ICC to 'Reach Out' to students, faculty during mental health awareness event

Itawamba Community College will Reach Out to both students and faculty/staff next week (Mar. 7-10) to provide support and assistance in the areas covered by mental health. “While we continue to navigate unprecedented times in our world, we recognize that young adults are experiencing much higher levels of stress and are also reporting much higher rates of mental health challenges in recent years,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “With a nationwide awareness of the challenges that students face, especially resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, including social isolation and rapid transition to remote learning, ICC is actively working to accelerate student and employee assistance in mental health. That support will be in addition to our already active counseling services,” Allen said. ICC’s Reach Out campaign will include such activities as outdoor yoga (Monday), painting kindness rocks and a Spotify playlist (Tuesday), cornhole and cornchips, pet-a-puppy spin and coloring station (Wednesday) and donut and coffee with a cop and #NationalPopcornDay (Thursday). ICC selects 12 to prestigious Hall of Fame

            Twelve Itawamba Community College sophomores have been selected as members of the prestigious Hall of Fame for 2021-22.             They include Weston Steele of Blue Springs; Dionna Huett of Houlka; Hannah Dean of Houston; Kaleb “Ely” Ward of Mooreville; Kelly Jo Ashley of New Albany; Chloe Evans of Plantersville; Leah Pennington of Randolph; Haley Dean of Saltillo; Dalena Duong, Rohan Patel, Richard E. Stone III, all of Tupelo; and Mina Lucius of Vardaman.             Ashley’s activities at ICC include member of the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Students, Nurses Christian Fellowship and Phi Theta Kappa. Her community and church activities are member of Ingomar Baptist Church and the GFWC Magnolia Junior Women’s Book Club. She is the daughter of Edgar and Betty Williamson. Clippard, Richardson receive PTK/Walgreens scholarship

Itawamba Community College Pharmacy Technician program graduates Amber Clippard and Kristian Richardson, both of Nettleton, are the recipients of a $250 scholarship to cover the cost of the Pharmacy Technician Certification exam fee from Walgreens and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.             The Walgreens Pharmacy Technician Certification Scholarship recognizes students who are enrolled in Allied Health or Pharmacy Technician programs and intend to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification exam. Clippard and Richardson are among only 25 students selected to receive the award.             Clippard’s honors and memberships have included Health Occupation Students Association and the National Technical Honor Society. She is married to Dustin Clippard.             Richardson is a member of the Beta Tau Sigma Chapter of PTK. She attends Crosspointe Church in Nettleton. ICC schedules Spring Preview Day, Mar. 25

            High school juniors will have an opportunity to learn about student life at Itawamba Community College during Spring Preview Day, Mar. 25, from 9 a.m.-noon at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus.             The schedule includes arrival and check-in, 8:15-8:50 a.m.; welcome, 9 a.m.; preview expo, 9:15 a.m.; and optional lunch at the dining hall, noon. A campus tour is optional.             The Spring Preview Day will include information about ICC’s academic, health science and career education programs, and participants can interact directly with faculty within the areas. The preview expo will enable prospective students to visit with programs, offices, departments and student organizations to learn more about academic and student involvement opportunities.             According to Jake Hartfield, director of recruitment and orientation, Spring Preview Day is designed specifically for high school juniors to learn about all aspects of student life; however, high school seniors who have not visited ICC before may attend. Five ICC students selected as NASA Space Grant Scholarship recipients

            Five Itawamba Community College students have been selected as the recipients of $500 NASA Space Grant Scholarships.             They include McKinley Paige Dean of Aberdeen; Jacob Clinton of Guntown; Haley Dean, Austin Sanders and Emma Cate Sparks, all of Saltillo.             The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically-focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics and engineering, mathematics and science/mathematics education.             Clinton is an aerospace engineering – aeronautics major at ICC, where he is a member of the Indian Delegation, Student Government Association representative for Lee County, Phi Theta Kappa officer, member of the Baptist Student Union Lead Team – Bible Study Leader, regular attendee at the Wesley Foundation and STEM student. He plans to transfer to Mississippi State University where he will be part of the co-op program to benefit from hands-on experience for his major as well as a resident adviser for MSU housing. ICC Films to present A Night With Rising Stars, Mar. 8

ICC Films will present a screening, A Night with Rising Stars, Mar. 8 from 6-8 p.m.             The event, an opportunity to watch original films by ICC students, will be in the banquet room of the David C. Stanford, Dean elected Mr. and Miss ICC for 2021-22

John Bryant Stanford and Haley Dean, both of Saltillo, have been elected Mr. and Miss Itawamba Community College for 2021-22.             Stanford’s activities and honors at ICC include cheerleading captain, student activities, Fashion Tribe, Orientation Leader and Indian Delegation. He is also a member of Belden Baptist Church. His parents are Jim and Evanglina Stanford.             At ICC, Dean is Phi Theta Kappa (Upsilon Sigma) vice president of scholarships, Fulton Campus Student Government Association president, founding member of ICC’s Food Pantry, Honors College participant, Supplemental Instructor, TIS student worker, member of the Indian Delegation and Baptist Student Union and former Orientation Leader. Dean is the recipient of the Linda Kay Gilreath Scholarship, Salutatorian Scholarship, Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship and NASA Space Grant Scholarship. Her honors include Mississippi All-Academic Team, STEM Summer Institute with Brown University, Hall of Fame and President’s List. Dean and her team were also selected as a finalist in the Community College Innovation Challenge sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges and the National Science Foundation. ICC sets application deadline for Foundation scholarships

ICC reopens key health program this fall using innovative instructional delivery method

            Itawamba Community College is reopening a key health science program this fall using an innovative instructional delivery method.             Diagnostic Medical Sonography will combine an in-person boot camp/lab session at the beginning of both the fall and spring semesters, clinical rotations and online didactic courses. DMS will begin as a one-year (three-semester) program in general sonography, according to instructor Amanda Stone. Graduates will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and will be eligible to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography examinations, including Principles and Instrumentation to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in Abdominal and Obstetrics/Gynecology.  There will also be an option for students to continue into a second year of Cardiac and Vascular Sonography. Beginning in the fall of 2023, licensed professionals may enter that option. The program format will offer an opportunity for potential students from outside ICC’s geographical area to participate as long as clinical sites are approved, Stone said. “We are excited to offer an innovative curriculum that encompasses both in-person labs and clinicals with online didactic courses,” Stone ...

Registration continues for ICC Gateway program

Registration is continuing for the Gateway program at Itawamba Community College.             The program is designed for individuals who are between the ages of 16-24, do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent, want career coaching and are serious about exploring employment opportunities. In addition, those who have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma may qualify if they have another type of barrier, including but not limited to, single parent, low income, disabilities and homeless. Enrollments are currently being accepted for participants in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. Open enrollment for classes in the one-week program begins Mondays at 9 a.m. at the ICC WIN Job Centers. In Belden, call (662) 407-1207 or the WIN Job Centers in Amory (662) 407-1236; Houston (662) 407-1219; or Pontotoc (662) 407-1226). According to WIOA Youth Coordinator Sanders Bell, students can start on Monday and possibly have a job by Friday.
