WalletHub ranks ICC Best Community College in Mississippi for 2018

            Itawamba Community College has been ranked the Best Community College in Mississippi for 2018 by WalletHub.             In order to determine the best community colleges in the nation, WalletHub selected a sample of 715 schools from the list of member institutions in the American Association of Community Colleges. The schools were evaluated on the basis of cost and financing as well as both education and career outcomes.             According to WalletHub, “Community colleges offer students the ability to get higher education without having as much financial strain. During the 2017-18 academic year, tuition and fees for full-time, in-state enrollment at a public two-year college averaged $3,750 per year.” ICC’s yearly tuition and fees are $3,160.             In addition, WalletHub notes that other than serving as affordable, “community colleges often provide more flexible schedules, smaller class sizes and rigorous coursework…These qualities appeal especially to students who need to balance their studies with other commitments, such as family and work.”             “Providing affordable and accessible education is a significant component of Itawamba Community College’s mission,” said ICC President Dr. ...

ICC exhibit features work of Tupelo's Armas

            “In Search of (Im)possibilities: Persistence,” which features the colorful, symbolic and expressionistic paintings of Eyevan Armas of Tupelo, is currently on display in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center gallery at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus.             Armas, a self-taught, 29-year-old artist originally from Guadalajara, has been featured in countless underground “Secret Art Shows” in his hometown, and recently he had a month-long exhibit at ‘The Shop Downtown’ in Hattiesburg. His paintings have been displayed at locally-owned businesses such as Vanelli’s, Gabriel’s and the Thirsty Devil. Some of his biggest accomplishments include being published not only in DIME magazine but also as the illustrator of “The Great Building” written by Voz Vanelli. MI-BEST open house set for Oct. 16

            Itawamba Community College will host a MI-BEST open house from 4-7 p.m., Oct. 16, at the Belden Conference Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.).             The MI-BEST program enables students to earn certifications and college credits while they are working on earning the high school equivalency credential.  Information will also be available on ICC’s MI-BEST pathway opportunities in Certified Nursing Assistant, Welding and Cutting Technology and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology.             “We hope to recruit MI-BEST students, bring awareness to the community and recruit students who can enroll into our adult education classes,” said Amanda Jane, adult education program coordinator and trainer.             Refreshments will be served, and t-shirts and backpacks will be given to all who attend.             For more information, call (662) 407-1518 or email alwilliams@iccms.edu.

2018-19 LDI

            Ten members of Itawamba Community College’s faculty and staff have been selected to participate in its Leadership Development Institute for 2018-19.             They include Jon Armstrong of Fulton, English instructor; Billy Carson of Saltillo, lead online instructor for business administration and director for the hospitality management program; Deanna Duckworth of Mantachie, adult education and adjunct English instructor; Dr. Melissa Haab of Louisville, dean of enrollment services; Jake Hartfield of Fulton, coordinator of student activities; Ira Lindsay Kinard Jones of Houston, mathematics instructor; Andy Kirk of Fulton, head softball coach and health, physical education and recreation instructor; Dr. Cass Patrick of Tupelo, fine arts division chair; Nina Strother of Fulton, director of community relations; and Tzer Nan (TZ) Waters of Tupelo, lead workforce trainer.             Armstrong, who has been a member of the ICC faculty since 2007, earned the associate’s degree from ICC, bachelor’s degree from the University of North Alabama and the master’s degree from Mississippi State University. ICC to honor Kline, Hill, Nanney during Homecoming, Oct. 18

            Itawamba Community College will honor Alumnus of the Year Tommy Kline of Fulton and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees Ron Hill of Ponte Vedra, Fla. and Mike Nanney Sr. of Fulton, during Homecoming activities, Oct. 18, at the Fulton Campus.             They will be recognized at an award ceremony at 4 p.m. tentatively scheduled for the Davis Event Center lobby as well as prior to the ICC vs. Southwest football game which begins at 6:30 p.m. at Eaton Field.             Aberdeen native Kline, the owner of Kline Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. which he founded in 1978, attended IJC on an athletic scholarship and played football for coaches Dudley Miller and Ben Jones. He earned a business degree at the Fulton Campus, and later he commuted two nights a week from Aberdeen for 18 months to complete the heating and air conditioning program. FAFSA Fridays begin Oct. 5

            Itawamba Community College’s Financial Aid offices have scheduled FAFSA Fridays beginning Oct. 5 to assist prospective students with the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.             ICC staff members will be available to assist with completion of the online form as well as to answer any questions at both the Fulton and Tupelo campus offices, which are located in the Student Services buildings. Students are encouraged to visit the Tupelo Campus office, if possible because of the availability of more computers. In addition to ICC staff, Phi Theta Kappa and Get2College Corps members Jacob Owens (Fulton Campus) and Blake Price (Tupelo Campus) will assist with FAFSA Fridays.             Thirty-minute appointments can be scheduled from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., weekdays, using SignUp.com at http://signup.com/go/nadZGME for the Fulton Campus and http://signup.com/go/WgcKppi for the Tupelo Campus.             The FAFSA is the form used by the U.S. Department of Education to determine eligibility for federal, state and college-sponsored financial aid, including grants, educational loans and work-study programs, according to Terry Bland, director of Financial Aid at ICC.             For more information, call (662) 862-8261 ...

Eight-week terms to begin in October

            Registration for eight week traditional and eLearning sessions is continuing at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses of Itawamba Community College.             The deadline to register is Oct. 12 for the traditional term and Oct. 16 for the eLearning (online) session.             ICC offers academic, career and technical, workforce and eLearning classes. State of the District Address

            Itawamba Community College will host a State of the District address featuring U.S. Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith and U.S. Representative Trent Kelly, at 1:30 p.m., Oct. 29, at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus.             The public is invited to the question-and-answer format event, which is sponsored by ICC’s Political Science Club.  Members of the community are encouraged to submit questions to constitutionday@iccms.edu using State of the District in the subject line. National Day on Writing set for Oct. 23

           High school students in Itawamba Community College’s five-county district are invited to submit writing, music and artwork, which will be judged for the National Day on Writing, Oct. 23.             Students in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee. Monroe and Pontotoc counties are invited to submit essays, poetry, short stories and artwork (drawing and painting) by the 4:30 p.m., Oct. 11 deadline. Awards, including first, second and third places, and honorable mention will be presented during a reception at 6:30 p.m. that day in the ICC-Fulton Learning Resource Center. The work will be displayed in ICC’s gallery in the W.O.
