Mississippi Intercollegiate Honor Band Four members of the Itawamba Community College All-American Band will participate in the first Mississippi Intercollegiate Honor Band, Mar. 23-25, at Hinds Community College. They include Yen Nguyen of Amory (flute), Karli Huddleston of Saltillo (flute), Justin Merriman of Houston (clarinet) and Brett Causey of Clinton (alto saxophone). In addition, Macy Gibson of Pontotoc (flute) was selected as first alternate. Auditions were open to all two- and four-year college band students (freshman through senior level) regardless of major. The clinician will be emeritus professor Ray Cramer from Indiana University Bloomington. He is president of the Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra convention with more than 14,000 attendees representing 28 countries and was recently named president of the American Bandmasters Association. He is the past president of the College Band Directors National Association and the Indiana Bandmasters Association. Cramer is in demand internationally as guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator, and he is a regular guest conductor of the Musashino Academy of Music Wind Ensemble in Tokyo. Student art competition The annual Itawamba Community College Student Art Competition is on display until Apr. 21 at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center gallery at the Fulton Campus. The exhibition includes approximately 73 works from a variety of different media, and 33 students contributed works to the competition and are represented in the gallery. A reception and awards ceremony is scheduled for Apr. 14 from 4-5 p.m. The exhibition will be juried by University of Central Florida art alumnus Lujan Perez of Spain. Awards include Best in Show, $150; first, $100; second, $75; third, $50; and honorable mentions. Cheer clinics/tryouts Itawamba Community College Cheer sponsor Emily Lamb has announced the dates for the 2017 Cheer Clinics and tryouts. Clinic dates will be Mar. 27 and 29 and Apr. 2 and 5 from 3-5 p.m. in the intramural gym located in the Fitness Center at the Fulton Campus. The cost is $40 for all four clinics for which attendance is mandatory. In order to try out for ICC’s 2017 cheer squad, participants must be able to perform a back handspring. Celebration of Unity programs Itawamba Community College’s Student Government Associations have scheduled Black History Month: Celebration of Unity programs at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. The Tupelo Campus program will be at 12:15 p.m., Feb. 16, in the Student Affairs presentation room of the Student Support Center, and the Fulton Campus event will be at 7 p.m., Feb. 21, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. Mack-Arthur Turner, a native of Tupelo and a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law will be the speaker for the Tupelo Campus program. He began his academic career at ICC, where he received his GED certificate. Turner then enrolled as a full-time student and earned his associate’s degree in English with special honors. During his time at ICC, Turner served as president of the Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa. He contributed to the Chieftain staff, both as a journalist and a photographer. Donald A. Baker Scholarship When Don Baker of Amory celebrated a milestone birthday, his family and friends presented a special gift to Itawamba Community College, which will benefit students for years to come. The gift was the Donald A. Baker Endowed Scholarship, which also recognized his 30 years of service to the College. That service includes more than 20 years as a member of the ICC Board of Trustees and more than 25 years as a member of the Foundation Board. “My sister, Beth, and I had no trouble getting participation from friends and family,” said Baker’s son, also named Don. “Everyone knows how much Daddy loves ICC! More than 80 friends and family members contributed to help endow the scholarship.” Full-time students from Monroe County who have financial need and who demonstrate potential for success in college are eligible to apply for the half-tuition scholarship. Baker, who was named ICC’s Alumnus of the Year in 1988, attended IJC, where he majored in commerce, from 1954-56.
