Food Service Pathway class set for Nov. 12

            Itawamba Community College has scheduled a four-week Food Service Pathway class at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) beginning Nov. 12.             Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. through Dec. 14.             The program includes Serve Safe® certification, certificate of completion, proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices, culinary techniques, interview skills and résumé building, money handling and front of the house and back of the house operations.             The class is offered in partnership with Families First of Mississippi.             For more information or to register, contact program director Christy Scheuer at acscheuer@iccms.edu or (662) 407-1505.

Nov. 1 deadline for Jan. PN class applications

Nov. 1 is the deadline for application for a practical nursing class beginning in January 2019 at Itawamba Community College. Upon completion of the 12-month (three semester) program, the graduate will receive a certificate and will be eligible to take the N-CLEX (national board exam) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Licensed practical nurses work under the direction of registered nurses and physicians. They provide direct patient care including treatments and medication delivery in nursing homes, extended care facilities, hospitals, physician’s offices, schools and private homes. ICC's Pannell elected MGS president

Laura Pannell, PhD., C.P.G., lead eLearning faculty for psychology and social work at Itawamba Community College, has been elected to serve as 2019-21 president of The Mississippi Gerontological Society. A resident of New Albany, Pannell is a nationally-credentialed gerontologist and a certified trainer with the State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Academies. Among her professional memberships are North Mississippi State Hospital Human Rights Advocacy committee, Alzheimer’s Planning Council for the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, past president of the ICC-Tupelo/Belden Faculty Association, Mississippi Caregiver Coalition, American Association of Christian Counselors and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Women Educators. Her honors include the NEWMS Women of Distinction award (2015), Mississippi Humanities Council 2015 Teacher Award, HEADWAE award recipient, NISOD Award of Excellence, ICC Award of Excellence, Meritorious Achievement (ICC), Lamplighter and past Leadership Mississippi. Her current service includes church – Women’s Conference co-chair, substitute Sunday School teacher; New Century Club; volunteer advocate for older adults and families; Christmas Adopt an Elder program; Friends of North Mississippi State Hospital and founding and current planning council for the North Mississippi Alzheimer’s conference (nine years). ...

Completion bonus available for high school equivalency credential at ICC between now and Dec.14

            Those who need to earn a high school equivalency credential (GED or HiSET) can do so at Itawamba Community College between now and Dec. 14 and receive a $100 completion bonus.             Classes are available through the ICC Adult Education program in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties.             Those who are interested can call 662.407.1538.

ICC PMMT program receives $16,000 Haas Foundation grant

            Itawamba Community College’s Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology program has received a $16,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation.             According to Barry Emison, ICC’s dean of Career and Technical Instruction, the funds will be used for student aid and certifications. “We appreciate very much the investment by the Haas Foundation in ICC’s Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology program,” Emison said. “Not only is it an investment in the program, but it is an investment in the futures of our students.”             In 1999, Gene Haas formed the foundation which bears his name because he grew up with a strong social conscience instilled by his family. It was initially designed to fund the needs of the local community. Haas Automation is now a billion dollar company. The focus of the foundation has shifted to the current outreach and methodology. Its purpose is to introduce students to careers in machine technology and manufacturing, to build skills in the machining industry and to help military veterans enroll in programs that train them to become skilled machinists.             ICC’s ...

            Registration for a four-week eLearning session is continuing at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses of Itawamba Community College.             Classes begin on Nov. 12, which is the registration deadline.             ICC offers academic, career and technical, workforce and eLearning classes. MCCB awards $774,000 challenge grant to ICC

            Itawamba Community College has been awarded a 2019 Career and Technical Education Challenge grant for $774,000 from the Mississippi Community College Board for the implementation of a Heavy Equipment Technology program.             According to Dean of Career and Technical Instruction Barry Emison, the grant will be utilized to purchase equipment and training aids for its Diesel Equipment Technology program. “The grant will enhance that program and add capabilities in the heavy equipment area,” Emison said. “We are addressing a significant skills gap in that industry.”             Emison said that the grant proposal was the result of a request from heavy equipment industries in Northeast Mississippi to provide skilled graduates for future employment in exchange for collaboration with ICC to develop a heavy equipment maintenance option to the existing Diesel Equipment Technology program. “Itawamba Community College takes pride in having excellent industry partnerships,” he noted. ICC's Bland says launch of new ED mobile app to positively impact district visits immediately

            In an attempt to make the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process more “positive, engaging and user-friendly,” the United States Department of Education has launched its first mobile app for iOS and Android devices this week.             The new app will allow students and parents to complete and submit the application for Federal Student Aid (Pell Grants, Supplemental Grants, Student Loans and Federal Work-Study) as well as import their tax documents to speed up the approval process.             According to Itawamba Community College Director of Financial Aid Terry Bland, “The increased flexibility afforded by the myStudentAid app will come in handy as we head out to various FAFSA Completion events to be held within our district high schools over the next month. It’s exciting to see that the Department of Education finally realizes that while not everyone in rural areas has Internet access, most have cell phones and could benefit from the expanded accessibility provided by the new app.”             ICC’s district includes Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties.             For more information, contact ...

ICC receives $30,000 Women's Foundation of Mississippi grant

            Itawamba Community College has received a $30,000 grant from the Women’s Foundation of Mississippi for implementation of its Women Advancing Generational Employment and Success program.             The grant, which will continue through Sept. 30, 2019, will provide supplementary resources to help disadvantaged women with children to advance their education and attain sustainable wage jobs through barrier mitigation, according to Lee Oswalt, director of the SNAP/E&T pilot grant, who will administer W.A.G.E.S.             ICC will leverage resources through braiding funding streams, enabling the College to provide maximum assistance through the provision of customized and individualized training services. Many of the target population may not have completed high school.             “The program will cover such barriers as tuition, drivers’ licenses, transportation and childcare,” Oswalt said.  “We want to be part of the solution by providing another option to leverage resources for students.” Among the additional funds that will be used are Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Incentive2Success, Mississippi Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training Program and adult education private funds.             ICC’s program will target Lee County low-income women, ages ...

ICC schedules Junior Preview Day, Oct. 25

            Area high school juniors and their parents are invited to participate in a special event at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus, Oct. 25.             Junior Preview Day, which will begin with registration at the Davis Event Center from 3-3:30 p.m., is designed for current high school juniors and their parents or guardians to receive valuable information to assist in the decision-making process of after high school choices.             Highlights of the event will include meetings with areas of interest, tour of the campus and residence halls, free dinner and the ICC vs. Northwest football game.             Areas to be showcased are financial aid, scholarships, admissions, Honors program, academic programs, health professions, career and technical education programs and housing.             Registration is available at http://www.iccms.edu/JuniorPreview.             For more information, contact Marty Cooper, director of recruiting, at pmcooper@iccms.edu or (662) 862-8252.
