Summer Institute for Educators

Registration is underway for Itawamba Community College’s Summer Institute for Educators 2017, which is scheduled for June 5-9, at the Belden Center. Sessions are from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The Monday session is free, including .6 continuing education units. The Tuesday-Friday workshops are $15 per day and include .6 CEUs. Topics and presenters include June 5 – “Dollars and Sense – Integrating financial literacy, math, language arts, music and social studies,” Jeannette N. Bennett, economic education specialist, St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank; June 6 – “Reading/Student Engagement and Instructional Strategies,” Brandi Blackley, assistant principal, Covington High School, Tipton County (Tenn.) ICC program receives $12,500 grant

Itawamba Community College’s Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology program has received a $12,500 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation. The check was presented recently during the Haas Technical Education Center’s Mississippi Regional Conference at Jones County Junior College. According to Barry Emison, ICC’s dean of Career and Technical Instruction, the funds will be used for student aid and certifications. “We appreciate very much the investment by the Haas Foundation in ICC’s Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology program,” Emison said. “Not only is it an investment in the program, but it is an investment in the futures of our students.” In 1999, Gene Haas formed the foundation which bears his name because he grew up with a strong social conscience instilled by his family. It was initially designed to fund the needs of the local community. Haas Automation is now a billion dollar company. The focus of the foundation has shifted to the current outreach and methodology. Its purpose is to introduce students to careers in machine technology and manufacturing, to build skills in the machining industry and to help military veterans enroll ...

Nursing alumni part of Baptist Medical Center staff awarded recognition

Four Itawamba Community College alumni are members of the nursing staff at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, which recently received the nation’s top honor for nursing excellence. The Magnet® designation is granted by the credentialing center of the American Nurses Association and considered worldwide as the ‘ultimate seal of quality.’             They include LaShanda Randle, Amy Franklin, Leasa Shorter and Judith Lowe.             Only seven percent of hospitals in America have earned Magnet, recognition. Baptist is the only hospital in Mississippi to receive this designation.

Orientation online registration begins May 1

Online registration will begin May 1 for summer freshman orientation sessions at Itawamba Community College.             Both morning (8-11:45 a.m.) and afternoon (1-4:45 p.m.) sessions are scheduled for June 12, 13, 14 and July 10 at the David C. Cole Student Services Building at the Fulton Campus and June 16 and July 13 at the Health Science Education Center at the Tupelo Campus. Morning-only sessions will be July 11 at the Fulton Campus and July 14 at the Tupelo Campus.             The schedule includes small group sessions, campus tours, computer training and registration. ID and yearbook photos will also be made.             A special parent/guest orientation will cover topics of special interest to enable them to assist their students in the transition to ICC.             Students must have submitted an application for admission as well as a copy of the ACT score before registering for orientation. In addition, they should register for the orientation session at the campus where they plan to attend and should sign up as soon as possible since only a maximum number can attend each session.             To register, students ...

Commencement ceremonies set for May 13

Approximately 600 students will participate in two commencement ceremonies, which are scheduled for May 13 in the Davis Event Center at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. Ceremony times include Associate of Arts, 11 a.m., and Associate of Applied Science, 3 p.m. Speakers for the ceremonies will be Glenn McCullough Jr., executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority, A.A.; and Juanita Gambrell Floyd, vice president of finance and administration for the CREATE Foundation, A.A.S. Appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant to lead the MDA on June 8, 2015, McCullough is a former chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority (2001-2005), former director of the Appalachian Regional Commission (1993-97) and former mayor of Tupelo. He was first nominated to the TVA board by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1999.  During his tenure with TVA, the utility earned national recognition for its economic development efforts and launched its megasite program. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi is located on a TVA megasite. Chris Cox recipient of faculty award

Itawamba Community College mathematics instructor Chris Cox of Tupelo is the beneficiary of a new award for an outstanding faculty member, thanks to the generosity of John and Beth Cleveland, Fulton natives, who now reside in Kingwood, Tex.             The award was presented to Cox Tuesday night during the College’s An Evening of Celebration: Honoring Academic Excellence Across the Curriculum at the Fulton Campus.             Criteria for selection for the John and Beth Cleveland Excellence in Education Outstanding Faculty award include full-time faculty; outstanding teaching, coaching, guidance; and unselfish dedication to students and the College. Additional criteria may include publications, grant writing; club and student activities involvement; contributions to the College through committees, special projects, volunteerism, etc.; service to the community as a representative of the College and art exhibitions, concerts and public performances.             Cox has been a mathematics instructor at ICC since August 2011. Previously he was a teacher and baseball coach at New Albany High School. Swanson is MSVCC Instructor of the Year

Bob Swanson of Tupelo, astronomy instructor at Itawamba Community College, has been named Mississippi Virtual Community College Instructor of the Year. “While I’m still a bit incredulous, the fact that I was selected out of so many worthy candidates somehow validates my online teaching mantra – that online students deserve a learning experience that is as similar as possible to the one received by their traditional, face-to-face counterparts,” Swanson said. “Thankfully, with today’s technology supported by the vision and know-how of ICC’s eLearning and TIS departments, this goal can largely be achieved.” The voting committee cited Swanson’s significant use of multi-media by adding and recording videos as something that sets his class apart, according to Denise Gillespie, dean of eLearning. Hall of Fame includes 12 sophomores

Twelve Itawamba Community College sophomores have been selected as members of the prestigious Hall of Fame for 2016-17. They include Scott Dunahue, Serenity Hawkins, both of Saltillo; Jennifer Finnie of Nettleton; Margaret Hatcher, Taylor Kelley, Allysa Lipsey, Noah Tackitt, all of Pontotoc; Robert Lampkin of Hamilton; Taylor McKnight of Ecru; Adrian Moffett, Jared Shields, both of Becker; and Rita “Nicole” Sumerel of Mooreville. Dunahue is majoring in nursing at ICC, where he is a Dean’s List scholar and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. He is married to Laken Dunahue and is the son of Donald and Lynn Dunahue. A practical nursing major at ICC, Finnie is a Dean’s List scholar. She is the daughter of Jonie Gilbert and Johnny Foy and is married to Kenneth Finnie. Hatcher is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Modern Foreign Language Club and the Baptist Student Union. Her honors include Communications Division award and a President’s List scholar.
