Armstrong challenges 2018 graduates More than 600 graduates of Itawamba Community College crossed the stage at the Davis Event Center on the Fulton Campus May 12 during two commencement ceremonies and were rewarded with Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Science degrees or certificates of completion. They were among approximately 800 graduates who have earned degrees from ICC this year. Although each graduate’s journey is unique, there were commonalities. In fact, 56 graduates spent 11-20 years in pursuit of the degree, and five invested more than 25 years to reach this point. About 30 percent of the graduates are the first to earn a college degree in their family, and 55 shared the 2018 ceremony with a cousin, sibling, parent, aunt, uncle, son, daughter, spouse and a fiancé. During both ceremonies, ICC alumnus and Tupelo native Dr. Ketra Armstrong, who is a tenured professor in the school of Kinesiology in the Department of Sport Management of the University of Michigan, shared her life story as a challenge to the graduates. “This (ICC) is home,” she said. “Life takes you around the ... Jenna Hull accepted into Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship program Itawamba Community College sophomore Jenna Hull of Hamilton has been accepted into the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship program offers a scholarship to rural medical students in Mississippi who agree to practice in underserved rural areas of Mississippi for at least four years upon completion of their degree. The program offers up to $30,000 per year to cover the cost of tuition and a portion of the student’s instructional materials and living expenses. Hull is a biology major at ICC, where she will receive her associate’s degree next month. Her activities include Indian Delegation, LIN Report (producer), Phi Theta Kappa (vice president of scholarship), Science Club (president), Orientation Leader, tutor at the Student Success Center, Honors in Action committee and the Baptist Student Union. PTK International Awards Itawamba Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapters received several awards at the 100th International Convention, Apr. 19-21, in Kansas City, Mo. Those for the Upsilon Sigma chapter at the Fulton Campus include Distinguished College Project, Distinguished Chapter Award and Top 100 Chapter. The Beta Tau Sigma chapter at the Tupelo Campus received the REACH award, 5-Star Chapter, Distinguished Chapter Award and Top 100 Chapter.
