ICC PTK chapters win international, regional awards

            Itawamba Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapters, Beta Tau Sigma (Tupelo) and Upsilon Sigma (Fulton), were recognized Friday at the first-ever, virtual PTK Catalyst event as Top 100 Chapters of the more than 1,250 chapters internationally.             Other international awards included Distinguished Honors in Action Theme Award and Distinguished Honors in Action Project Award in the Theme 6 – Visions of Justice division for Upsilon Sigma’s project, STAND: Transforming the Stigma of Sex Trafficking. In addition, Kalyn Johnson of Fulton, president of Upsilon Sigma, received the Distinguished Chapter Officer award.             Both chapters also received awards during the MS/LA regional conference in early March at the University of Mississippi. There are 48 chapters in the MS/LA region.             Beta Tau Sigma received fourth Most Distinguished Chapter in the region; seventh in Honors In Action for Fighting the Stigma of Mental Illness; first place in Theme 3: Politics of Identity and seventh in College Project for Read, Lead, Succeed: Promoting the QEP. Registration continues for May, June and July orientation sessions

           Online registration is continuing for upcoming freshman orientation sessions at Itawamba Community College.             The available sessions, which are free and will be conducted exclusively online, include May 1; June 16 and 18; and July 10, 14 and 16.             “Students are encouraged to participate in a freshman orientation session as soon as possible to ensure that they can select from a wide variety of options, including days, times and instructors,” said Dr. Melissa Haab, dean of enrollment services. They can attend any session regardless of the location where they will be in class – Fulton, Tupelo or Belden.             Haab said that students will complete the session on the date they select, and the following business day, they will be contacted by their adviser for class registration.             ICC orientation is mandatory for all graduating high school seniors. Students must have submitted an application for admission as well as a copy of the ACT score before registering for orientation, and they should sign up as soon as possible since only a limited number can attend each session.             ...

COVID-19 continues to impact ICC; forces changes in commencement and summer classes

            The COVID-19 virus continues to impact Itawamba Community College’s normal operations and schedule of activities.             Among the latest are the 2020 commencement ceremony and summer classes.             As advised by the Center for Disease Control and the Mississippi Department of Health and after much deliberation, ICC is postponing the May commencement ceremony and is exploring options “to celebrate the accomplishments of our outstanding graduates,” according to ICC President Dr. Jay Allen.             In addition, ICC is continuing its summer schedule, but will transition all courses to an online format until it is safe to conduct face-to-face classes. Registration is currently underway for intersession classes, which begin May 11, and for traditional first summer/full-term, eLearning full-term and first and second four-week classes. Traditional first and full-term classes begin May 26, and eLearning, June 1.             “The decisions that are being made are tough and may not be ideal,” Allen said, “but we continue to make the safety of our students, employees and our communities a priority.”            

AMT application deadline extended through June 1

                The application deadline for the Advanced Manufacturing Technician program, which is offered at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center, has been extended through June 1.                 The AMT program is designed as an innovative manufacturing degree that will span five semesters of classroom instruction and provide paid, hands-0n experience at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi’s Blue Springs automotive assembly plant.                 The Industrial Maintenance curriculum includes instruction in areas, including electricity, fluid power, mechanics, fabrication and robotics, as well as advanced manufacturing, business principles and best practices. Upon completion of the program, candidates will earn an associate’s degree.                 In addition to in-depth instruction in manufacturing, the program includes semester-long modules in safety culture, workplace organization, Lean manufacturing, problem-solving and maintenance reliability, It emphasizes attendance, initiative, diligence, verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills and professionalism.                 Prospective students will be accepted based on academic success as measured through grades, class rank, math capabilities and the ability to work in a team and problem-solving environment. Ikawa selected Coca-Cola Silver Scholar

          Nami Ikawa of Saltillo, a sophomore at Itawamba Community College, has been named a 2020 Coca-Cola Academic Team Silver Scholar and will receive a $1,250 scholarship.             The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 silver and 50 Bronze Scholars across the nation with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion.             Ikawa, who is majoring in exercise science, is president of the Tupelo Campus Student Government Association; vice president of scholarship for the Beta Tau Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa; supplemental instruction leader for college algebra, English and anatomy and physiology; and student representative for the academic calendar and enrollment. judicial disciplinary hearing and graphic standards committees. Her honors include ICC Hall of Fame, Miss ICC finalist, president’s list, honor student, All-Mississippi Academic Team and Tri-State Educational Foundation Scholarship recipient. ICC accepts nominations for 2020 Alumnus of the Year, Athletic Hall of Fame

           Nominations are being accepted for the 2020 Alumnus of the Year and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees at Itawamba Community College through Aug. 1.             Those selected will be honored during homecoming activities this fall at the Fulton Campus.             Criteria for selection for Alumnus of the Year include successful completion of at least one semester as a full-time student at ICC five years prior to the current year as well as merit and achievement which have brought fame and honor to either his/her community or ICC.             ICC’s Athletic Hall of Fame honors former athletes, coaches or individuals who have excelled or those who have made major contributions to intercollegiate athletics while attending or employed by ICC. Athletic Hall of Fame inductees must have been out of school at least 10 years. ICC's Morgan, Pounds selected for prestigious Delta Scholars program

            Sophomores Katherine Morgan of Hatley and Anna Pounds of Golden are the first from Itawamba Community College to be selected for the Delta Scholars Program.             The Delta Scholars Summer Institute is a 10-day immersion program for approximately 12 undergraduates committed to improving the living experience of residents in the Mississippi Delta. Working in conjunction with the Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Fellow, the Institute will be at the Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors college on the campus of Mississippi State University. The institute will feature informational meetings with academics, policymakers and non-profit organizations in the Delta. Scholars will be mentored by the Harvard Delta Fellow and by faculty advisers who conduct research that focuses on food security, education and economic development in the region. As scholars learn the history of an issue from multidisciplinary perspectives, they will also learn how to advocate local public officials, nongovernmental agencies, business leaders and state representatives in support of an approach that helps remedy the issue. ICC extends health programs application deadline

           With the challenges presented by the coronavirus, Itawamba Community College has extended the deadline to May 1 for the submission of applications for several health-related programs at Itawamba Community College.             In addition, the new deadline to submit all required documentation for admission, including observation hours, transcripts, ACT scores and proof of certification is June 1.             The programs include associate degree nursing, health information technology, licensed practical nursing (August class), occupational therapy assistant technology, physical therapist assistant technology, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy technology and surgical technology, all at the Tupelo Campus.             For more information about program requirements, access ICC’s website at www.iccms.edu or call (662) 620-5239.

Four-week eLearning term

ICC postpones dinner theatre

     Itawamba Community College has postponed its production of “Over the River and Through the Woods,” which was scheduled Mar. 23-28, as a result of the recommendation by the Center for Disease Control and the Mississippi State Department of Health to delay gatherings of 50 or more individuals.    “This decision was difficult to make because we are aware of the many hours spent in rehearsal and preparation by the cast, crew and director for this very special event,” said ICC President Dt. Jay Allen. “It is our hope that the ‘show will go on’ at a later time!”
