ICC President Allen to receive prestigious Paragon Award Itawamba Community College President Dr. Jay Allen has been selected as a recipient of Phi Theta Kappa’s Paragon Award for New Presidents. The awards are given to new college presidents who have shown strong support of student success by recognizing academic achievement, leadership and service among high-achieving students at their college. Recipients were nominated by students on their campus. “It is an honor to be nominated by our students for this award,” Allen said. “It is most rewarding to watch students succeed as they grow in leadership and academics during their participation in the PTK organization.” Allen became ICC’s seventh president on July 1, 2017 after serving as president and chief executive officer of Hopkinsville Community College in Kentucky since January 2014. ICC to conduct mock safety training exercises at Fulton, Tupelo Itawamba Community College will conduct mock safety training exercises in coordination with local law enforcement agencies at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses, Feb. 18. The Fulton Campus event will be from 8-11:30 a.m. at the Boggs Humanities Building, and the Tupelo Campus drill from 12:30-3 p.m. at the Student Support Center. “This will be a test of our emergency preparedness procedures at these locations just as we did recently at the ICC Belden Center,” said Dr. Brad Boggs, dean of students. “The normal operation of the facilities will not be disrupted since classes won’t meet on Feb. 18 due to Presidents’ Day.” The event is only a training exercise which will involve the majority of ICC’s faculty and staff at all locations. “This will provide local law enforcement, emergency responders and the College an opportunity to work together in the event of an incident. April freshman orientation online registration begins Online registration has begun for April freshman orientation sessions at Itawamba Community College. Incoming freshmen with ACT scores of 24 and above are invited to participate in the Apr. 17 honors session, which begins with registration at 12:30 p.m. in the Band Hall at the Fulton Campus. The schedule includes welcome, both parent and student orientations, student advising and ID and shirt pickup. Additional sessions for all students are scheduled for Apr. 22, 24 and 30 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. in the same location. “Among the advantages of attending an April orientation session are scheduling summer and fall classes early and from a wide variety of options including days, times and instructors and completing the process before graduation from high school,” said Dr. Melissa Haab, dean of enrollment services. ICC's Tierra Hood named semifinalist for Jack Kent Cooke scholarship Itawamba Community College sophomore Tierra Hood of Fairview has been selected as a semifinalist for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. Hood is a biology pre-med major, who will earn the Associate of Arts degree in May. She is committed to attend the University of Mississippi, where she will complete work on the master’s degree before enrolling in medical school to become a doctor, either a pediatrician or emergency room physician. She is a member of ICC’s Honors Program, Science Club and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Hood is a dedicated member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church youth group. She volunteers in the church’s nursery, children’s church and Awana program and is an Emergency Medical Responder with the Northeast Itawamba Volunteer Fire Department. "Addicted: The Extra Mile to Recovery" set for ICC-Fulton, Feb. 27 Itawamba Community College alumnus Jamie Richey of Fulton will present “Addicted: The Extra Mile to Recovery,” at 6 p.m., Feb. 27, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. With help and a newly-found faith, Richey shares his compelling story of addiction and attempted suicide. After moving to Fulton in the third grade, Richey attended Itawamba Agricultural High School, where he was an honor student. After graduating in 2006, he attended ICC, where he was awarded several scholarships, including ACT, GPA and leadership. Beginning in high school, he experimented with marijuana and pills before escalating to more harmful drugs. His powerful story begins with an average childhood that led to addiction following the tragic death of his father to the highs and lows of drug use and an attempt to end his life. ICC's Swanson participates in NITARP Itawamba Community College astronomy instructor Bob Swanson of Tupelo was among more than 30 participants from the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program who attended the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society from Jan. 6-10 in Seattle, Wash. He is the first Mississippi educator to participate in NITARP. For more than a decade, NITARP has partnered small groups of educators with a research astronomer for original, year-long research projects. At the AAS meeting, the educators from the 2018 class, along with some of their students, presented the results of their work over the past year. As part of NITARP’s 2019 class, Swanson will be teamed with three other educators from Iowa, Kansas and Massachusetts, as well as selected students, to work with astrophysicist Dr. Luisa Rebull of Caltech.
