ICC to host Code Blue and Red event, Mar. 11

Itawamba Community College’s Health Sciences Division will host a Code Blue and Red event from 8:45 a.m.-noon, March 11, in the Health Science Education Center at the Tupelo Campus. Fifty-six students from Itawamba and Lee Counties Career and Technical Centers and Mooreville and North Pontotoc High Schools will be on campus to view this simulation of three scenarios: a COVID patient, labor and delivery and a trauma accident, which will showcase seven health science programs, said Michael Holloway, recruitment coordinator and adviser. A North Mississippi Medical Center ambulance will arrive, and the students will see first-hand the need for and the role healthcare professionals play in the process. “It will be an impactful program,” Holloway said, “Our hope is that these students see the ‘real-life’ expertise used by the graduates of ICC’s programs.” Participating programs include students and faculty from Associate Degree Nursing, Occupational and Physical Therapy Assistant, Paramedic, Respiratory Care, Radiologic Technology and Surgical Technology. ICC's Morris schedules humanities presentation for Mar. 28

            Keith Morris of Tupelo, recipient of Itawamba Community College’s Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award for 2022, will present “Little Boxes: The Importance of Purpose” at 6 p.m., Mar. 28, at the Health Science Education Center at the Tupelo Campus.             “I’ve come to think of my writing as little boxes, idea containers,” Morris said. “My purpose for writing has changed since I first started. As my purpose has changed, so has the care with which I build and fill the little boxes.”             Morris earned the bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi and master’s degree from Mississippi State University. Since 2008, he has served as an English instructor at ICC, where he has co-created World Literature I and Drama Production IV and created Writing for Publication. He is poetry editor for “The Calliope” and sponsor for both Sigma Kappa Delta and Film Club. Morris has served as a poetry judge for SKD’s Hedera Helix literary journal for the last two years and ICC’s entries for the Mississippi Community College Creative Writing Association. ICC's Howard to receive PTK Paragon award

Bradley Howard of Saltillo, Computer Science Division chair at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a recipient of Phi Theta Kappa’s 2022 Paragon Award for New Advisers.             He will be among those recognized during PTK Catalyst 2022, the society’s annual convention in Denver, Colo., Apr. 7-9.             Howard, who has been employed at ICC since 2006, is sponsor for the STEM and Computer clubs and eLearning lead instructor for computer science. His committee service includes College Council, Commencement, Curriculum, eLearning, Honors Council, Instructional Policies and Planning and Assessment. Howard’s honors include Lamplighter award recipient and sponsor for ICC’s first Top 10 finalist team for the American Association of Community Colleges and National Science Foundation’s 2021 Community College Innovation Challenge. He also cowrote a $20,000 grant that ICC received to implement a STEM Club, STEM week and an Introduction to STEM Professions course. ICC to 'Reach Out' to students, faculty during mental health awareness event

Itawamba Community College will Reach Out to both students and faculty/staff next week (Mar. 7-10) to provide support and assistance in the areas covered by mental health. “While we continue to navigate unprecedented times in our world, we recognize that young adults are experiencing much higher levels of stress and are also reporting much higher rates of mental health challenges in recent years,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “With a nationwide awareness of the challenges that students face, especially resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, including social isolation and rapid transition to remote learning, ICC is actively working to accelerate student and employee assistance in mental health. That support will be in addition to our already active counseling services,” Allen said. ICC’s Reach Out campaign will include such activities as outdoor yoga (Monday), painting kindness rocks and a Spotify playlist (Tuesday), cornhole and cornchips, pet-a-puppy spin and coloring station (Wednesday) and donut and coffee with a cop and #NationalPopcornDay (Thursday). ICC selects 12 to prestigious Hall of Fame

