ICC to offer Complete2Compete information sessions

Area residents who have earned some college credit but insufficient hours for a degree can receive information about the statewide Complete2Compete initiative during special sessions at Itawamba Community College in January. Dates are Jan. 4 from 5-7 p.m. and Jan. 6 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. in the Student Support Center on the Tupelo Campus. ICC is among Mississippi’s two- and four-year institutions collaborating in the Complete2Compete initiative, which is designed to increase the number of adults with postsecondary degrees or credentials of value to positively impact the state’s educational attainment rate and economy as well as the quality of life for those who complete their degrees. The program matches adults with a Complete2Compete coach at an institution who reviews prior credit and provides them with a pathway for obtaining a degree. Complete2Compete is available to Mississippi adults who are at least 21 years old, have not earned a postsecondary degree and have been out of college for at least two years. Spring registration continues through Dec. 18

Registration for the 2018 spring semester at Itawamba Community College will continue through Dec. 18. To register, visit the Student Affairs offices on either the Fulton or Tupelo campuses between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., weekdays. Locations are the Student Support Center (Tupelo) and David C. Cole Student Services building (Fulton). Academic, career and technical, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are always available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden. New or returning students, age 23 or older, who have not been enrolled in college for the previous two years, can apply for an Adult Learner Incentive Scholarship, which provides half-tuition for one semester. Criteria for selection include Mississippi resident, enrollment in a minimum of six semester hours, meeting admission requirements and in good standing with ICC. The scholarship cannot be combined with other ICC institutional scholarships. The next opportunity to register for the spring semester will be during open registration, scheduled for Jan. 4 and 5. Hunter Holley semifinalist for prestigious scholarship

Hunter Holley of Amory, a sophomore at Itawamba Community College, has been selected as a semifinalist for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. The Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is the largest private scholarship in the nation for students transferring from two-year community colleges to four-year institutions that award bachelor’s degrees. Holley is ICC’s first semifinalist. Cooke Scholarships fund the costs of attending college not covered by other financial aid, plus academic advising, stipends for internships, study abroad and opportunities to network with other Cooke Scholars and alumni. In addition, after earning a bachelor’s degree, each Cooke Scholar will be eligible to apply for a scholarship for graduate school worth up to $50,000 a year for up to four years. Since 2000, the Cooke Foundation has awarded approximately $147 million in scholarships to more than 2,000 students and $90 million in grants to organizations that serve outstanding low-income students. Several area residents will participate in a commencement ceremony for the practical nursing program at Itawamba Community College at 7 p.m., Dec. 15, at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. ICC bluegrass and gospel concert

Itawamba Community College will present the 22nd annual bluegrass and gospel concert to benefit the ICC Foundation, Inc., beginning at 4 p.m., Mar. 3, 2018, at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus. Performing will be The Isaacs, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Aaron Wilburn, Kristi Miller and Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. Doors open at 2 p.m. Tickets, which are $30 for reserved seating and $20 for general admission, are available online at www.iccms.edu/concert. MSBC class to begin Jan. 16

Registration is underway for a day class option for the Manufacturing Skills Basic Certification program beginning Jan. 16 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center. The class will meet Mondays through Thursdays through Feb. 28 from 8 a.m.-noon. The program is designed to prepare students desiring to have a career in high-performance manufacturing to be successful. Through this program, students use critical thinking skills, update core skills and knowledge and will earn nationally-recognized credentials. Developed to respond to core knowledge for the current and emerging industry sectors located within the north Mississippi region, the 94-hour MBSC includes three national credentials – 10-hour OSHA, the American Heart Association’s CPR and the Career Readiness Certificate. Comprehensive interactive classes, computer-based tools, experienced instructors and excellent reference materials create a valuable training experience. Participants will learn how to operate a forklift; how to read a caliper, micrometer and blueprint drawing; how to perform CPR; what companies do to improve and ensure safety, productivity and quality of their processes and products and improve their computer skills. MacGown work on display

The work of Joe MacGown of Starkville, researcher/scientific illustrator for the Mississippi Entomological Museum since 1988, will be on display in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts gallery at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus through Dec. 6. A reception for the artist is scheduled for 2 p.m., Dec. 6, in the gallery. In 1964, MacGown was born in Maine, where he lived until his family moved to Mississippi when he was 10. MacGown spent many of his young days in Maine collecting insects, exploring the woods and drawing everything he could see, including many images that no one ever sees. When he moved to Mississippi, his interest in art and nature continued. After graduating from high school, MacGown attended the Memphis College of Art. He also worked the night shift at a local grocery and did some freelance artwork on the side for the next few years. For the last 20 years, MacGown has continued to develop his own surrealistic drawing style, which he calls “Neogothic Surrealism” or “Subconscious Meandering.” He predominantly works in black ink, but he also does mixed media ...

CenterStage sets Nov. 16 concert

Itawamba Community College’s CenterStage will present its fall show at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 16, in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus. The show will consist of a variety of pop music, including Motown and the ‘80s as well as some solos and small ensemble pieces. ICC publishes report card

Itawamba Community College recently published its 2016 Report Card, which is made available by the College in compliance with House Bill No. 1071 approved during the 2010 Mississippi Legislative session. The bill created an Education Achievement Council which was established to set educational achievement goals for institutions of higher learning and community and junior colleges in the state and to assist in monitoring progress toward those goals.             The Community College Report Card, designed to reflect the unique mission of community colleges, includes metrics on enrollment; degrees awarded; student success, retention and progress; workforce training; high school equivalency and adult basic education services; and success in developmental or remedial coursework.             The results in the 2016 Report Card demonstrate achievement for Itawamba Community College. ICC ranked higher than the state total percentages, based on figures for 2015-16, in student success measures of graduation, retention and student progress earning credits rates. The College had similar percentages as the statewide system in the areas of successful completion of credits, licensure exam pass rates and graduation placement rates.
