CenterStage 15th anniversary concert

Itawamba Community College’s CenterStage will present its 15th anniversary concert at 6:30 p.m., Apr. 19, in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus.             Nineteen singers/dancers will perform a variety of pop music with exciting choreography. Selections include Long Train Runnin’, Better when I’m Dancin’, Take Me Home and Motown Medley.             Vocalists/dancers include Chloe Grissom of Ackerman; Fields Ferguson of Batesville; Lauren Cole of Caledonia; Richard Gore, Savion Lucious, both of Columbus; Valerie Blake, Grace Gaddy, both of Fulton; Jace Pounds of Golden; Drew West, Emily Stephens, both of Mantachie; Elizabeth Wilson of Mathiston; Gabby Clayton of Nettleton; Natalie Garrett, Dawson McCord, both of Pontotoc; Chase Crosby, Rebekah Townsend, Joy Tomes, all of Saltillo; Tyler Patterson and Daurian Lewis, both of Tupelo. April 2018 accelerated term

              Registration for Itawamba Community College’s second four-week eLearning class term is continuing at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses.               Students may register through Apr. 9, which is the first day of classes. Early Childhood Academy April activities

             Itawamba Community College’s Early Childhood Academy has scheduled several events for April.             An Early Childhood Academy Vision Board Workshop will be Apr. 2 from 6-8 p.m. in room 608 of the Belden Center and Apr. 5 from 6-8 p.m. in room 126 of the Student Support Center at the Tupelo Campus. The two-hour workshop will explain how to reach goals by creating a vision board, which is a collection of pictures, phrases and art outlining goals for the year.             Scheduled for the Week of the Young Child are the following events:             Apr. 16, 1-2 p.m. – Music Monday – Sing, Dance, Celebrate and Learn activities including Brain Boogie Busters, Zumba for Kids Song and Dance Activity and Nursery Rhymes;             Apr. 17, 1-2 p.m. – Tasty Tuesday – Healthy Eating and Fitness at Home and School,  including apple, fruit, donuts activity; food group sorting from the My Plate website and Green Salad craft;             Apr. 18, 1-2 p.m. – Work Together Wednesday – Work Together, Build Together, Learn Together – floating structures and gumdrop bridge;             Apr. 19, 1-2 p.m. – ...

Backyard Astronomy set for Fulton

Itawamba Community College will present a Backyard Astronomy session from 6-9 p.m., Apr. 19, at the Fitness Center on the Fulton Campus. The event will feature astronomy-related activities including a portable planetarium from the University of Mississippi; a presentation entitled “The Ringmakers of Saturn” by ICC astronomy instructor Bob Swanson; and a general-interest astronomy video entitled “Dark Universe.” Weather permitting, participants will have an opportunity to view the night sky from the parking lot. Attendees will pick up some naked-eye viewing tips as well as have the chance to look through several of ICC’s telescopes at features such as the waxing crescent moon, the Beehive Cluster and the Hercules Cluster. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Swanson’s background includes Shannon High School, where he taught physics, physical science and earth science; professional meteorologist - six years as a TV weatherman and four years as assistant weather editor of USA Today. ICC, partners to host caregivers conference

            Itawamba Community College, along with several community partners, is hosting “The Fearless Caregiver Senior Adult Conference,” from 4-7:30 p.m., Apr. 19, which includes a resource fair and refreshments, at the Belden Center.             The come-and-go conference is designed to equip caregivers with the knowledge, skills and elder resources available in the region. Attendees will receive a booklet containing important information for caregivers.             Area experts will discuss topics including independent living, assisted living, nursing home – who does what, 4 p.m.; the difference in home health and hospice, 4:30 p.m.; what are geropsychiatric services and do loved ones need them, 4:50 p.m.; navigating legal services, 5:20 p.m.; Medicare vs. Medicaid, 5:50 p.m.; and senior safety including home security, fraud and criminal background checks, 6:50 p.m. For more information on the conference, email admin@sanctuaryhospice.org or call (662) 620-5365.             Respite training for caregivers and professionals will be offered earlier that day. ICC Bass Club to sponsor tournament

The Itawamba Community College Bass Club will sponsor a youth tournament, Apr. 28, at Fulton in conjunction with the city’s Bluegrass, Blues & BBQ Festival.             The tournament is open to any student in the sixth through twelfth grades. Teams will consist of two students, and the boat captain must be 19 years of age or older.  The entry fee is $30 per boat.             Launch will be at safelight from the Beaver Lake ramp, and check-in at 2:15 p.m. at the boat ramp. Participants are to lock through at their own risk. Weigh-in is at 3 p.m. in downtown Fulton on the square.             Cash and prizes totaling $2,000 will be awarded.             Entries and the $30 fee should be brought to a pretournament meeting before blastoff at the ramp at Beaver Lake.             For more information, contact Jason Campbell at (662) 862-8357 or email jwcampbell@iccms.edu.

2018 Honors Orientation

            Online registration is underway for an Honors Orientation at Itawamba Community College, which will be Apr. 18 for students who score 24 or higher on the ACT.             The free event begins with check-in at 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of the David C. Cole Student Services building on the Fulton Campus.             Honors Orientation will include ice breakers and small group sessions conducted by ICC’s student Orientation Leaders to enable incoming freshmen to become more acclimated with ICC and campus life, according to coordinator Emily Tucker.  In addition, ICC faculty advisers and counselors will meet individually with students to discuss their major and future plans upon graduating from ICC. PTK chapters win regional awards

            Itawamba Community College’s chapters of Phi Theta Kappa received several awards at the organization’s regional conference, Mar. 2-3, at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.             Awards for the Upsilon Sigma chapter (Fulton Campus) include Most Distinguished Chapter finalist (sixth place); College Project (third place),  Honors in Action (tenth place); first place for research on North Korea: Theme War and Peace for Honors in Action Study Topic – Global Perspectives: How the World Works; Digital Scrapbook runner-up; David Leonard Travel Award, Five-Star Chapter; Jolene Hoots of Amory, Bennie Warren Most Distinguished Advisor Award runner-up and Horizon Award for Advisors (service to the chapter award); Hunter Holley of Nettleton, runner-up for Most Distinguished Chapter Officer and Order of the Golden Key; Heather McCormick of Fulton, Horizon Award for Advisors; Robin Lowe of Amory, Horizon Award for Advisors; and Makaela Dickerson of Smithville, regional reporter.             The Beta Tau Sigma Chapter (Tupelo Campus) awards include Regional Project Award runner-up; Honors in Action (ninth place); Five-Star Chapter; and Ira Lindsay Kinard of Houston, Paragon Award for Advisors runner-up.             Both ICC chapters are ...

ICC sophomores named to All-Mississippi Academic Team

            Itawamba Community College sophomore Hunter Holley of Nettleton has been selected to the All-Mississippi Academic Team first team, and the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship. In addition, Fields Ferguson of Batesville, Karla Morales and Lillian Salem, both of Tupelo, were named to the second team.             A graduate of Amory High School, Holley is majoring in biological sciences at ICC, where he is the president of the Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at the Fulton Campus. He is also serving as the Mississippi/Louisiana PTK Regional Reporter and is a member of the Indian Delegation and Science Club. Last year he served as the Monroe County representative for the Student Government Association. Among his honors are Hall of Fame, Mr. Itawamba Community College, regional PTK Most Distinguished Chapter Officer runner-up, Order of the Golden Key, president’s list, ICC’s student representative for HEADWAE and recipient of numerous scholarships, including one of 10 in the nation to receive the prestigious Pearson Scholarship.