            Twelve Itawamba Community College sophomores have been selected as members of the prestigious Hall of Fame for 2021-22.             They include Weston Steele of Blue Springs; Dionna Huett of Houlka; Hannah Dean of Houston; Kaleb “Ely” Ward of Mooreville; Kelly Jo Ashley of New Albany; Chloe Evans of Plantersville; Leah Pennington of Randolph; Haley Dean of Saltillo; Dalena Duong, Rohan Patel, Richard E. Stone III, all of Tupelo; and Mina Lucius of Vardaman.             Ashley’s activities at ICC include member of the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Students, Nurses Christian Fellowship and Phi Theta Kappa. Her community and church activities are member of Ingomar Baptist Church and the GFWC Magnolia Junior Women’s Book Club. She is the daughter of Edgar and Betty Williamson. Clippard, Richardson receive PTK/Walgreens scholarship

Itawamba Community College Pharmacy Technician program graduates Amber Clippard and Kristian Richardson, both of Nettleton, are the recipients of a $250 scholarship to cover the cost of the Pharmacy Technician Certification exam fee from Walgreens and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.             The Walgreens Pharmacy Technician Certification Scholarship recognizes students who are enrolled in Allied Health or Pharmacy Technician programs and intend to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification exam. Clippard and Richardson are among only 25 students selected to receive the award.             Clippard’s honors and memberships have included Health Occupation Students Association and the National Technical Honor Society. She is married to Dustin Clippard.             Richardson is a member of the Beta Tau Sigma Chapter of PTK. She attends Crosspointe Church in Nettleton. ICC schedules Spring Preview Day, Mar. 25

            High school juniors will have an opportunity to learn about student life at Itawamba Community College during Spring Preview Day, Mar. 25, from 9 a.m.-noon at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus.             The schedule includes arrival and check-in, 8:15-8:50 a.m.; welcome, 9 a.m.; preview expo, 9:15 a.m.; and optional lunch at the dining hall, noon. A campus tour is optional.             The Spring Preview Day will include information about ICC’s academic, health science and career education programs, and participants can interact directly with faculty within the areas. The preview expo will enable prospective students to visit with programs, offices, departments and student organizations to learn more about academic and student involvement opportunities.             According to Jake Hartfield, director of recruitment and orientation, Spring Preview Day is designed specifically for high school juniors to learn about all aspects of student life; however, high school seniors who have not visited ICC before may attend. Five ICC students selected as NASA Space Grant Scholarship recipients

            Five Itawamba Community College students have been selected as the recipients of $500 NASA Space Grant Scholarships.             They include McKinley Paige Dean of Aberdeen; Jacob Clinton of Guntown; Haley Dean, Austin Sanders and Emma Cate Sparks, all of Saltillo.             The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically-focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics and engineering, mathematics and science/mathematics education.             Clinton is an aerospace engineering – aeronautics major at ICC, where he is a member of the Indian Delegation, Student Government Association representative for Lee County, Phi Theta Kappa officer, member of the Baptist Student Union Lead Team – Bible Study Leader, regular attendee at the Wesley Foundation and STEM student. He plans to transfer to Mississippi State University where he will be part of the co-op program to benefit from hands-on experience for his major as well as a resident adviser for MSU housing. ICC Films will present a screening, A Night with Rising Stars, Mar. 8 from 6-8 p.m.             The event, an opportunity to watch original films by ICC students, will be in the banquet room of the David C. Stanford, Dean elected Mr. and Miss ICC for 2021-22

John Bryant Stanford and Haley Dean, both of Saltillo, have been elected Mr. and Miss Itawamba Community College for 2021-22.             Stanford’s activities and honors at ICC include cheerleading captain, student activities, Fashion Tribe, Orientation Leader and Indian Delegation. He is also a member of Belden Baptist Church. His parents are Jim and Evanglina Stanford.             At ICC, Dean is Phi Theta Kappa (Upsilon Sigma) vice president of scholarships, Fulton Campus Student Government Association president, founding member of ICC’s Food Pantry, Honors College participant, Supplemental Instructor, TIS student worker, member of the Indian Delegation and Baptist Student Union and former Orientation Leader. Dean is the recipient of the Linda Kay Gilreath Scholarship, Salutatorian Scholarship, Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship and NASA Space Grant Scholarship. Her honors include Mississippi All-Academic Team, STEM Summer Institute with Brown University, Hall of Fame and President’s List.
