ICC Food Management Certification class set to begin June 3 at Belden Center

Registration is underway for a Food Management Certification class that will begin June 3 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center.                 The class will meet Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. through June 27.                 Highlights of the hands-on course include both ServSafe® Food Manager and Alcohol Certification, menu planning/preparation, assistance/participation in execution of catered events, résumé/interview skills and both front- and back-of-the-house operations.                 Tuition assistance could be available for those who qualify.                 For more information or to register, call Christy Scheuer, instructor, at (662) 407-1505 or email acscheuer@iccms.edu or pathways@iccms.edu.

Whitt Willis accepted into prestigious Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship program

           Whitt Willis of Madison, formerly of Amory, a recent graduate of Itawamba Community College, has been accepted into the prestigious Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship program.             In 2007, the Mississippi Legislature authorized the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship program, creating a unique program that identifies rural college students who aspire to return to their roots to practice medicine. Academic enrichment, faculty and physician mentoring as well as solid medical school financial support through the MRPSP will enable Willis and other capable young Mississippians to address the challenge of Mississippi’s healthcare crisis.             “We are excited to have Whitt be a part of the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program,” said Tabora Cook, executive director of the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program. “His passion for rural medicine is exactly what our program and the state of Mississippi need. ICC recent graduate, Jordan Allen, selected as candidate for prestigious PROMISE program

Jordan Allen of Jackson, recent graduate of Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a candidate for the Promoting Recruitment Opportunities in Medicine with Individual Study Experience (PROMISE).             The early assurance program for economically/educationally disadvantaged students with a commitment to pursuing a career as a physician is sponsored and managed by the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.             At ICC, Allen was a member of the women’s soccer team, STEM Club, Trading Post, Phi Theta Kappa and Honors College, Instructional Support Leader and Chemistry II tutor for NASA (Mississippi Space Grant Consortium) as well as 2023 Orientation Leader. Her other activities include assistance in the nursery and singing in the choir at New Jerusalem Church in Jackson. She will continue her education at Mississippi College where she plans to major in biology/pre-medicine with a minor in communication. ICC sets first summer term registration

            Registration is underway for the first term of summer classes at Itawamba Community College.             Students may register for traditional full-term and first-term classes anytime until May 23 at 5 p.m. at the David C. Cole Student Services Building on the Fulton Campus and the Academic and Student Center on the Tupelo Campus.             Classes start on May 28, and the last day to register is May 29.             Summer office hours for all college locations are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.             For more information, email eadviser@iccms.edu.

May 30 deadline for ICC selective admission programs

May 30 is the deadline for application for four selective admission programs at Itawamba Community College.             They include Electrical, Industrial Maintenance, Robotics and Automation and Welding. All are taught at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Road).             Selective admission programs, which have a limited number of openings each year, have specific entry-level requirements that must be met before selection for admission to the program. ICC Associate Degree Nursing faculty, students win state awards

            Itawamba Community College’s faculty and students won prestigious awards at the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing conference recently in Biloxi.             ICC’s students won the College Bowl, which consisted of correct responses to NCLEX-RN questions, over opponent teams from nine other community Colleges. Members include Tiree Jones of Aberdeen, Alexis Derrick of Ecru, Kaci Wood of Mantachie and Alexis Koonce of Saltillo.             Of the three faculty awards presented this year, ICC brought home two. Anna Lewis of Mantachie won the Professional Development Award, which was established by the MOADN Board of Directors to support the professional development efforts of associate degree nurse educators. Criteria include employment by an accredited ADN program in Mississippi, membership in MOADN either as an individual or program member and willingness to present the professional development activity at the next annual convention. Miss. Speaker of the House Jason White to deliver keynote address at ICC 10 a.m. commencement ceremony, May 10

Mississippi Representative Jason White will be the speaker for Itawamba Community College’s 10 a.m. commencement ceremony, May 10, at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus.             In January, White was elected as Mississippi’s 62nd Speaker of the House. The Kosciusko native began his service in the Mississippi House of Representatives, District 48, which consists of portions of Attala, Carroll, Holmes and Leake counties, in August 2011. Following re-election in 2016, he was named Rules Chairman and elected Republican Floor Leader by the Republican Caucus. In 2020, his Mississippi House colleagues elected him Speaker Pro Tempore, and his fellow Republicans elected him Republican Caucus Chairman.             White, who is also the City Attorney for Kosciusko, represents a number of governmental entities and utility boards and providers. His previous service includes former Municipal Court Judge and Youth Court Judge and Board of Aldermen for the Town of West. ICC celebrates April as National Welding Month; students in Metallica class share their stories

Chris Adair of Saltillo is a student in Itawamba Community College’s welding class that has been funded by a grant from Metallica’s foundation, All Within My Hands.             He and his classmates as well as all students in ICC’s welding classes are joining in the celebration of April as National Welding Month.             Adair said that enrolling in the class was a great opportunity to learn welding. “I’m hooked on a hobby that I can have for a lifetime.” His grandfather was a welder for both the Navy and NASA. “I would have made my grandfather proud. I can feel his arms on mine when I stick weld.” A general studies graduate in 2018, Adair said he didn’t know what his future would bring. He said he spent a lot of time playing video games. “I didn’t know what to do. I saw the opportunity and decided to go for it. I was nervous at first, but I’ve started a hobby that I enjoy.”             Adair and his classmates have different stories, but their chance meeting in ICC’s welding class has given them ...
