ICC schedules ACT Prep sessions The Continuing Education Department of Itawamba Community College has scheduled several sessions for Preparing for the ACT. All meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.). Math and science sessions include Aug. 28, Oct. 16 and Dec. 4. English and reading are offered Oct. 2 and Nov. 20. ICC’s ACT prep instructors use intensive classroom review procedures in English, reading, science reasoning and math that focus on strategies for improving scores by three methods: review of all concepts tested, tips for overcoming test anxiety and guides for “’studying smart” that will help improve test-day performance. Instructors effectively communicate techniques to help students perform with confidence. Pre-test and post-test full-length ACT practice tests are administered to measure performance. Free COVID vaccine clinics set for all three ICC locations next week Free COVID-19 vaccine will be available at all Itawamba Community College locations next week for employees, students, their families and the entire community. Dates and times include Aug. 16 and 17 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the David C. Cole Student Services Building banquet room 1 at the Fulton Campus and the first floor conference room of the Academic and Student Center at the Tupelo Campus; and Aug. 18 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Belden Conference Center lobby. “As a community college, one of our core principles is open access, and helping to make vaccine available with the hope of slowing the spread of this virus allows us to continue to live our mission,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. ICC fall semester registration to continue through Aug. 20 Registration for the 2021 fall semester at Itawamba Community College will continue through Aug. 20. Students can register for classes Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the David C. Cole Student Services Building on the Fulton Campus and from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Academic and Student Center at the Tupelo Campus. Traditional full-term day and first eight-week classes begin Aug. 16; and eLearning full-term and first eight-week classes, Aug. 23. Financial aid may be available as well as adult learner scholarships. Academic, career education, eLearning (online) and workforce opportunities are available in an extensive schedule, which includes both day and evening classes at Fulton, Tupelo and Belden. ICC alumnus Jason Dickinson returns to become Campus Police Chief 28 years after he first enrolled as a student Itawamba Community College alumnus Jason Dickinson of Mantachie has returned to his alma mater to become Campus Police Chief 28 years after he first enrolled as a student. On July 1, Dickinson started his new job after spending 23 years working patrol and investigating. Dickinson said he applied because he wants to make a difference in the young lives of the students. Although he has never worked in the college environment, he wants to help or keep them on the right path and explain to them what a bad decision can bring. Dickinson earned two associate’s degrees from ICC, one in agribusiness and the other, in Law Enforcement Technology. “My first stint as a student was in 1993, and it was an adjustment straight out of a small high school. The best part was I met my wife of 25 years now in music appreciation class.” Dickinson’s second time as a student begin in 2015, when he enrolled to obtain a law enforcement degree. Electrician Assistant pathway set to begin at ICC-Belden, Sept. 14 Registration is underway for an Electrician Assistant pathway class that is scheduled to begin Sept. 14 at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.). The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-9 p.m. through Dec. 9. The program prepares individuals as electrician assistants to work closely with their supervising electrician to perform routine electrical work. It provides the foundational knowledge of basic math and safety rules; the use of hand, measuring and power tools; basic electricity and residential wiring. Students can also prepare for entry-level jobs in industry or private business. ICC updates operational plan for fall 2021 Itawamba Community College will welcome thousands of students, Aug. 16, with an updated operational plan. “For months, we have planned to resume ‘normal operations’ this fall, but there is significant concern regarding the current wave of the pandemic, which is especially affecting the younger segment of our population,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen in an email to the staff. “Many efforts were made over the summer to assist with the full transition; however, as I have continually stated since March 2020, the safety of our employees and students is of utmost importance.” Effective Aug. 9, the plan, which is level two of a four-level plan, will require face coverings in all buildings at all three ICC locations; physical distancing in full-capacity classes; enhanced cleaning protocols; continuation of hand sanitizing stations; continuation of the Safely together course for all employees and students; class testing and proctoring adjustments; plexiglass dividers between computer testing stations, labs and customer service areas and some limitations on capacity at indoor events and activities. “We believe that this mask mandate will be temporary, but ICC will continue to ... Registration continues for ICC's Gateway program Registration is continuing for the Gateway program at Itawamba Community College. The program is designed for individuals who are between the ages of 16-24, do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent, want career coaching and are serious about exploring employment opportunities. In addition, those who have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma may qualify if they have another type of barrier, including but not limited to, single parent, low income, disabilities and homeless. Enrollments are currently being accepted for participants in Chickasaw, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe and Pontotoc counties. Open enrollment for classes in the one-week program begins Mondays at 9 a.m. at the ICC Belden Center (3200 Adams Farm Rd.).
