ICC to test Alert system, Oct. 2

Itawamba Community College has upgraded its ICC Alert emergency notification system, which sends important messages to students, faculty and staff on existing or imminent threats, such as inclement weather. A new technical support system has been implemented that will allow users to receive messages through multiple avenues, including a Smartphone app, SMS text messages, email and calls. The College has partnered with Everbridge, an industry leader in emergency messaging, to provide several enhancements to the ICC Alert system. Additional upgrades include faster delivery speeds, personalized weather notifications, community messaging and more.  A system-wide test of the enhanced ICC Alert system is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, at 12:15 p.m. Text messages and phone calls will originate from the phone number, 662.862.8277.  We request that students, faculty, and staff add that number to their phone contacts and name it ICC Alert. The Wednesday test is expected to conclude by 12:30 p.m.  Additionally, the notifications will request recipients to confirm that they have received the test alert. Text message alerts will prompt recipients to reply “YES” to confirm receipt. ICC to honor Tom Childs, Butch Jones, Pernell McPhee, Oct. 3

            Itawamba Community College will honor Alumnus of the Year Tom Childs of Fulton and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees Butch Jones of Fulton and Pernell McPhee of Pahokee, Fla., during Homecoming activities, Oct. 3, at the Fulton Campus.             They will be recognized at an award ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Davis Event Center lobby as well as prior to the ICC vs. Holmes football game which begins at 6:30 p.m. at Eaton Field.             Childs is a retired Fulton attorney, who taught both American and state government, accounting, business law and real estate law at IJC/ICC and served as a former assistant football coach and offensive coordinator for the 1971 Itawamba Indians. He is a former chairman of the board of the ICC Foundation, Inc. as well as of the Alumni fund drive. ICC’s Gallery of Distinction, which is located in the lobby of the David C. ICC ranks no. 2 in Best Colleges for Computer Science and IT in Mississippi

           Itawamba Community College has earned the no. 2 spot in the rankings of the Best Colleges for Computer Science and IT in Mississippi, according to ComputerTrainingSchools.com, a reliable resource for those considering enrolling in a technology-focused degree program.             ICC secured this placement due to its higher-than-average scores in multiple categories within the study, including the number of tech-related programs, the retention of full-time students and the percentage of undergraduates who were awarded financial aid.             According to the managing editor of QuinStreet, Marcelle White, “ComputerTrainingSchools.com’s study of institutions that offer technology-related degree programs is designed to highlight schools that do an exceptional job of helping students advance their education, whether students use their degree to start along a specific career path, change careers or as a stepping stone toward a bachelor’s degree. BancorpSouth supports ICC's high school equivalency program

BancorpSouth Bank (NYSE: BXS) is committed to its communities.  The bank recently donated $3,000 to Itawamba Community College’s high school equivalency program.  The adult education/basic skills program, formerly known as the GED program, enables students—ages 16 and older—to complete a high school equivalency diploma through classes offered in the college’s five-county district, which includes Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties.  “We are grateful for this significant donation from BancorpSouth,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “None of the work we do would be possible without the generous support of individuals and companies, like BancorpSouth, that believe in the mission of Itawamba Community College and our communities as a whole.”  ICC received the donation from BancorpSouth on Aug. 20, when Allen was invited to speak to community leaders about the college’s work with students enrolled in the adult education/basic skills program. ICC sets Military Appreciation, Sept. 19

            Past and current members of the armed forces will be honored during Itawamba Community College’s Military Appreciation Night, Sept. 19, at Lambert Stadium/Eaton Field at the Fulton Campus during ICC’s football game with Coahoma Community College, which begins at 6:30 p.m. and pre-game at 6 p.m.             Special activities will include a salute during halftime featuring ICC’s All-American Band. ICC Homecoming set for Oct. 3

           Itawamba Community College will celebrate Homecoming on Oct. 3 at the Fulton Campus beginning at 4 p.m.             The schedule includes Alumnus of the Year and Athletic Hall of Fame award ceremony, 4 p.m. in the Davis Event Center lobby and Red, Hot & Blue Cookout, 5-6 p.m., Davis Event Center lawn. In addition, the Alumnus of the Year and Athletic Hall of Fame inductees will be honored during pregame ceremonies beginning at 6 p.m. at Eaton Field. Upton joins ICC staff as director of Advancement

            Michael Upton of Tupelo has joined the Itawamba Community College staff as Director of Advancement.             His previous professional work includes serving as Major Gift Officer/Regional Philanthropy Officer for the Red Cross of Mississippi. Prior to that, he was Director of Development for several areas, including the University Libraries, Center for the Study of Southern Culture, Gertrude C. Ford Center for Performing Arts, University Museum and Historic Houses and the School of Applied Sciences.             A graduate of ICC, Upton earned both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Mississippi.             Upton will oversee and direct all functions of both the Foundation and Alumni Association through identifying, cultivating, soliciting and managing fundraising, events and principal relationships.             “I am confident that Michael brings a wealth of philanthropy experience that will prove to be beneficial to both the ICC Foundation and Alumni Association,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen.            

ICC schedules Junior Preview Day

            Area high school juniors and their parents are invited to participate in a special event at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus, Sept. 19.             Junior Preview Day, which will begin with registration at the Davis Event Center at 3 p.m., is designed for current high school juniors and their parents or guardians to receive valuable information to assist in the decision-making process of after high school choices.             Highlights of the event will include meetings with areas of interest, tour of the campus and residence halls, free dinner and the ICC vs. Coahoma football game.             Areas to be showcased are financial aid, scholarships, admissions, Honors College, academic programs, health professions, career education programs and housing.             Registration is available at http://www.iccms.edu/JuniorPreview.             For more information, contact Michael Holloway at jmholloway@iccms.edu or (662) 620-5278.  

Armistead work currently on display in ICC gallery

The 2019 fall opening exhibition at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center gallery at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus features the paintings of John Armistead of Tupelo. Currently on display through Sept. 19, ‘Remembrance of Things Past’ is a collection of oils and watercolors depicting primarily rural landscapes of surrounding North Mississippi counties as well as a few portraits. Armistead, a Presbyterian minister, is an award-winning artist, author and journalist. He holds degrees from Mississippi College (B.A.), the University of Mississippi (M.A. in Classical Greek and Latin), Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (D.Min. in Theology and History) He has also studied at The Graduate Theological Union of Berkeley, Sorrento Lingue International Language Institute in Sorrento, Italy, the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design in New York.             Armistead began formal studio training in Mobile, Ala. when he was eight years old, working in pastels and oils. Pounds, McIntosh selected as Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars

            Itawamba Community College sophomores Anna Pounds of Golden and Torrance (TJ) McIntosh of Wren have been selected as 2019 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars and will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.             McIntosh is majoring in biology with a pre-medicine concentration. He is vice president of scholarship for the Upsilon Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, vice president of the Fulton Campus Student Government Association and a member of the Indian Delegation and All-American Band. He is a member of the Greater New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church of Nettleton, where he serves as the youth department president, usher board member and youth choir member. He is the son of Torrance and Sylvia McIntosh.             Pounds currently serves as the vice president of leadership for the Upsilon Sigma Chapter of PTK. She is a member of the Honors College and Sigma Kappa Delta and has served as secretary of the Political Science Club. She is an accounting/pre-law major.
