ICC's 'The Calliope' places first in MCCCWA competition Itawamba Community College’s “The Calliope” has won first place in the Creative Writing Journal – In-House, Professionally Printed Journal” category awarded by the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association. The 2022 edition of the student journal of art and poetry, which was published online in the spring, included 10 poems and 13 illustrations. Editors included ICC art department co-chair Shawn Whittington of Saltillo, art, and English instructor Keith Morris of Tupelo, poetry. Student poetry editors were Connor Monaghan of Aberdeen and Jessica George of Tupelo. “We are very pleased to be recognized and awarded by the MCCCWA for our publication,” Whittington said. “The Calliope has been a collaboration between the Art and English departments for 10 years. We managed to publish an edition even through the hiccup of COVID and quarantine. During that time, Keith Morris and I have streamlined the process and have both learned a lot along the way. ICC to honor four with Alumni awards during Homecoming activities, Oct. 6 Itawamba Community College will honor its 2022 Alumnus of the Year, Distinguished Service award recipient and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees during Homecoming activities, Oct. 6, at the Fulton Campus. They include Dr. C.K. “Dick” White of Tupelo, Alumnus of the Year; Miss. Rep. Donnie Bell of Fulton, ICC Distinguished Service award; and David Duke of Clinton and Marty Cooper of Fulton, Athletic Hall of Fame. White, who is a native of Fulton, graduated from Itawamba Agricultural High School and from 1969-71 attended IJC where he was a member of the baseball team. In 2020, he retired as chief medical officer of the North Mississippi Medical Center. From 2018-20, he also served as interim chief quality and safety medical officer for North Mississippi Health Services, and since 2016, executive board member of Connected Care Partners CIN. He has an extensive list of honors and awards, including NMMC Surgeon of the Year and Itawamba Agricultural High School Alumnus of the Year. Recent ICC graduate Finley receives Trustmark Workforce Development Scholarship Recent Itawamba Community College graduate Nelson Finley of New Albany has received the Trustmark Workforce Development Scholarship. Finley is among 25 members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society to receive the $200 scholarship, which is awarded in states throughout Trustmark’s marketplace who plan to enter the workforce upon the completion of an associate degree or certification. Finley, who majored in Computer Programming Technology, is a member of PTK, and his honors included All-Mississippi Academic Team and the Dean’s List. ICC schedules community tailgate with a twist Itawamba Community College will host its annual community tailgate on Sept. 15 from 5-6:30 p.m. with a new twist this year. The Community Tailgate Fan Fest at The Grove on the Fulton Campus will have plenty of “fun” activities preceding the home football game vs. Northeast Mississippi Community College. Food trucks and various groups at ICC are scheduled to be on hand with food and activities, and the public is invited to attend. “Live entertainment by DJ Marky Mark of Best Productions will begin at 5 p.m., and Do Right BBQ, Jo’s Café, Funky Cones and Snowie will be available,” said ICC Director of Marketing and Community Engagement Nina Strother. “There will be a kid’s zone with games, face painting, bounce houses, inflatable slides and an obstacle course, and fans are welcome to bring their own tents, lawn chairs and blankets to tailgate.” To continue the celebration of ICC’s 75th anniversary, ICC Alumni Association President Chuck Howell of Pontotoc will display his 1948 Plymouth, the year that the college opened its doors in Fulton. ICC to honor Carrie Ball-Williamson, Nanci Gray for legacy Award-winning Itawamba Community College women’s basketball coaches Carrie Ball-Williamson of Pontotoc and Nanci Gray of Tupelo will be honored for their legacy during homecoming activities at the Fulton Campus beginning at 3 p.m., Oct. 6. The Fitness Center will be named the Carrie Ball-Williamson Recreational Center at 3 p.m., and the court of the Davis Event Center, for Gray during the Alumni awards which will be presented beginning at 4 p.m. A reception for all honorees will be in the DEC lobby between events. Ball-Williamson, who retired in June, became ICC’s athletic director in 2002, after serving in various roles since 1993, including director of student activities and both head women’s softball and basketball coach. Her honors include ICC Adviser of the Year, Trailblazer of the Year, MACJC Coach of the Year (three times), NJCAA Loyalty Award and inductee into both the ICC and MACJC Athletic Hall of Fame. ICC's Baldwin, Strother selected as 2022-23 MCCLA participants Itawamba Community College’s Dylan Baldwin of Pontotoc, director of career education, and Nina Strother of Fulton, director of marketing and community engagement, have been selected as participants for the 2022-23 Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy. Baldwin, who joined the ICC faculty in 2013 as collision repair instructor, was promoted to his current position in July 2021. He earned the associate’s degree from ICC, the bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi and the master’s degree from Mississippi State University. His honors include the 2017 Mississippi Community College Board Leadership Academy and multiple career-related certifications. From 2012-13, he was an instructor at the Tupelo Career and Technical Center. Baldwin is a member of several advisory committees, including Front Line Leadership Curriculum Development, Itawamba Career and Technical Center and Tupelo Career and Technical Center. ICC adds Associate Degree Nursing honor society Itawamba Community College ‘s Associate Degree Nursing students who qualify will now have an opportunity to participate in an honor society associated with the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing, according to Dr. Dana Walker, program director. “The addition of an Alpha Delta Nu chapter offers a unique opportunity to acknowledge the academic distinction of our nursing students,” Walker said. Miller presentation is second in Reflecting Mississippi series at ICC-Fulton, Sept. 21 Mary Miller, writer and assistant professor of English and creative writing (fiction) at The W, will present “An Evening with Mary Miller: A Mississippi Writer’s Reflection,” Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center Auditorium at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus. She will also conduct a writing workshop at 11 a.m., Sept. 22, in the ICC Fulton Campus library. Two ICC students receive Mississippi Automotive Manufacturers Association scholarships Two Itawamba Community College students were among the winners of Mississippi Automotive Manufacturers Association scholarships for 2022-23. Chad Bishop of Blue Springs and Joseph Harper of Baldwyn each received an award of $1,500 for one academic year to be used for educational expenses. Bishop, who is a sophomore at ICC majoring in robotics automation, has been a wastewater treatment plant operator at APMM in Guntown for the last 11 years. He is a certified treatment specialist and a hands-on practitioner with operational, analytical and maintenance proficiency across a full spectrum of wastewater systems and equipment. Bishop said that he is “excited for the opportunity to work as a maintenance team member in the automotive industry. With the hands-on training I am receiving, I will be more prepared to take on maintenance responsibilities at APMM when I finish.
