Summerford work on display in ICC Gallery

            The watercolor paintings of Fulton artist Laura Summerford will be on display through Dec. 7 at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center gallery at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus.             Entitled “Southern Rust and Decay,” the exhibit includes 24 paintings featuring familiar Southern icons and images of the city of Fulton.             “I was born into a family of artistic ability,” Summerford said. “My parents were very creative and nurtured that spirit in my brother and me. This atmosphere helped to mold my future in the art field. From the time that I picked up my favorite red crayon, I was hooked. I would have rather draw and color than anything else.”             Summerford began to watercolor while majoring in graphic art at ICC. “The softness of the medium mesmerized me over the harshness that oils and acrylics possess. ICC receives I2S grant from Families First for Mississippi.

            Itawamba Community College has received a $746,100 grant for its Incentives to Success Career Navigation project from Families First for Mississippi.             The three-year grant will be utilized to help participants succeed in today’s middle-skill job market, according to Josh Gammill, career navigator. The I2S program will collaborate with partners, including community colleges (non-credit/degree pathways), community service organizations, local Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act/WIN Job Centers, business and industry. The primary funder is Families First of North Mississippi. ICC’s WIN Job Centers will link participants to career exploration, job search, on-the-job training or internships and job placement services.             Gammill said that ICC will collaborate with existing workforce and career and technical education pathways that lead to middle-skill job opportunities. The project’s goal is to encourage and motivate at-risk participants to succeed in completing a career pathway and finding gainful employment. Spring registration begins Nov. 15 for students not currently enrolled

            Students who are not currently enrolled at Itawamba Community College, including readmits and transfers, can register for the 2019 spring semester from Nov. 15-Dec. 19, weekdays from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., in the Student Affairs offices on both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses.             The offices are located in the David C. Cole Student Services Building on the Fulton Campus and the Student Support Center at the Tupelo Campus.             Academic, career and technical, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden. Backyard Astronomy set Nov. 15 at ICC-Tupelo

            Itawamba Community College will present a Backyard Astronomy session from 6-9 p.m., Nov. 15, at the Health Science Education Center at the Tupelo Campus.             The event will feature astronomy-related activities including a portable planetarium from the University of Mississippi, a presentation entitled “The Sounds of Science” by ICC astronomy instructor Bob Swanson and short presentations from current ICC astronomy students.             Weather permitting, participants will have an opportunity to view the night sky from the parking lot. Attendees will pick up some naked-eye viewing tips as well as have the chance to look through several of ICC’s telescopes at features such as the Moon, Mars and the Pleiades star cluster.             The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.             Swanson’s background includes Shannon High School, where he taught physics, physical science and earth science; professional meteorologist – six years as a TV weatherman and four years as assistant weather editor of USA Today. Food Service Pathway class set for Nov. 12

            Itawamba Community College has scheduled a four-week Food Service Pathway class at the Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.) beginning Nov. 12.             Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. through Dec. 14.             The program includes Serve Safe® certification, certificate of completion, proper food handling standards, kitchen safety practices, culinary techniques, interview skills and résumé building, money handling and front of the house and back of the house operations.             The class is offered in partnership with Families First of Mississippi.             For more information or to register, contact program director Christy Scheuer at acscheuer@iccms.edu or (662) 407-1505.

Nov. 1 deadline for Jan. PN class applications

Nov. 1 is the deadline for application for a practical nursing class beginning in January 2019 at Itawamba Community College. Upon completion of the 12-month (three semester) program, the graduate will receive a certificate and will be eligible to take the N-CLEX (national board exam) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Licensed practical nurses work under the direction of registered nurses and physicians. They provide direct patient care including treatments and medication delivery in nursing homes, extended care facilities, hospitals, physician’s offices, schools and private homes. ICC's Pannell elected MGS president

Laura Pannell, PhD., C.P.G., lead eLearning faculty for psychology and social work at Itawamba Community College, has been elected to serve as 2019-21 president of The Mississippi Gerontological Society. A resident of New Albany, Pannell is a nationally-credentialed gerontologist and a certified trainer with the State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Academies. Among her professional memberships are North Mississippi State Hospital Human Rights Advocacy committee, Alzheimer’s Planning Council for the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, past president of the ICC-Tupelo/Belden Faculty Association, Mississippi Caregiver Coalition, American Association of Christian Counselors and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Women Educators. Her honors include the NEWMS Women of Distinction award (2015), Mississippi Humanities Council 2015 Teacher Award, HEADWAE award recipient, NISOD Award of Excellence, ICC Award of Excellence, Meritorious Achievement (ICC), Lamplighter and past Leadership Mississippi. Her current service includes church – Women’s Conference co-chair, substitute Sunday School teacher; New Century Club; volunteer advocate for older adults and families; Christmas Adopt an Elder program; Friends of North Mississippi State Hospital and founding and current planning council for the North Mississippi Alzheimer’s conference (nine years). ...

Completion bonus available for high school equivalency credential at ICC between now and Dec.14

            Those who need to earn a high school equivalency credential (GED or HiSET) can do so at Itawamba Community College between now and Dec. 14 and receive a $100 completion bonus.             Classes are available through the ICC Adult Education program in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties.             Those who are interested can call 662.407.1538.

ICC PMMT program receives $16,000 Haas Foundation grant

            Itawamba Community College’s Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology program has received a $16,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation.             According to Barry Emison, ICC’s dean of Career and Technical Instruction, the funds will be used for student aid and certifications. “We appreciate very much the investment by the Haas Foundation in ICC’s Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology program,” Emison said. “Not only is it an investment in the program, but it is an investment in the futures of our students.”             In 1999, Gene Haas formed the foundation which bears his name because he grew up with a strong social conscience instilled by his family. It was initially designed to fund the needs of the local community. Haas Automation is now a billion dollar company. The focus of the foundation has shifted to the current outreach and methodology. Its purpose is to introduce students to careers in machine technology and manufacturing, to build skills in the machining industry and to help military veterans enroll in programs that train them to become skilled machinists.             ICC’s ...
