ICC's PTK chapters win regional awards

            Both the Beta Tau Sigma and Upsilon Sigma chapters of Phi Theta Kappa at Itawamba Community College received awards at the organization’s Mississippi/Louisiana Regional Conference, Mar. 1-2, at Mississippi State University.             Beta Tau Sigma’s recognition include Nathan Kwasinski of Tupelo, Golden Key recipient; advisors Jenny Bowers and Betsy White, both of Tupelo, Horizon award, and Five-Star Chapter. Bowers was also runner-up for Distinguished Chapter Advisor.             Awards presented to Upsilon Sigma are Regional Officer position, reporter; Distinguished Scrapbook award; runner up for advisor team including Amber King of Tupelo, Jay Humphries of Vina, Ala., Heather McCormick of Fulton and Robin Lowe of Amory, all of whom received Horizon awards; Five-Star Chapter; and Makaela Dickerson of Smithville, runner-up for Distinguished Chapter Officer and Golden Key recipient. Humphries also was runner-up for the Paragon award.             Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for the two-year college. Bunch, Buskirk elected Mr. and Miss ICC for 2018-19

            Russell Bunch of Saltillo and Laura Buskirk of Amory have been elected Mr. and Miss Itawamba Community College for 2018-19.             Bunch is majoring in pre-medicine at ICC, where he is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and third baseman for the Indians baseball team. His honors include Phi Theta Kappa and president’s and dean’s lists. Bunch was also selected to the Tupelo 49ers Senior Legion 19u Baseball Team, which earned a state championship. He is a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church (Vacation Bible School Fitness volunteer, Bible Drill Superior winner for three years and student group). His community service activities are volunteer for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Crossroads Ranch, Celebration Village and a reader for ICC’s Earl Childhood Center. He is the son of Will and Jan Reid Bunch.             Buskirk is majoring in elementary education at ICC where she is a member of the Indian Delegation, Future Educators Association and Baptist Student Union, Student Government Association secretary and orientation leader. ICC selects 2018-19 Hall of Fame

           Twelve Itawamba Community College sophomores have been selected as members of the prestigious Hall of Fame for 2018-19.             They include Jake Kirkpatrick of Aberdeen; Laura Buskirk of Amory; Matthew Burrows of Dorsey; Brandon Adair, Reagan Newton, both of Guntown; Carter Wood of Mantachie; Ben Seay of Mooreville; Nikki Bullock of New Albany; Makaela Dickerson of Smithville; Gregory Parker Anderson, Karlee Avery and Anna John Hand, all of Tupelo.             Adair is majoring in business marketing at ICC where he is a member of the Indian Delegation and student worker. His honors include president of the Beta Tau Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and vice president of the Tupelo Campus Student Government Association. Adair is also a youth group member and leader for The Loft youth group at Anchor Holds in Blue Springs. His parents are Mary Adair and Mike and Daphne Adair.             Anderson is vice president of the Computer Programming and Networking Association at ICC. His honors include dean’s list. ICC joins in MACJC effort for legislative support

JACKSON- In an effort to get the Mississippi Legislature’s attention, community college presidents, faculty and students reminded everyone at a Capitol building press conference Feb. 27 that community/junior colleges provide a vast array of educational and economic opportunities for everyone.             “The annual MACJC Capitol Day is an opportunity for the 15 community colleges to have a unified voice since we are all working toward the same goal, which is to provide quality instruction while preparing students for successful futures,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen.              Additionally, the two-year college system also provides a healthy return on every dollar spent on the nation’s oldest community college system. MACJC Legislative co-chair and Jones College President Dr. Jesse Smith encouraged legislators to “face the facts.”            “For every dollar invested in the community college system, the return on the investment is four-dollars and eighty-six cents.  That’s a worthwhile investment if you’re just talking about an investment but what about the people?” asked Smith.               Long lists of facts were shared with the crowd, like ...

ICC art students receive six awards at state competition

            Itawamba Community College’s art students have received awards for work they submitted in the 2019 MC/JCAIA (state community college competition) hosted by Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson.             They include Oscar Gonzalez of Ecru, second place in 2D design for “Phoenix,” first place in drawing for “Naomi” and second place in 3D design for “Golden Guitar;” Taylor Cash of Belmont, honorable mention in 2D design for “Ghostlight;” Tyler Griffin of Tupelo, honorable mention in 3D design for “Stale;” and Madelyn “Charlie” Weeks of Winfield, Ala., honorable mention in painting for “Blue Haze.”             They will be honored at a reception and awards ceremony at Copiah-Lincoln Community College at noon, Mar. 22.             Additional students whose work was selected to represent ICC include Theo Lyle of Amory; Ireland McDowell, Taylor Lentz, both of Fulton; Jasmine Raden of Tupelo; Lena Blanton of Comanche, Okla. and Nancy Garcia-Martinez of Pontotoc.             ICC’s six awards were the second largest total among the 12 community college participants.             The works of Itawamba Community College’s art students will be on display in the W.O. ICC President Allen to receive prestigious Paragon Award

            Itawamba Community College President Dr. Jay Allen has been selected as a recipient of Phi Theta Kappa’s Paragon Award for New Presidents.             The awards are given to new college presidents who have shown strong support of student success by recognizing academic achievement, leadership and service among high-achieving students at their college. Recipients were nominated by students on their campus.             “It is an honor to be nominated by our students for this award,” Allen said. “It is most rewarding to watch students succeed as they grow in leadership and academics during their participation in the PTK organization.”             Allen became ICC’s seventh president on July 1, 2017 after serving as president and chief executive officer of Hopkinsville Community College in Kentucky since January 2014. A native Mississippian, he has served in several leadership positions at Hinds Community College and as a senior-level administrator for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College – Perkinston and the George County Center – for a combined total of 23 years. ICC to conduct mock safety training exercises at Fulton, Tupelo

            Itawamba Community College will conduct mock safety training exercises in coordination with local law enforcement agencies at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses, Feb. 18.             The Fulton Campus event will be from 8-11:30 a.m. at the Boggs Humanities Building, and the Tupelo Campus drill from 12:30-3 p.m. at the Student Support Center.             “This will be a test of our emergency preparedness procedures at these locations just as we did recently at the ICC Belden Center,” said Dr. Brad Boggs, dean of students. “The normal operation of the facilities will not be disrupted since classes won’t meet on Feb. 18 due to Presidents’ Day.”             The event is only a training exercise which will involve the majority of ICC’s faculty and staff at all locations. “This will provide local law enforcement, emergency responders and the College an opportunity to work together in the event of an incident.
