March accelerated terms

Registration for eight-week eLearning accelerated and traditional terms is continuing at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses of Itawamba Community College.             Students may register through Mar. 10 for the traditional eight-week classes, but classes begin on Mar. 7. Registration for the eight-week eLearning classes will continue through Mar. 14, but classes begin on Mar. 13. Academic, career and technical, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are always available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden.             For more information on registration, contact Student Affairs on the Fulton Campus or Tupelo Campus or email go2icc@iccms.edu.  

Student art competition

The annual Itawamba Community College Student Art Competition is on display until Apr. 21 at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center gallery at the Fulton Campus. The exhibition includes approximately 73 works from a variety of different media, and 33 students contributed works to the competition and are represented in the gallery. A reception and awards ceremony is scheduled for Apr. 14 from 4-5 p.m. The exhibition will be juried by University of Central Florida art alumnus Lujan Perez of Spain. Awards include Best in Show, $150; first, $100; second, $75; third, $50; and honorable mentions. Cheer clinics/tryouts

Itawamba Community College Cheer sponsor Emily Lamb has announced the dates for the 2017 Cheer Clinics and tryouts. Clinic dates will be Mar. 27 and 29 and Apr. 2 and 5 from 3-5 p.m. in the intramural gym located in the Fitness Center at the Fulton Campus. The cost is $40 for all four clinics for which attendance is mandatory. In order to try out for ICC’s 2017 cheer squad, participants must be able to perform a back handspring. Tryouts are scheduled for Apr. 6 at 3 p.m. All clinics and tryouts are closed to the public, according to Lamb. Only those participating in the clinics and tryouts will be allowed in the facility. 2017 Most Beautiful Pageant

Approximately 40 contestants will compete for the title of Most Beautiful 2017 at Itawamba Community College during the annual pageant, which is scheduled for 7 p.m., Feb. 27, at the W.O. Celebration of Unity programs

Itawamba Community College’s Student Government Associations have scheduled Black History Month: Celebration of Unity programs at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. The Tupelo Campus program will be at 12:15 p.m., Feb. 16, in the Student Affairs presentation room of the Student Support Center, and the Fulton Campus event will be at 7 p.m., Feb. 21, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium. Mack-Arthur Turner, a native of Tupelo and a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law will be the speaker for the Tupelo Campus program. He began his academic career at ICC, where he received his GED certificate. Turner then enrolled as a full-time student and earned his associate’s degree in English with special honors. During his time at ICC, Turner served as president of the Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa. He contributed to the Chieftain staff, both as a journalist and a photographer. Donald A. Baker Scholarship

When Don Baker of Amory celebrated a milestone birthday, his family and friends presented a special gift to Itawamba Community College, which will benefit students for years to come. The gift was the Donald A. Baker Endowed Scholarship, which also recognized his 30 years of service to the College. That service includes more than 20 years as a member of the ICC Board of Trustees and more than 25 years as a member of the Foundation Board. “My sister, Beth, and I had no trouble getting participation from friends and family,” said Baker’s son, also named Don. “Everyone knows how much Daddy loves ICC! More than 80 friends and family members contributed to help endow the scholarship.” Full-time students from Monroe County who have financial need and who demonstrate potential for success in college are eligible to apply for the half-tuition scholarship. Baker, who was named ICC’s Alumnus of the Year in 1988, attended IJC, where he majored in commerce, from 1954-56. President announces retirement plan

Itawamba Community College President Mike Eaton has announced that he plans to retire June 30, ending a 43-year career that has included several leadership positions as well as head football coach.             He notified the College’s Board of Trustees at its January meeting.             “After prayerful consideration over the last six months, I felt it was time to pass the torch to new leadership,” Eaton said. “I have had a wonderful 43 years at the College (21 of those years I lived on campus) and have been greatly blessed. It has been an honor and privilege to serve in various roles throughout my career. I have enjoyed the challenge of being ICC’s President. When you are blessed with such an outstanding, dedicated faculty and staff and Board of Trustees, it makes the job of being the president much easier.”             Eaton became the sixth President of ICC on July 1, 2013. Swanson set for SOFIA flight

Bob Swanson of Tupelo, astronomy instructor at Itawamba Community College, will participate in one of NASA’s 11 educator teams for its Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors program and will fly on its Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, Mar. 5-11. During that week, his team will make at least two and possibly three research flights, each lasting about 12 hours. As part of his role as an Airborne Astronomy Ambassador, Swanson said that he is to do public outreach for the SOFIA program. He has recently released a song to iTunes, “Infra-Ready (Set to Go!),” to commemorate the opportunity. In his spare time, Swanson writes and records children’s music about weather (Stormin’ Bob Swanson, the Singing Weatherman) and gives science presentations to local schools, libraries and community groups. “To make my outreach as effective as possible, I try to bring all my talents to bear, including my passion for music and songwriting,” he said.
