2019 Summer Orientation Leaders

            Itawamba Community College has selected leaders for the 2019 summer orientation sessions, which begin in April.             They include Laura Buskirk of Amory; Addie Bridges of Belden; Elizabeth Ingram of Corinth; Hannah Scott of Ecru; Cailee Yielding of Fulton; Peyton Blair of Greenwood Springs; Brandon Adair, Mattie Pettigo, both of Guntown; Matthew Burrows, Lexie Dickinson, both of Mantachie; Jake Nelson of Okolona; Madison Haley of Olive Branch; Morgan Norris of Philadelphia; Samantha Nanney of Pontotoc; Lauren Heath of Randolph; Emily Shaffer of Saltillo; Makaela Dickerson, Olivia Sagely, both of Smithville; and Amber Jones, Destiny Vaughn, Josh Vaughn, all of Tupelo.             They will lead small group activities, conduct campus tours and provide information to incoming freshmen during the orientation sessions.

"Addicted: The Extra Mile to Recovery" set for ICC-Fulton, Feb. 27

            Itawamba Community College alumnus Jamie Richey of Fulton will present “Addicted: The Extra Mile to Recovery,” at 6 p.m., Feb. 27, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus.             With help and a newly-found faith, Richey shares his compelling story of addiction and attempted suicide. After moving to Fulton in the third grade, Richey attended Itawamba Agricultural High School, where he was an honor student. After graduating in 2006, he attended ICC, where he was awarded several scholarships, including ACT, GPA and leadership. Beginning in high school, he experimented with marijuana and pills before escalating to more harmful drugs. His powerful story begins with an average childhood that led to addiction following the tragic death of his father to the highs and lows of drug use and an attempt to end his life.             The presentation is free and open to the public.             For more information, contact Chad Case, director of housing and residence life, at (662) 862-8232 or email cgcase@iccms.edu.

            The 2019 Itawamba Community College Most Beautiful Pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m., Feb. 12, at the W.O. ICC Board elects 2019 officers

           Danny Robbins of Pontotoc has been elected chairman of the Itawamba Community College Board of Trustees for 2019.             Other officers include Carl Comer of Fulton, first vice chairman; Barry Dendy of Woodland, second vice chairman; Gill Simmons of Tupelo, secretary; and Mac Allen Thomas of Aberdeen, immediate past chairman.             Also serving on ICC’s Board of Trustees are Ollie Young, Steve Eaton, both of Houston; Amy Anderson, Dr. Jerome Smith, both of Okolona; Dr. Betsy Collums of Houlka; D.L. “Bud” Wiygul of Nettleton; Mark Tigner, Trae Wiygul, both of Mantachie; Ronnie Gholston, Stacy Russell, both of Fulton; Dan Lee Bishop of Baldwyn; Bonnie Jean Webb of Belden; Jimmy Weeks, William Shack, both of Tupelo; Greg McKissick of Saltillo; Danny Gladney, Jeanette Atkins, both of Aberdeen; Marilyn Sumerford of Smithville; Scott Cantrell, Thomas Griffith, both of Amory;  Danny Park of Belden; Brock Puckett, Gerald Bell, James H. ICC's Swanson participates in NITARP

             Itawamba Community College astronomy instructor Bob Swanson of Tupelo was among more than 30 participants from the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program who attended the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society from Jan. 6-10 in Seattle, Wash. He is the first Mississippi educator to participate in NITARP.              For more than a decade, NITARP has partnered small groups of educators with a research astronomer for original, year-long research projects. At the AAS meeting, the educators from the 2018 class, along with some of their students, presented the results of their work over the past year.                 As part of NITARP’s 2019 class, Swanson will be teamed with three other educators from Iowa, Kansas and Massachusetts, as well as selected students, to work with astrophysicist Dr. Luisa Rebull of Caltech. They will present their research in detecting star-forming regions in the Lagoon Nebula, using archived data from the Kepler Space Telescope, at the 2020 AAS winter meeting to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii. “This NITARP opportunity allows me to directly involve a student, Jaydin Walthers ...

ICC sets Unity programs, Feb. 19

           Itawamba Community College’s Student Government Associations and Student Activities have scheduled Celebration of Unity programs at both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses, Feb. 19.             The Tupelo Campus program will be noon in the student presentation room of the Student Support Center, and the Fulton Campus event will be at 7 p.m. in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium.             Robert Solomon of Tupelo, ICC’s director of admissions/registrar, will be the speaker for the Tupelo Campus program. He is a native of Savannah, Ga. and a product of the Chatham County School System. After graduating from Savannah High School, he attended Tuskegee University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and later, the master’s degree from Troy State University in human resource management. Currently he is pursuing the doctoral degree in business administration with a concentration in leadership from Walden University. Solomon also attended Greater Mount Calvary Bible College and is an ordained minister. Pack the House set for Jan. 24

           Itawamba Community College alumni members and their families will receive free admission upon presentation of their ID to the sixth annual Pack the House, which will be Jan. 24 at the Davis Event Center at the Fulton Campus.             ICC will play East Mississippi Community College with the women’s basketball game beginning at 5:30 p.m., and the men’s at 7:30 p.m.             Additionally, ICC’s spring sports teams, including softball, baseball, tennis and golf, will participate in Meet the Tribe events. 2019 spring semester registration continues

           Open registration at Itawamba Community College for the 2019 spring semester is continuing.             Students may register through Jan. 15 for traditional full-term classes and the January eight-week traditional term; Jan. 23 for the January eight-week eLearning term; and Jan. 25 for full-term eLearning classes, but a late registration fee of $15 will be assessed. However, class selection could possibly be limited.             Traditional day classes began Jan. 9, and eLearning classes will begin Jan. 22.             ICC offers an Adult Learner Incentive Scholarship, which is designed to provide an incentive for new or returning students, age 23 or older, not enrolled in college for the previous two years to pursue a degree at ICC.             Academic, career and technical, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden.             For more information, call (662) 862-8000 or (662) 620-5000 or email go2icc@iccms.edu.

2019 ICC Most Beautiful Pageant set for Feb. 12

            The 2019 Itawamba Community College Most Beautiful Pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m., Feb. 12, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus.             Awards to be presented include 2019 Most Beautiful; first, second, third and fourth alternates; Top 10; People’s Choice Award; Most Social Award; Miss Congeniality; Most Photogenic and Most Ad Sales.             Special guests will be Miss Mississippi 2018 Asya Branch and Miss Mississippi Teen USA Kaylee Brooke McCollum, who is currently an ICC student; and ICC Most Beautiful 2018 Jada Standifer.             Tickets are available for $7 at www.iccms.edu/tickets.             The pageant is sponsored by ICC Alumni Affairs and Foundation.             For more information, contact Dr. Jan Reid-Bunch, executive director, at jrbunch@iccms.edu or (662) 862-8035.

HSE completion bonus

           Those who need to earn a high school equivalency credential (GED or HiSET) can do so at Itawamba Community College between now and Mar. 31 and receive a $100 completion bonus.             Classes are available through the ICC Adult Education program in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties.             Those who are interested or need more information should call (662) 407-1538.
