Honors Orientation set for Apr. 19

Online registration is underway for an Honors Orientation at Itawamba Community College, which will be Apr. 19 for students who score 24 or higher on the ACT. The free event begins with check-in at 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of the David C. Cole Student Services building on the Fulton Campus. Honors Orientation will include ice breakers and small group sessions conducted by ICC’s student Orientation Leaders to enable incoming freshmen to become more acclimated with ICC and campus life, according to coordinator Emily Tucker.  In addition, ICC faculty advisers and counselors will meet individually with students to discuss their major and future plans upon graduating from ICC. Students will register for their fall classes, have their photo taken for their student ID and tour the campus. “Among the advantages of Honors Orientation are scheduling classes before other incoming freshmen; completing the process before graduation from high school; selecting classes from a wide variety of days, times and instructors.” Tucker said.  “Parents are strongly encouraged to attend Honors Orientation and participate in a concurrent session, which will provide them with an opportunity to ...

All-American Band auditions

The Itawamba Community College All-American Band has scheduled auditions for Apr. 13 at the Fulton Campus. Locations and times include Drum Major (W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center), 2 p.m.; Color Guard (Fitness Center gym) and Indianettes (W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center), both at 3:30 p.m. Drum major auditions will include salute, two-to-three minutes of routine demonstrating drum major abilities, marching ability, vocal commands and conducting various time signatures. Those who audition for color guard must demonstrate basic maneuvers on equipment (spins, tosses, etc.), marching ability and the ability to learn and perform a short flag routine taught at the audition. Participants must bring their own flag. Indianette participants must demonstrate flexibility (splits, kicks, etc.) and the ability to learn and perform a short routine taught at the audition. Edwards receives Unsung Hero award

Elizabeth Edwards of Houlka, director of institutional research and accountability at Itawamba Community College, has received the Unsung Hero Award from the Mississippi Association for Institutional Research. “This is our first time to bestow this honor on a deserving member, and Liz is more than deserving,” said Eric Atchison, director of System Analysis, Research and Enrollment Management, IPEDS State Coordinator for the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, who is also MAIR vice president and 2017 program chair. “She has long-served the Association in numerous capacities, including president in 2012-2013. The award is presented to a MAIR member outside the executive committee to show appreciation for their contributions to the organization. Edwards, who is also the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Committee on Colleges liaison for ICC, has 15 years’ community college experience with the last 11 in administration and institutional research and effectiveness. Her first four years at ICC were as a program director in credit career and technical education institution and non-credit workforce training. Mississippi Intercollegiate Honor Band

Four members of the Itawamba Community College All-American Band will participate in the first Mississippi Intercollegiate Honor Band, Mar. 23-25, at Hinds Community College. They include Yen Nguyen of Amory (flute), Karli Huddleston of Saltillo (flute), Justin Merriman of Houston (clarinet) and Brett Causey of Clinton (alto saxophone). In addition, Macy Gibson of Pontotoc (flute) was selected as first alternate. Auditions were open to all two- and four-year college band students (freshman through senior level) regardless of major. The clinician will be emeritus professor Ray Cramer from Indiana University Bloomington. He is president of the Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra convention with more than 14,000 attendees representing 28 countries and was recently named president of the American Bandmasters Association. He is the past president of the College Band Directors National Association and the Indiana Bandmasters Association. Cramer is in demand internationally as guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator, and he is a regular guest conductor of the Musashino Academy of Music Wind Ensemble in Tokyo.

Health-related programs

Apr. 1 is the deadline for the submission of applications for several health-related programs at Itawamba Community College. They include associate degree nursing, health information technology, licensed practical nursing (August class), occupational therapy assistant technology, physical therapist assistant technology, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy technology and surgical technology, all at the Tupelo Campus, and public health technology, the new online program. March accelerated terms

Registration for eight-week eLearning accelerated and traditional terms is continuing at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses of Itawamba Community College.             Students may register through Mar. 10 for the traditional eight-week classes, but classes begin on Mar. 7. Registration for the eight-week eLearning classes will continue through Mar. 14, but classes begin on Mar. 13. Academic, career and technical, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are always available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden.             For more information on registration, contact Student Affairs on the Fulton Campus or Tupelo Campus or email go2icc@iccms.edu.  

Student art competition

The annual Itawamba Community College Student Art Competition is on display until Apr. 21 at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center gallery at the Fulton Campus. The exhibition includes approximately 73 works from a variety of different media, and 33 students contributed works to the competition and are represented in the gallery. A reception and awards ceremony is scheduled for Apr. 14 from 4-5 p.m. The exhibition will be juried by University of Central Florida art alumnus Lujan Perez of Spain. Awards include Best in Show, $150; first, $100; second, $75; third, $50; and honorable mentions. Cheer clinics/tryouts

Itawamba Community College Cheer sponsor Emily Lamb has announced the dates for the 2017 Cheer Clinics and tryouts. Clinic dates will be Mar. 27 and 29 and Apr. 2 and 5 from 3-5 p.m. in the intramural gym located in the Fitness Center at the Fulton Campus. The cost is $40 for all four clinics for which attendance is mandatory. In order to try out for ICC’s 2017 cheer squad, participants must be able to perform a back handspring. Tryouts are scheduled for Apr. 6 at 3 p.m. All clinics and tryouts are closed to the public, according to Lamb. Only those participating in the clinics and tryouts will be allowed in the facility. 2017 Most Beautiful Pageant

Approximately 40 contestants will compete for the title of Most Beautiful 2017 at Itawamba Community College during the annual pageant, which is scheduled for 7 p.m., Feb. 27, at the W.O. Celebration of Unity programs

Itawamba Community College’s Student Government Associations have scheduled Black History Month: Celebration of Unity programs at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. The Tupelo Campus program will be at 12:15 p.m., Feb. 16, in the Student Affairs presentation room of the Student Support Center, and the Fulton Campus event will be at 7 p.m., Feb. 21, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. Mack-Arthur Turner, a native of Tupelo and a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law will be the speaker for the Tupelo Campus program. He began his academic career at ICC, where he received his GED certificate. Turner then enrolled as a full-time student and earned his associate’s degree in English with special honors. During his time at ICC, Turner served as president of the Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa. He contributed to the Chieftain staff, both as a journalist and a photographer.
