ICC formally opens mobile planetarium Officials from the Tennessee Valley Authority joined Itawamba Community College representatives for a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the grand opening of its planetarium, Apr. 10 at the Fulton Campus. The planetarium is currently located in the John S. Crubaugh Education Building, but plans are being developed to make it more mobile, according to Heather McCormick, mathematics division chair and one of three STEM sponsors, who are leading the project. “We are extremely grateful to TVA for their generous donations which have made the planetarium possible,” McCormick said. “In addition, TVA’s generosity has given our students research and leadership opportunities as they prepared the narration for the planetarium shows. Application deadline approaches for ICC health science programs Itawamba Community College’s School of Health Science programs are designed to prepare individuals for employment in the healthcare field, and the application deadline for fall 2025 is rapidly approaching for 10 of the 11 programs. Students interested in ICC’s Associate Degree Nursing, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Health Information Technology, Occupational Therapy Assistant Technology, Physical Therapist Assistant Technology, Practical Nursing, Public Health Technology, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Care Technology and Surgical Technology must submit their online application and meet the requirements by May 1. ICC students join national OTA celebration; commemorate their profession As the nation celebrates Occupational Therapy Month in April, students in Itawamba Community College’s OTA program will also commemorate their profession, especially Rodney Hardy, who is on track to graduate in May. “This has been by far one of the most challenging, yet best experiences of my life,” he noted. Here’s his story… Back in 2014, when he was a nursing student at ICC, Hardy left class, got caught in a bad snow/ice storm, hit a patch of ice, and his car slid, fish tailed and flipped five times. He thought he was stuck between the steering wheel and dashboard, but the car had crushed his left leg. He calls one of his classmates his guardian angel because she noticed that he was no longer following behind her. “Something kept telling her to turn around and thankfully she listened and found me. ICC Fashion Tribe spring show set for Apr. 16 Itawamba Community College’s Fashion Tribe will present its spring show, Apr. 16 at 7 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. More than 65 models will be featured in “Soundtrack to Style,” which will highlight various styles of music across different genres and musical eras. Fashion Tribe provides opportunities for ICC’s students to pursue fashion on multiple levels, including modeling, production, design, lighting, backstage management, photography, music, hairstyling and makeup artistry. Seven ICC sophomores named to All-Mississippi Teams Seven Itawamba Community College sophomores have been named to the All-Mississippi teams, including both workforce and transfer. They include Landon Brown of Fulton, Braiden Holcombe of Vina, Ala., Yazmeen Alwaisi and Allyson Johnson, both of Tupelo, All-Mississippi Transfer; Cole Richardson of Iuka, Jared Martin of New Albany and Jaden Willis of Saltillo, All-Mississippi Workforce. Alwaisi, who is a Middle College participant, will graduate from both Tupelo High School and ICC this spring. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Student Government Association at ICC, and her other activities include the North East Mississippi Youth Foundation. Alwaisi plans to transfer to the University of Mississippi where she will double major in economics and political science and subsequently to attend law school. Her parents are Zamzam Almulaiki and Norman Alwaisi. Brown is a member of the STEM Club and vice president of Projects for Phi Theta Kappa. His honors include the President’s List. ICC Chop Day '25 offers football, fun and food opportunities Chop Day ’25, which is scheduled for Apr. 24 at Itawamba Community College, will not only preview the Indians fall football season but also provide an opportunity for both students and the community to participate in fun events and sample some tasty food at the Fulton Campus. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., food trucks, including Korny Dog, Crawfish Commander and Just Chillin’ Ice Cream, will be available beside the Crane Pavilion. The gate for the football scrimmage opens at 6 p.m. at Butch Lambert Stadium with a free kid zone. Concessions and Chick-fil-A food options will also be open. All food during both day and evening activities is available for purchase. They include Jalynn Black of McCool, third place in Short Stories for “The Voice That Wouldn’t Fade;” Sharlee Shumpert of Mooreville, third place in Poetry for “I Am Ambitious” and Sara Davis of Smithville, second place in Poetry for “Preacher Man.” In addition, ICC’s literary magazine, The Calliope, placed second. ICC's Public Health Technology program joins in Apr. 7-13 national celebration Itawamba Community College’s Public Health Technology program will join those in the profession in celebrating April 7-13 as National Public Health Week. According to program director Cassie Alexander, the theme is “It Starts Here.” She said the commemoration recognizes the contributions of public health in improving the physical condition of the people of the United States and for ICC’s nationally-recognized Public Health Technology program, the residents of Mississippi, specifically those in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties; and achieving health equity. “Public health starts with each of us making a difference in our homes and communities,” Alexander said in summarizing the information provided by the American Public Health Association. “It’s how the places we live, work and play affect our well-being. ICC schedules multiple orientation sessions beginning Apr. 9 Itawamba Community College has scheduled orientation sessions for students who plan to enroll for the 2025 summer and fall semesters. Recent high school graduates are required to participate in one of the sessions, which are scheduled for Apr. 9 (Honors), June 10, June 11, July 16, all at 1 p.m. at the Fulton Campus; Apr. 25, June 10, June 11 and July 16, all at 8:30 a.m., at the Fulton Campus; and June 12 and July 15, both at 1 p.m. at the Tupelo Campus. Students can attend a session regardless of the location they plan to attend.
