation for a minority male success program, which is being implemented on the Fulton Campus. Entitled Minority Achievement Network for Upward Progression, the program will play a major role in equipping minority male students with skills necessary to achieve academic success while fostering leadership skills and promoting professional and personal development, said Dr. Emily Tucker, recruitment coordinator and advisor. MAN UP will use a three-prong approach of academic support services, career development workshops and a mentoring program to improve academic performance, hone employment skills and promote positive values and healthy life decisions of minority males, Tucker said. “We envision that the structured academic support services, workshops and positive interactions with professional minority male role models to students will result in real life transformation, both in the classroom and outside of the academic environment,” Tucker noted.
