Itawamba Community College joins national initiative on College Cost Transparency Itawamba Community College has joined the College Cost Transparency Initiative, a coalition of more than 360 higher education institutions that have voluntarily committed to follow a set of principles and standards that ensure transparency, clarity and understanding around student financial aid offers, which was announced this week. Together, these institutions serve more than 3.5 million college students in the United States. “Choosing to attend college is one of the most significant financial aid decisions a student or family can make,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “Knowing how much it will cost up front is crucial, and ICC is committed to providing students clear and accurate financial information. Apply NOW for free welding class made possible by Metallica's foundation, All Within My Hands A free class in welding, which begins at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center, Oct. 11, is possible due to a grant this summer from Metallica’s foundation, All Within My Hands. The class will meet for one eight-week term, and the curriculum includes introduction to welding I and introduction to STEM. During the second phase, which begins Jan. 8, the students will take shielded metal arc welding and two fully-online classes in entrepreneurship and principles of marketing. Among the schools, which applied for the grant, ICC was selected from a competitive pool of applicants to receive $100,000 to transform the futures of students in the community. ICC leads state in full-time enrollment increase Itawamba Community College ranks first in the state in full-time enrollment increase and in the top three in overall enrollment increase, according to figures recently released by the Mississippi Community College Board. With fall enrollment at 5,034 at the end of the 10-day reporting period, figures from fall 22 to fall 23 show an 8.5 percent increase. Chandler, Lyons receive MAMA scholarships With the announcement of Mississippi Automotive Manufacturers Association's 2023-24 Scholarship Recipients, MAMA's scholarship fund that has supported 205 students enrolled in Mississippi community colleges and universities reached a total of $407,500 awarded since 2006. Selected from Itawamba Community College include Quen'Darrius "Que" Chandler and Julius Lyons, both of Houston, sophomores in Industrial Maintenance and participants in the Advanced Manufacturing Technician program at Toyota Mississippi. Chandler wrote in his essay, "I am currently working at the Toyota plant in Blue Springs, where I am experiencing real-world maintenance training. ICC schedules Preparing for the ACT sessions The Itawamba Community College Continuing Education Department has scheduled several sessions for Preparing for the ACT during the 2023 fall semester. All meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Math and science sessions include Oct. 21 and Dec. 2. English and reading are offered Oct. 14 and Nov. 18. ICC’s ACT prep instructors use three intensive classroom review methods in English, reading, science reasoning and math that focus on strategies for improving test-day performance and scores. Those methods include a review of all concepts tested, tips for overcoming test anxiety and guides for “studying smart.” Those who are enrolled have an opportunity to pre-test early and post-test later in the class using full-length ACT practice tests to measure performance and practice for the testing dates. Students must bring their books to all sessions. The cost is $50 per session. Preregistration is required. ICC's Sept. 28 Fall Preview Day designed for high school seniors High school seniors will have an opportunity to learn about Itawamba Community College during its Fall Preview Day, which is scheduled for September 28 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. at the Fulton Campus. Fall Preview Day attendees will also have free admission for the ICC/Northwest football game at Eaton Field, beginning with a tailgate at 5:30 p.m. They can select from up to two information sessions about ICC’s schools of academics, health science and career education, and participants will hear directly from faculty within the areas. They can choose which schools to attend based on a selected major through the registration link. Attendees will also receive information on involvement at ICC, financial aid/scholarships, housing and residence life, Phi Theta Kappa and honors. Student recruiters will lead the campus and residence hall tours during this event. Registration now open for ICC Practical Nursing program Registration is now open for Itawamba Community College’s Practical Nursing program, which begins in January 2024. Practical Nursing is a three-semester program. Upon completion, the graduate will receive a certificate and will be eligible to take the N-CLEX (national board exam) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Those who start the program in the spring are expected to graduate in December. Prerequisites include Anatomy and Physiology I and II with a ‘C’ or above and an ACT score of at least 16 as well as completion of an Itawamba Community College application for admission. ICC to enroll new adult education students during two Sept. 11 sessions Itawamba Community College will enroll new adult education students at the Belden Center during two sessions on Sept. 11. The first, which is at 9 a.m., will be for individuals who are 18 and older; and the second, at 1 p.m., will include those who are 16-/17-years-old. Participants must have a photo ID, and 16-/17-year-olds should be accompanied by a parent or guardian and bring a withdrawal form from the most recent school attended. Entry into the adult education area is across from the WIN Job Center at ICC-Belden. Day and evening classes are offered at ICC-Belden as well as in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. There is no cost for the classes. The ESL program, Belden Center evening courses and all WIN Job Centers offer open, continuous enrollment.
