ICC joins in National Truck Driver Appreciation Week; now recruiting students for upcoming classes

            Itawamba Community College is joining with the American Trucking Association in celebrating National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, Sept. 15-21.             The weeklong celebration honors the millions of professional truck drivers who deliver America’s freight safely and securely every day.             It is especially meaningful to Itawamba Community College, which is also celebrating its Commercial Truck Driving program that is now recruiting students for classes that will begin soon at its Tupelo Campus.             ICC’s CTD program prepares individuals to drive Class A semitrucks and other commercial vehicles. It includes instruction in operating diesel-powered vehicles, loading and unloading cargo, reporting delays or accidents on the road, verifying loads against shipping records and keeping necessary records. It is designed to give the future driver a complete and thorough understanding of logbooks, trip records and the motor carrier safety regulations of the United States Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.             Options include four weeks, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m., or 16-weeks.             Enrollment requirements include U.S. citizen or Puerto Rico valid driver’s license; copy of good ...

ICC schedules Dinner & Demo series

Itawamba Community College will sponsor a Dinner & Demo series, beginning with an already sold-out session, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. at Forklift in Tupelo with chef Cooper Miller.             Available sessions are scheduled for 6 p.m., October 9, at the ICC Belden Center with Foodsmith chef David Leathers and at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 16, at Park Heights with chef Dan Schroeder.             “The chefs at each location will provide a demonstration related to the dinner preparation, which will follow,” according to Josh Gammill, ICC director of Continuing Education, which is cosponsoring the series with the Food Management Certification pathway. “The three restaurants and their executive chefs have created a unique interactive experience for participants,” Gammill said.             Limited seating is available. Price per experience is $55 per person. ICC to formally open new softball/tennis complex, Sept. 18, 11 a.m. - public is invited

           The public is invited to celebrate the grand opening of Itawamba Community College’s new softball and tennis complex at the Fulton Campus, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m.             A ribbon cutting will open the 6,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility that includes locker rooms, laundry facilities and a small training area, all on the first floor; three separated rooms for scoring, announcer and the media and two large open decks at the top of the stadium with both chair back and bench seats on the second floor.             During the groundbreaking ceremony on March 7, 2023, ICC President Dr. Jay Allen said, “It’s not just going to be ANY softball and tennis complex. It’s going to be the BEST in the league. ICC All-American Heroes Night postponed until Sept. 26

Due to the possibility of inclement weather forecast for Thursday, September 12, Itawamba Community College’s All-American Heroes Night has been postponed until September 26, when the Indians play the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans. Both past and current members of the armed forces, first responders and healthcare professionals will be honored at halftime of the football game at Lambert Stadium/Eaton Field, which begins at 7 p.m. Also scheduled beginning at 4 p.m. include an Indian Spirit Walk and All-American Tailgate with free Touch-a-Truck, Kids’ Zone activities and tethered hot air balloon rides. ICC joins National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week celebration, Sept. 15-21

            Itawamba Community College’s Adult Education Department is celebrating September 15-21 as National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week.             ICC President Dr. Jay Allen kicked off the commemoration with the signing of a proclamation designating the nationwide event.             Additional activities will include Adult Education staff reading to students in both of ICC’s Early Learning Centers (Fulton and Tupelo) during the week.             “The goal of National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week is to work side-by-side in every state, territory and district to heighten public awareness, strengthen alliances, leverage resources and increase the number of people who understand the vital role adult education and family literacy play in our nation’s and state’s well-being,” according to Audra Perry, ICC director of Adult Education.             In signing the proclamation, Allen said that he “supports the goals and ideals of National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week and recognizes the efforts of ICC’s Adult Education Department and its instructors in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties and encourage the participation of all individuals to achieve a high ...

ICC to honor All-American Heroes, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. football game

Both past and current members of the armed forces, first responders and healthcare professionals will be honored during Itawamba Community College’s All-American Heroes Night, Sept. 12, at Lambert Stadium/Eaton Field at the Fulton Campus during ICC’s football game with East Central Community College, which begins at 7 p.m.             Special activities will include a salute during halftime featuring ICC’s All-American Marching Band and a magnificent fireworks display. Admission is free to all past and current armed forces members and healthcare professionals, first responders and their families. ICC Continuing Education classes set to begin soon

            Registration is underway for several continuing education classes that will begin soon at Itawamba Community College. They include Introduction to Single Board Microcomputers and Microcontrollers, Digital Photography for Beginners, Microsoft Excel for Beginners, Personal Finance and Art – A Basic Approach to Watercolor and Certified Nursing Assistant.             Introduction to Single Board Microcomputers and Microcontrollers will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. from Sept. 10-19. It provides students with basic knowledge and basic concepts of single board computers and controllers. The class is intended for individuals possessing a basic understanding of computers and electricity, targeting both STEM educators and hobbyists. Topics covered include Single Board Computers, Introduction to the Raspberry Pi SBC, Introduction to the Arduino SBC and Basic Setup and Programming with Arduino IDE software. The fee is $100, which includes the Arduino book.             Digital Photography for Beginners is designed for those who have a new SLR camera or want to increase their skill with a camera they already have. 'Fort Spillman' on display in ICC Fine Arts Gallery through Oct. 2

The paintings of Memphis, Tenn.-based artist Bobby Spillman, which is the first exhibit hosted this fall in Itawamba Community College’s W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Gallery at the Fulton Campus, will be on display through Oct. 2.             The collection titled “Fort Spillman” consists of 12 large acrylic and mixed media paintings deeply layered in imagery surrounding cultural narrative and personal experience.             “The work is a reaction to the day-to-day act of living,” Spillman said. “It is sometimes a compilation of ongoing subconscious chatter acting as a surface to collect the filtered distractions, and in other pieces, the artist focuses on a single image that reflects a more thought-out singular moment.”             Inspired by cartoons, comics, satire, art history, traditional tattoo flash and childhood pop culture, Spillman’s works are created in a range of mediums from paint, ink, aerosol, collage and color pencil.             Spillman, who earned his master’s degree from the University of Memphis, currently teaches advanced placement art in the Germantown Municipal School District.             Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.             For more information, contact Shawn ...

ICC schedules Sept. 26 Fall Preview Day for area high school seniors

High school seniors will have an opportunity to learn about Itawamba Community College during its Fall Preview Day, which is scheduled for September 26 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center at the Fulton Campus.                 Fall Preview Day attendees will also have free admission for the ICC/Mississippi Delta football game at Eaton Field, beginning with a tailgate at 5 p.m.                 They can select from up to two information sessions about ICC’s schools of academics, career education and health science, and participants will hear directly from faculty within the areas. They can choose which schools to attend based on a selected major through the registration link. Attendees will also receive information on involvement at ICC, financial aid/scholarships, housing and residence life, Phi Theta Kappa and honors. There will also be a question-and-answer session. ICC schedules adult education orientation sessions at Belden, Pontotoc

Itawamba Community College will enroll new adult education students at orientations at the Belden Center, Sept. 30, and the Pontotoc WIN Center, Oct. 1. The sessions at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) will include day classes – individuals 18+ years of age, 9 a.m. and those 16-17 years old, 1 p.m.; and evening classes – all ages, 4:30 p.m. Individuals over the age of 16 are invited to register at Pontotoc beginning at 1:30 p.m. Participants must have a photo ID, and 16-/17-year-olds should be accompanied by a parent or guardian and bring a withdrawal form from the most recent school attended. Belden Center classes include Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Entry into the adult education area is across from the WIN Job Center at ICC-Belden.
