ICC Small Ensembles to perform Nov. 3

Itawamba Community College’s Small Ensembles will perform in concert at 7 p.m., Nov. 3, in the W.O. McArthur to present fifth in 'Reflecting Mississippi Series' at ICC-Fulton, Nov. 7

Danny McArthur of Tupelo, environmental justice reporter, will present “A Conversation about Southern Journalism,” Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in the W. O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus.             McArthur, who is employed by the Gulf States Newsroom, a regional collaboration among NPR and public radio stations in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, focuses on individuals most vulnerable to climate change’s effects and the communities disproportionately impacted by environmental hazards and poor public policy. A graduate of the University of Georgia, McArthur previously spent three years as the community voices reporter for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.             The presentation is part of “Reflecting Mississippi: Finding Yourself in Mississippi’s Reflection,” made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council. Additional presentations are scheduled throughout 2022-23.

ICC schedules registration opportunity, orientation sessions beginning in November

Adult learners, transfer students and those who are being readmitted can register for the 2023 spring semester at Itawamba Community College beginning Nov. 16. December 22 high school graduates will have an opportunity to register during special orientation sessions, Nov. 17 and Dec. 8, at 1 p.m., at the Tupelo Campus.             “Orientation for December graduates is a valuable first step toward a successful college career, and ICC offers it at no cost to provide the best start for our students,” said Michael Holloway, director of recruitment and orientation. It is an opportunity for students to learn about ICC, schedule their classes, take their ID photo and begin to prepare for the college transition. Nov. 1 deadline to apply for ICC spring 2023 Practical Nursing class

Nov. 1 is the deadline to apply for Itawamba Community College’s Practical Nursing class, which will begin Jan. 9.             Practical Nursing is a one-year (three-semester) program. ICC to host Summer of Science presentation, Oct. 27

Itawamba Community College will host a Summer of Science presentation, Oct. 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the David C. Cole Student Services Building at the Fulton Campus.             The presentation is the culmination of a research project between ICC and Brown University. Funding for this project was made possible by Brown University and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.             Dr. Erica Walker, assistant professor of epidemiology at the Brown University School of Public Health, will be a special guest. She has extensive experience with both environmental exposure assessments and modeling, community surveying and community engagement, focusing on air, noise, visual and water pollution. She practices storm chasing science, which she defines as directing her resources and attention to areas that are typically overlooked. Her credentials include the bachelor’s degree from Simmons University, master’s degree from Tufts University and doctorate from Harvard T.H. Registration continues for four-week eLearning classes

Registration for a four-week eLearning session is continuing at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses of Itawamba Community College.             Classes begin on November 14, which is the registration deadline.             ICC offers academic, career education, workforce and eLearning classes. ICC Food Service Pathway class to begin Oct. 24

            Itawamba Community College has scheduled a Food Service Pathway class at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) beginning Oct. 24.             The class will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. through Nov. 18.             The program includes Serve Safe® Food Manager Certification, Serve Safe® Alcohol Certification, CPR, certificate of completion, proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices, culinary techniques, interview skills and résumé building, money handling and front of the house and back of the house operations. ICC schedules Fall Preview Day, Oct. 27

High school seniors will have an opportunity to learn about Itawamba Community College during its Fall Preview Day, which is scheduled for October 27 from 2-5:30 p.m. at the Fulton Campus.             Fall Preview Day attendees will also have free admission for the ICC/Coahoma football game at Eaton Field, beginning at 6:30 p.m.             The opportunity will include sessions about ICC’s schools of academics, health science and career education, and participants will hear directly from faculty within the areas, according to Michael Holloway, director of recruitment and orientation. They can choose which school to attend based on a selected major through the registration link. Attendees will also receive information on involvement at ICC, financial aid, Phi Theta Kappa, honors, housing and supplemental instruction. Student recruiters will lead campus and residence hall tours.             Preregistration at www.iccms.edu/PreviewDays is required, and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrants are allowed to bring only one parent or guardian. Brown, Smith to present fourth in 'Reflecting Mississippi' series at ICC-Fulton, Oct. 18

Dr. Alan Brown, professor of English at the University of West Alabama, and Sihya Smith, assistant curator at the Oren Dunn City Museum in Tupelo, will present “Haunted History: How Ghost Stories Reflect Mississippi’s Identity,” Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in the W. O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus.             Since he began at UWA, Brown has developed an abiding interest in Southern folklore, which culminated in 29 books. For the past three decades, his focus has been on Southern ghost lore and on African American culture and music. Also, his interest in Southern folklore has manifested itself in several collections of Southern ghost stories. He has investigated numerous haunted sites, including the Artist’s House in Key West, Fla., Miss Molly’s Bed and Breakfast in Fort Worth, Tex., King’s Tavern in Natchez, the Waverly Hills Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Louisville, Ky. and the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Ark.
